I'm hoping that the other people watching it see it for what it is, a healthy alternative to those fad diets. And I second the "ugh"....seriously....tapeworm diet? Ew.
Keep it up you two!!

Well, I hated that SP was lumped in w/ "fad" diets, but I also sort of wish they had spent more time on it since this is the real deal. I was thorougly nauseated by the tapeworm segment...

I just wanted to thank all of you again for the support and encouragement that I've gotten since the airing of the show.
Update: Tina and I are working hard to make it to our goal of Team 150. We both got a little derailed during the holidays, but we are going strong these last couple of weeks. I look forward to updating you on our progress. Our goal is to be applying for The Amazing Race this fall. (One year from taping for the E! Show.)

| When I saw the E! THS it just showed all the crazy stuff that people would do just to get that perfect body. Nothing really healthy and truly focused on the superficiality of losing weight. Especially the story about the lil girl. Even if she would reach her ideal weight, I don't think in life she would be fulfill because she doesn't believe in herself. She said that diet and exercising didn't work for her. I just thought "What is she from outta space?". This is the way that our body naturally is suppose to be, and we had to reprogram it again to nature. I truly can't live without exercise, I know that sometimes is really hard to make myself get outta bed but once I past those first 10min working out, it's like I just can't stop and how I feel afterwards there's no comparison. I remember that in new year's eve I was feeling a bit depressed and I said to myself "I can either cry about it or I can sweat it off". I totally forgot even why I was sad in the beginning. At the end of the program I saw the SP bit and was so inspired to join it. I was never moved to sign up to myspace or any other ones like those. But this one I truly can dig because there's so much support and inspirational stories. Plus I can keep track of my nutrition and it's for free. I thank SP because it's helping so many dedicated people in reaching their goals. I truly wouldn't look back since I've learned this new path.

I feel so bad I didn't see this thread earlier, and in fact only found it thanks to Denise who pointed it out to me when I asked if anyone knew about the show or the two women shown on it.
I loved the E diet fads show and ESPECIALLY loved the Spark people mention and seeing the two women on it.
Hats off to you ladies for giving the world such a great glimpse of this wonderful place and all that it means to those of us here.

Welcome to all you new folks! Kybaby, make sure you're not eating too much or too late at night. Both of those things will affect your morning hunger. The shakes are certainly a better option than nothing at all, but make sure you're getting enough fiber to carry you through to your next meal. For me, I'd rather eat my calories with fiber filled food, than drink them. Hope all of you experience the success you're looking for!

Wow HAD_ENUFF! Thanks for the encouragement...I just bought Slim Fast Optima a couple of weeks ago to use for just that purpose OR when I need to eat something on the run. For a couple of months now I have been keeping Dannon Light and Fit Smoothies (and Yogurt) on hand to try to Break the Fast. Not losing much weight but my main goal is to get healthy and if I can lose the weight too that would be GREAT!!! Congrats on your weight loss~hope I can do it too

I watched the show because I wanted to see SP projected in a positive light. I was soooo proud of all of us after seeing the show! My husband watched it with me and then replied that he understood a little better now why I was on the computer so much in the evening. Check out the "People" and "Woman's World" articles too, they are great! Good Luck to everyone in meeting your goals. Fondly,

KYBABE12 -- I'm not a breakfast person either! Never have been and probably never will be. But, when I started on this "Healthy Lifestyle", I *knew* that breakfast was VERY important.
The Metabolism goes to sleep when we retire at night, and doesn't wake up until we have our first meal the next day.
I had to find something that my body could handle in the morning!
My sister suggested a Slim Fast Optima shake to start the day. Phew! I *can* handle that! It has all the nutrients my body needs to jump-start my metabolism... I make mine with soy milk.
I like breakfast foods... but I have them for supper or lunch, occasionally. (the healthy versions, of course.)
I hope this helps.

