Oops, I originally meant to include a link.

Click on the "community" tab, then "My Community". On the left-hand side of the page, under the list of "Community Contact" message boards, click on "SparkPeople Challenges".

Theren are lots of threads there; you may need to page in one or two pages, but look for the "New member positive changes challenge" thread and click on that.

The URL for the thread, which will take you straight there, is:

http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/messageboard.asp?imboard=8&imparent=1312561

(The way that long URLs get chopped up by this message editor, you'll need to copy the above string into your browser a piece at a time.)

Please let me know if you have any further problem finding it. The thread is definitely worth a visit.

Cheers,

Bob

Stella, Margaret,

I've been with SparkPeople 58 days. I love the tools and articles, but even more, the people on this site are just great. The encouragement and support really help me to keep with the program.

Have you two checked out the "New member postitive changes challlenge"? I recommend it highly. I get a real charge out of reading it, and the moderator, Sara, a.k.a. "SCARON", is terrific.

Cheers,

Bob

Hi Stella: I have been loosing weight for the last two years. I started cutting down on my portion sizes Feb 2004 and walking at least once a week and lost 7 lbs by Mar 25th then I started aqua fit 3 times a week and to date have lost 26 lbs. 6 of them on sparkspeople. So SP is definately working for me. It has been a slow loss but in the long that is better because it stays off, but it is a life long habit. I would like to loose another 22 lbs. I am into a size 12 pants and this makes me ecstatic. It has been years since I fit into a size 12. Yippee!!!
I would be happy to be your buddy. I think that weight loss and eating properly can improve anyone's health and that is what it is all about BEING HEALTHY so good luck and lets keep encouraging one another. Margaret

Congratulations on your weight loss. Six pounds is a terrific start. How much do you want to lose? I am trying to lose 20 pounds. That won't make me skinny but will feel a lot better than I do now. I also like the Aquafit program but have been out of it for a while and need to get back. You certainly are welcome here on this board. I could use a buddy. I'm older than you but we could still be buddies.

In fact, as someone said recently we are ALL buddies here. Welcome!!

Hi I'm 59 also and have been trying to find a buddy my own age. Can I join your over 50 club. I have been seriously trying to loose weight for the last two years and joined SP to hopefully loose it quicker. It has been working so far as I have lost 6 lbs. The exercise that works best for me is aquafit and today I tried deep water acqafit and liked it so much I will add it to my weekly. exercise.

OK Oki, here is the best I got...

THE LAWS OF GOLF

1. If you really want to get better at golf, go back and take it up at a much earlier age.

2. The game of golf is 90% mental and 10% mental.

3. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three.

4. When you look up, causing an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again.

5. Any change works for a maximum of three holes - - or at a minimum of not at all.

6. No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse.

7. Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing.

8. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls.

9. If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up, or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there.

10. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing.

11. The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical unconscious motion that allowed you to compensate for all of your many other errors.

12. If it ain't broke, try changing your grip.

13. Golfers who claim they don't cheat, also lie.

14. Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot.

15. A golf match is a test of your skill against your opponent's luck.

16. It's surprisingly easy to hole a 50-foot putt when you lie 8.

17. Counting on your opponent to inform you when he breaks a rule is like expecting him to make fun of his own haircut.

18. Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.

19. It's not a gimme if you're still away.

20. The shortest distance between any two points on a golf course is a straight line that passes directly through the center of a very large tree.

21. There are two kinds of bounces: unfair bounces, and bounces just the way you meant to play it.

22. You can hit a 2-acre fairway 10% of the time, and a 2-inch branch 90% of the time.

23. Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe.

24. If you want to hit a 7-iron as far as Tiger Woods does, simply try to lay up just short of a water hazard.

25. To calculate the speed of a player's downswing, multiply the speed of his backswing by his handicap. Example: backswing 20 mph, handicap 15, downswing 600mph.

26. There are two things you can learn by stopping your backswing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have, and which one is wearing the glove.

