Alright Debbie and Hubby! That's great. My husband is trying to get on the bandwagon, but he is having difficulty with portions. He is so used to eating a lot that when I tell him what a portion is - he is not happy. He will get there.
I have a short story to share. A week ago I was invited to someones house for a small health seminar. During the seminar, the lady brought out a Cheeseburger Happy Meal from McDonalds. She started by telling us it was purchased in August of 2004. The packaging for the burger had started to deteriorate, but the cheese, burger, and bun was petrified, but showed no signs of mold or deterioration. The fries were the same. Made me think a little. I think I will go out and buy one to see if I get the same results.

Hi ya'll, My hubby and I are sticking with our new way of eating, but aren't doing so well on the walking. We began on Jan. 3, and since then I have dropped 8 pounds and Hubby has dropped 10 pounds. We know weight loss at this speed will slow down shortly but we wanted to see some progress quickly to help keep us motivated. I'm proud of Hubby. He was forced to eat out at lunch yesterday and he stuck with the program; McD salad with grilled chicken and water to drink. He said he was sorely tempted to say #$%*# and get a hamburger meal. Well good luck to everybody. I hope everyone has a good and successful weekend. -Debbie

Hi everyone, Thanks for the welcome, Debbie. That puppy pic on your posts is just adorable. My little dog is where I got my username. She's a tiny poodle. My pic is of my 1 year old nephew. He's so sweet!
I'm still exploring the site. It has a lot of great things. I've planned my meals for the week and I have my shopping list. I'm working on my water and added more fruits and veggies this week. One step at a time. I want this beginning to be the way I will live the rest of my life. I don't want to have another "program" for a short time and then gain back.
Good luck to all! Congrats to those who are losing. Hang in there for those of us who are just beginning or are at a standstill.
Let's do it! Margie

I love the calorie counter in the nutrition section. I was eating almost 1700 calories yesterday! A handful of pretzels here, a piece of cheese there. Today I ate 1195 calories. I think I am going to meet my goal:)
I had a very fast metabolism all my life, and memopause it catching up with me.
I also exercise 30 minutes every morning, but am going to try and wake up 15 minutes earlier so I can get 45 minutes.

My Goodness!!!
I checked my post here the first few days after I entered it and nobody had replied, so I gave up on this thread! Just thought I'd check it again today to see if ANYBODY at all had replied.
Holy smokes! HI everybody!! It took me awhile to read all your posts, and thanks so much for all the support, encouragement, and sharing!
Sounds like we're all in this together, and generally all with the same concerns and goals.
I've been posting daily in a few other threads and will now watch this one too under "see my posts" . it took me a week and someone else to point out to me that this is an easy way to track places I'm posting to.
Hope everyone is having a great second week of a whole New Year!

Hello Everyone!
It sounds like everyone is off to a great start for the New Year!. I gained about 4 pounds over the holidays and plan to have it off soon. I exercised for the first time last week and felt like I was dying the next day. I need to get back to more fruit and vegetables and less carbs. I too just turned 53 in December. I am a little taller that the rest of you at 5'6" but I tend to gain all of my weight I the middle. I have 15 more pounds to go and have been at it for almost a year now. Exercise is the hardest thing for me. It seems once I get motivated I can stick to it, but if I get de-railed, I have a hard time getting back on!
Good luck
MissPam

Hi skkirts, Feeling like a food addict, I wanted to wipe the slate clean. I visually wiped the table off of every food. My hubby and I are retraining ourselves on how to eat, so we are re-introducing foods at a slow rate. The first 2 weeks we are eating veggies and proteins...a lot of fish and chicken meals and much less beef. So, basically we are following south beach for the first 2 weeks. Starting week 3 is when we make our own changes by adding: #3 - 1 fruit daily #4 - 1 c. sk. milk daily #5 - 2 fruits daily #6 - 1 starch daily
Well, that's our plan for our new eating program. We have been eating Wonderful meals and I have already dropped 8 pounds since 1-2-2006. I have searched thru all my diet cook books and found many recipes that we are now willing to try since we have eliminated all the frozen dinners we used to eat. It was my hubby's idea to go strict at first so we could see some fast results. I have tried atkins many times and get sick when I eat only proteins. That's how I decided to go in this direction.
Good luck to you on your weight loss efforts. This is the best time in our lives to make changes. -Debbie

Did you start the south beach Diet with Phase I or did you jump right to Phase II?

"It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not. " James Gordon, M.D.
This is a quote that I have in my inspirational folder on my computer. That's kinda how I'm feeling. I haven't really been ready to make the necessary changes til now. If we just keep putting one foot in front of the other, we will reach our goals. -Debbie

I am 51. I have been an avid exerciser, but now with menopause upon me the lbs are creeping up. The nutrition page showed me that I have too many calories, even with all the exercise.
I would love to be a buddy to you.

