I'VE HAD A FULL KNEE REPLACEMENT FOR THE LEFT KNEE, AND HAD 2 SCOPES ON THE RIGHT, AND THE RIGHT KNEE WILL EVENTUALLY BE REPLACED. IF YOUR DOCTOR TOLD YOU THAT SURGERY WAS NECESSARY, THEN IT WILL PROBABLY CONTINUE TO WORSEN IF IT'S LEFT UNATTENDED TO.

I DON'T KNOW THE EXTENT OF YOUR KNEE INJURIES, BUT I NEVER REGRETTED HAVING THE SURGERY ON MINE.

Yes I have seen the doc. he told me that I needed surgery on my knee, but I told him no because I have only one knee and if something goes wrong. My knee will be missed up for the rest of my life and I really don't want that. I hope you can understand:)

It sounds like you need to ice it and REST!! It does take time for sprains and breaks to heal. Exercise is not always the best medicine. Sometimes ice and heat and rest are needed. Have you seen a doctor? I am sending you healing energy!

Start out slow even with pool exercises. Start out just walking back and forth in the pool.

and making exercise into fun and pleasure is what keeps us wanting (or at least willing) to do more of it!

Three times a week is a perfect schedule for it, too! Good for you!!

Hello everyone. Swimming and water exercises are definately the answer to getting exercise when you have limitations. I too have physical limitations. I have access to a pool but until recently was too embarrassed to be seen in a swimming suit. Then I saw a video of a young man who weighed 600+ pounds on Oprah show who went swimming everyday with other people and also did some strengthening exercises at the same place. And I realized that I was just using my size as an excuse not to try....so 2 weeks ago I swallowed my pride and got started. I am gradually building up my endurance and do my own water aerobics. It's amazing how much better you feel. I am still embarrassed when the thinner people get in the pool, but I am using that as motivation. So I encourage you to jump in and enjoy the challenge!

BTW, I just read an article this morning in the Consumer Reports "On Health" newsletter that states: "You burn more calories in the water than from similar exercies done on dry land.". ...just backing up the statement that it is an excellent form of all-around exercise.

also remember that the no pain-no gain concept came from men!

Pain is your body's way of telling you something--and women listen!

Swimming and/or an exercise class in the pool is great. You can usually find a class, especially in the summer at your local parks and recreation department. Also the local YMCA usually has a pool. I get a pass for 30 times and it's more economical. Good Luck!

THANKS FOR THE INFO, I GUESS FOR THE PRESENT TIME I WILL HAVE TO TAKE OUT A MEMBERSHIP TO A POOL. I NEED TO GET SOME EXERCISE, AND WHEN I DO THE BIKE ETC IT BOTHERS MY BACK TOO MUCH. "NO PAIN NO GAIN" I DON'T THINK THAT EXPRESSION WAS MEANT FOR PEOPLE LIKE US WITH SO MUCH GOING AGAINST US RIGHT FROM THE START.
I APPRECIATE THE INPUT, AND IF ANYONE ELSE HAS ANY IDEAS, PLEASE POST AND LET ME KNOW. YOUR SPARK FRIEND..ELAINE

In the past year I have been suffering with a herniated disc. I also have osteoarthritis. When I was in the most pain from my back I did water exercises in deep water. I made up my own routine so my back would remain straight with no twisting. I could keep exercising arms and legs without stress on my back. At my YMCA there are trainers that work with people in the water.
Now I have worked with a trainer that has given me back strengthening exercises and other weight bearing exercises in the gym. I'm doing well and feeling stronger.
Hope you can find something that works for you. I'd try water exercising. In deep water you can wear a flotation belt so you don't even have to know how to swim. Give it a try!

OMG, AMELDA1! I would say you're proof that things could be worse and feel ashamed at my frustrations over my own predicament. I had an accident last October which resulted in a broken elbow and torn (as in complete separation) tricep tendon. Here it is 8 montsh post-surgery and I find out the original surgeon either didn't do the entire repair or I have a new tear. Since the docs all agree "this is a rare injury", I believe the latter but no doc will concur, at least not yet. I mean what are the odds of having a rare injury and then repeating it less than 6 months later?

Anyway, my exercise limitations are just don't do anything with the left arm. Which is a far cry from your restrictions.

I think the pool advice is really good--it is one of the most all-around beneficial exercise tools there is. And the best part of pool exercising is that you feel all refreshed immediately after finishing--cool, huh?

I wish you all the best with your exercises and am mucho curious to see what other recommendations you get so will continue to monitor here.