27. Hazards attract; fairways repel..

28. You can put "draw" on the ball, you can put "fade" on the ball, but no golfer can put "straight" on the ball.

29. A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours.

30. If there is a ball in the fringe and a ball in the bunker, your ball is in the bunker.

31. If both balls are in the bunker, yours is in the footprint.

32. Don't buy a putter until you've had a chance to throw it.

Exercise was a big NO to me for so long. I was sure it would be boring and would not hold my interest. Oh, I would exercise, but it would have to be in a competitive environment. As you age and become athleticly challenged, the games of racquet ball, hand ball, volleyball, etc. become harder and harder to enjoy in a goup setting. (Too embarrasing to be the one who lost the point for the team) Golf is the only exercise I maintained with any regularity - until my hip gave out on me. Sooo... I got a new hip and then HAD to exercise to regain any type of recovery in my leg and hip. Well, believe it or not, I started to enjoy exercise - the little, simple physical therapy routines that took about 10 minutes to complete. The routines were over before you knew it. But... the doctor said to do them three times a day. So I did. But you know, those ten minute exercise periods went so fast that it was nothing to do three a day. Well, that is how I started - just like the spark plan says, with little, tiny steps. I was also seeing results - big time! That kept me motivated to maintain the regime. As my leg and hip grew stronger, the physical therapists gave me a little more to do each week. More positive results, more routines, and so on. I am now 11 weeks into my recovery and can't wait to do my regular, grown up strength exercises for my whole body. I do 4 days of 40 minute sessions per week, around my 10 miles of walking per week. If you had told me three months ago that I would be doing what I am doing, much less enjoying ever minute of it, I would have never believed you! Life is an amazing journey!!

I know what you mean about exercise. I really don't hate it, but hate to START it. I do love to walk, but only when it is over 45 out. Sooooooooon!!!

I have a big sweet tooth too. Anything chocolate. Gives me energy(for a while). I just can't get used to being a 'senior', the energy level goes down. I used to have the energy of two people.

I think the hardest thing for me is the water. I am a coffee feind ( half decaf). Once again looking for energy, I guess.

Good Luck to us, we can do it together!!!

Hi Willows; sounds like you are on the right track by giving up the sweets ,that was the hardest for me as i have a really big sweet tooth ,but i find it is easlier if i am drinking lots of water as i don't seem to crave them so much ,sounds silly but works for me.My big thing is pushing myself to exercise ,i know i'm in a rut because i used to love it. We can all be buddies here. I officially start tomorrow keeping track of things. I will have to stop visiting a few other websites, to have the time. I am retired. I recently lost some weight on WW, but it is a very tedious, slow, process. I tend to give up if I don't see results. A freind and I are giving up cookies, candy, cake, ect for Lent, so it is a good time to start again...

See you all tomorrow.

DID THE CIRCURT AND SOME UPPER BODY WEIGHTS. IT WAS COLD HERE THIS WEEK END BUT WE DIDN'T GET ANY SNOW. I DIDN'T DO REAL GOOD THIS WEEK END EITHER DID FAIR TODAY. Hi Cathy , i know you are at work ,just wanted to know how you did over the week end . My daughter was home for a few days and we ate out a few times so i haven't kept track this week end ,but i did get weighed on Sun.and was down a lb,so guess the weekend eating hasn't shown up yet.
I have been retired for 4 years but when i worked i alway found it hard to get to the gym,not because i didn't have time but because once i got home i didn't want to bother to go back out ,even now i'm not working i would sooner do workouts by myself from the exercise tapes and as we live on a quiet country road i can walk for an hour and hardly meet a car, good old Nova scotia except today as it is snowing and blowing really hard here .
this is my 6 th week here and i love it let me know how you are making out , take care June

SparkPeople doesn't really prohibit very many goodies. The main exceptions are tobacco and non-diet soft drinks, which are pretty much beyond the pale.

For yummy things like cheesecake, chocolate, and wine, we just have to be really cautious about not over-doing it. Tracking what you eat at SparkPeople is a good way to manage that.

Cheers,

Bob