Hi to Gwyn & Margie, Sure sounds like we're in the same kind of boat. I am feeling really inspired to get this extra weight off this time. My husband is as gung-ho as I am. He gained 30 lbs. in less than 1 year. We both barely weighed over 110 when we got married 35 years ago, and we both have gained over 100 pounds since we got married. Unbelievable. . I weighed 125 in 1990. That was the year a stressful life event happened, and that's when the weight started packing on. With all the stress I was under, I wanted to eat, and keeping my weight under control didn't seem very important or even possible. I'm working hard to make this lifestyle work for me this time. I have reached that stage in my life when I'm having lower back aches and sometimes my knees hurt when walking up and down stairs. I'm too young for that. I'm ready to become healthier. My mother is 81 years of age and in much better health than any of her 10 kids. She's a size 8 and never had such a weight problem as mine. I sure have rambled on. I wish good luck to you and I pray that we can all get healthier this year. -Debbie

Hi, I'm Margie, I just turned 53 and I'm over 100 lbs. overweight. I became hyperthyroid last year and lost 54 lbs. Unfortunately, my doctor said it wasn't good to lose it that way. He recommended having my thyroid killed with radiation. I'm now hypothyroid and sluggish. I also gained the weight back plus more. I have to make the effort to regain my energy and get the weight down. I just can't keep on this way. It's not too late for us to have many years of active life. This looks like a wonderful place to start. I'm thankful that I found it. Hopefully, I can make some changes and keep motivated.

Hi Miss_Benny, I'm 53 and need to remove app. 90 pounds from my 5'4" frame. Your post sounds so positive and friendly, I felt ready to finally respond to someone. :) My 50 yr. old sister is a nurse and she's like me, needs to lose bunches of weight. I know how the excess pounds can sneak up on ya before you know it. I've been married 35 years and weighed 110 pounds at the time I got married. Now I weigh 219 and want to get down to 135 pounds. My husband and I have started on the south beach diet and are working on retraining our eating habits. Since Jan. 3 I have lost 7 pounds. The wonderful part is that I have not been feeling any extreme hunger at any time. You have been successful in the past ridding yourself of excess pounds and I believe you will do it this time. Good luck. -Debbie

| I know it's hard to exercise when you've had an injury, but being a rehab nurse you know what to do and what not to do. The ladies in my department usually have Breakfast Thursday and Lunch Friday every week. Everybody brings in a breakfast dish for Thursday to eat breakfast together and then order lunch in on Friday to eat together. I've been bringing my lunch all week and plan to bring it on Friday (something I've already calculated the calorie content of). Wish me luck, that I can continue to eat according to my meal plan and resist these temptations to eat high calorie and sweet foods throughout the day.

HI, I'm a nurse too. And you're right about our eating habits. It's hard to eat healthy when you are surounds with junk food all day. And the cafateria at work doesn't off that many healthy choices either. The salad bar is great, but they don't offer any diet dressing!
I slipped on the ice in the parking lot on my way in to work about 4 years ago and it resulted in a bulging disc in L2/L3. I did the therapy thing (i'm a rehab nurse) and it did help some what. But it still kickes up occasionally, making it difficult to do some things. But exercise actually helps.
If you want to buddy up let me know. We could surely understand where the other is coming from

I'm a Social Services Counselor at a hospital, a job I started 6 months ago. The ladies in our department have some terrible eating habits and I got caught up in it and have gained at least 15 pounds since I started working here. I have worked another weight loss program that used journaling and accountability as tools to stay focused on eating right. It always helped to talk to someone honestly about what I had eaten rather than hide it. Part of the reason I joined this group was so that I could log on and post anything I want about my eating on a given day, without feeling ashamed.

Hi everyone,
I'm 52, a career nurse, and loooking for people to share support with.
Looking madly to find a message board that "fits" for me.
This just may be it.
I need to lose 30 lbs, but have set my goal for 20. Will check at that time to see how many wrinkles I have on my face and go from there.
I haven't had a weight problem in over 25 years. In my 20's I was very overweight and tried every diet known to man. I finally got the weight off by age 31 and managed to keep it off by regular exercise until this past year.
In early 2005, I fractured my L5 vertebrae at work and that put the kibosh on rigourous activity for 6 months ... and the unwanted lbs revisited me.
It took me til Dec to get motivated again, and just as I was about to begin, I slipped on the ice outside my home and fractured my left wrist in 2 places. They gave me a cast that allows me to type, but rigorous exercise is out again for 6 more weeks. Just call me "grace".
I'm looking to give and get support over these next 6 to 8 weeks at home.
30 lbs on a 5'3" small-boned frame is like 70 lbs to anyone else .. it's a true burden and I need to get it under wraps before it gets control of me even more.
I also need to get better eating habits (nurses are famous for having the worst eating habits of all people) This is the area I could use the most help in ... maybe an accountability team that asks each day if I had breakfast ... something like that.
I think this site is wonderful and am looking for people who are doing this while maintaining a sense of humor about it.
I love to laugh and I know laughing instead of feeling sorry for myself will be more beneficial to me than anything.