| I only caught the end of the show both times I saw it and to my dismay both times it was talking about Sparkpeople.com. I would have never known about this site if I did not catch the show. This is the first week for me and there is alot of wonderful/helpful information as well as the support needed for all of us to be successful. I have tried to do this on my own over and over again but always have failed.

|
I am brand new; this is my first week with SparkPeople. I am so grateful that I watched the E! show about Fad Diets. It is not a station that I watch on a regular basis but found it just channel surfing. I would never have known anything about this site had I not watched that show!
For me, keeping a food journal has been the only way I have ever had any weight loss and even at that it was always minimal. If I did nothing else but enter my food daily (which is not what I do)I would be ecstatic with the site. It takes all the work, effort and drudgery out of a needed chore. More than that, it has been an eye-opener for me. I am an "under-eater". People have told me that ALL my life and have really good self-control. Too good is the problem. I am stuck at my weight for the last 40 years with little change no matter what I have done. I hate breakfast, don't get hungry if I don't eat and therefore my body is probably in starvation mode all the time; hanging onto every fat cell I've accumulated because it doesn't know when I will eat again. This is an adventure, albeit a scary one. Changing habits is difficult. Now, eating several small meals a day, I am hungry all the time...but I've lost 5 lbs!!! Praise the Lord!

| What an amazing inspirtation to those of us just beginning our journey to fitness. I have so many thing wrong with me that I truly am scared of failing again. I fell last night and it has brought out even more reasons for me to do this. I will not be starting just yet, but I am learning and reading exactly what I will be doing. I am so impressed with SP and like others that have written, I wish I had heard of it sooner. Thanks. Scared2

Wow! I'm really glad I came and joined this discussion. I'm so happy to see so many new folks joined after watching the show. I was really disappointed in the program because I was afraid most people would ignore the caveats presented at the end of each segment by the experts and see only the people who had the suppossed success with these extreme and dangerous diets. I was also, more than a little upset that they put the SP segment at the very end and really didn't spend a lot of time on it. I felt the two women they featured were great, but it would have been nice to follow them up with some of the many people who have been on the program, reached and maintained their weight loss.
SP is the most sensible and healthy plan out there and it's free! If you can't maintain a program for the rest of your life, than it's not a good program, that's what sets SP apart, as far as I'm concerned.
Good luck to all of you who joined after watching E!

I watched the program and was a bit dismayed that there was not much emphasis on the exercise part. Making better food choices is key, but you have to work out too.
As for the fad diets and pills - it makes me sad to see so many people wasting their time and hard earned money on that crap.
And how bout that 21-day diet, where they go to a clinic and drink a bunch of stuff? What do those people think will happen after they start eating real food again?

I joined Sparkpeople almost a year ago and i am so glad I did. It isnt about dieting, it is about lifestyle changing. Exercising more, being accountable for what and how much you eat and tracking it, knowing that you dont have to give anything up but watching portions is totally awesome. I havent lost much as I veered off track but I am back and ready to go. I am glad that Sparkpeople got some publicity.
It has worked for so many people already and will continue to work for many more.

Welcome to all of the new members! I'm sure you'll be glad you chose SparkPeople over the tapeworm! Eeewww! I can't believe anyone would try that!
Kudos to Tina & Kristina for representing Spark so well & to SparkGuy for starting this wonderful site in the first place! I haven't been watching many reality shows lately, but if you 2 girls ever get on The Amazing Race, please let me know because I'll want to watch!
I totally agree about the comments on the 14-yr-old girl: spoiled, in need of counseling, & not trying hard enough to control her eating or with exercising. To boost a sluggish metabolism, you need to put more activity in your life.
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned anything about the naturalists with the baby that starved to death. How could they NOT know he was starving? And I have to wonder that if they felt "natural" was the way to go, why wasn't the baby getting his nourishment from breast milk? Did I miss something?
Anyway, I've never had more than about 10 lbs to lose most of my life. Then I quit smoking (almost 12 years ago now!) & gained 50 lbs. I had lost 35 lbs, about 3 years ago, but gained most of it back after my Mom moved in with us for a winter. I was trying to get HER to gain weight, but it only worked for me! I got motivated & started to lose again, then found out I had breast cancer. Even though I had about the shortest treatment possible (lumpectomy, 5 days of irradiation, no chemo, no hormone treatments), it took a long time to feel "normal" again. I had quit my part-time job while going through the treatment & finally found work last April (a year after my surgery). That was my focus at that time. I don't like the job & am trying to work out a solution with that, but in the meantime I realize I need to get back to taking care of myself.
So I'm considering 2008 the year I will not procrastinate! My DH is on board with me, too. We're both trying to eat better, exercise, lose weight, finish unfinished projects, & otherwise take care of areas where we've procrastinated. We're going strong so far, & we're both pleased with our progress.
I hope everyone has a great new year & remember that resolutions don't have to start (or re-start) on Jan 1st -- the best time to begin anything is NOW! Good luck!
And may the Spark be with you!
|
|
|
|
Welcome to all the newcomers here who were prompted by the show on E! to join! We're going for 1 billion fitness minutes in 2008 (see Sparkguy's 10-min. fitness team)& need you to make that goal, so put those feet to work & log those minutes in the Fitness Tracker or the "quick track!"
I've been aware of a number of fad diets out there, but I couldn't believe some of the things they covered on the show. Terrible how the industry takes advantage of people who are so desperate.
I'm glad SparkPeople got some publicity, and was shown in such dramatic contrast to all the stupid things out there. I wish it had gotten more time though, and kind of wondered how many people may have missed that part after watching for a while & then switching to a different station.

Carrieb- Your post COULD have been MY post. I Was told about Spark a few months ago froma former WW friend, (were both former WWs) And I never went to SP or anything--DO read the emails but thats about it--after watching the show (bc I'll watch and read ANYTHING that pertains to diets--just need to incorporate) I thought OMG I obviouslt havent looked around spark & set my stuff up right! NAD actually incouraged me to do so. IMO SP was the ONLY safe REAL way to go. EVen WW and Jenny Craig were portrayed a lil negatively with people gaining after they reach goal and are no longer on program. Way to go SPARK!!

I recorded the show, and finally got to see it last night.
Honestly, I think the one of the ONLY positive parts of the show was the SparkPeople portion! I'm THRILLED to see it has inspired so many people to join! Welcome!!!!
I thought the program was really... fluffy... on the other diets, though, not focusing enough on the NEGATIVE aspects, or rather, REALITY. ;) They just kind of brushed over it. "THS" didn't really do much "investigating," if you ask me! Half of it felt like a commercial for some pretty extreme diets, instead of what it should been -- more evidence that lifestyle change is the key to long term success. Tapeworms?!?!?! *facepalm*
I, too, really wanted to reach out and help that young girl... she needs to meet up with the kids in that after school program! On the other hand, I couldn't believe that her parents would take her to Mexico to get surgery that American doctors wouldn't perform on someone so young. That's shameful, in my opinion. She needs SparkTeens!
I'm glad I watched it, even though some parts had me arguing with my TV, making comments, agreeing and disagreeing, etc. My husband came home and watched the second part with me, and HE started making comments, too! LOL!

It was a great segment on sparkpeople. I joined a few months ago but never touched it. I'm happy to say for the last 2 days I've been using this great site! As far as the 14 year old girl did they ever bother to do a health check on her like by and Endocrinologist?? The way her stomach looked before she lost the weight looked almost like pcos or cushings. As for the tape worm CRAZY!!

| it has been a while since I was on, glad to see such a positive healthy weight loss sight being explored instead of all the crazy one that are out there. After a year I am still at my lowest weight and I am back to try to lose another 10 before my 20 year highschool reunion.

I went to the GYM to watch it on cable and rode the exercise bike for 45 minutes. I was so mad at the woman who had used the Metabolife and had the heart attack, who had been too stupid to tell her doctor she was taking it, then she had the guts to sue the company. It was as pathetic as the woman who died from the gastric by-pass surgery and the husband sued the staple company. WHY DON'T THESE PEOPLE REALIZE IT IS ABOUT DIET AND EXERCISE!! We have so many SPARKERS who have lost huge amounts from proper diet and exercise, that they are proof that it can be done and done right.
|
|
|
|
| I am 52 years old and I thankfully have not had a hear attack but every female in my family has had one in their early fifties, so i know where I am headed if I do not lose weight and exercise. I hope you recover from your heart attack and achieve your goals.

I just saw the show. It was one day late here in Guam. I couldn't believe some of the other extreme methods though, especially the tapeworm. A co-worker once told me I should try tapewarms when I was trying everything and I couldn't lose weight, but he was just kidding, I didn't know people actually ingested tapeworms...
I'm really glad they mentioned that support is a big part of Sparkpeople.
Hello new members, the support here is incredible!

I saw the E! show also. I have never heard of SparkPeople either. I called my mom to tell her about she said she has known about it for a long time. Some how it just slipped her mind to tell me! Oh well this should be a great new beginning. Can't wait for my success story to begin. Love the cool tools on the website. This is so awesome and thanks for letting it be free.

The very first thing I want to do is extend a warm welcome to all the new members who have come to the site as a result of seeing our two members on the E! Fad Diets documentary.
This is the very first step for the best thing you could do for yourself for the rest of your life!
I know, it's cliche, but it's true!
We all know in our heart of hearts that fad diets and magic pills and even more magic "surgery" will not reverse the weight gain spiral that we find ourselves in. As I have said many times, "I have dieted my way into obesity."
Now I am at a place with people who have the same inner aches, pains, and hopes and dreams as I do, and that is, to do what it takes to change my life to become fit and healthy again!
SparkPeople.com fell into my lap this past November. I'm already 20 pounds ahead of the game, and expect to be here for the long haul.
We will help each other; and we will share each others' successes.
Welcome aboard and full speed ahead!

I caught the end and I agree the tape worm thing was NASTY. Ugg. I am glad I switched over though because I have been searching for something like this for a long time. I was about to go to bed and wake up once again unmotivated and now I feel ready to get started!

I saw the show. It reminded me of how many diets I have tried. But I liked the way this plan sounded. i am going to five it a real try. The tape worm was a turn off

I agree with MICHEW82. I saw the show on E!, and thought they did a great job on how people are different with diet programs. Did you guys see that tape worm thing...that was horrible. What kind of person would be that infatuated with weight loss? gross!
I joined the website today because i saw it on E! I totally love this website, and it's already aided me in my weight loss plan.

| It was great to see Sparkpeople highlighted on the E! show. It was almost difficult for me to watch the other portions of the show, because there were so many extreme issues that were discussed. Having tried pills and crash diets, it was a bit overwhelming to see the negative outcomes displayed right there infront of me. Im glad that Tina and Kristina stepped up and showed the healthy aspects of Sparkpeople in a positive light! Thanks!

| I saw the show and I'm so glad I did because that is how I learned about this wonderful website! I'm so excited to be a new member. I think E! did a great job of giving the ups and downs of all weight loss programs in general and happy I caught the program!

I seen the e tv show. I am so excited about this site. I started relearning how to eat on Nov. 18 of this past year. I have already started to feel changes happen. Have now moved down from a size 16 in a 14 and heading into a 12. Today when I got dressed, I started to ask my husband a question stopped, laughed and said I have not ask this question in over 20years. but do these clothes look big on me. Once at the party I must say it felt very good to know my cloths looked a little big

| It was a great show and I think Kristina and Tina did a wonderful job of explaining the benefits of this website! They were very motivating! I've only been a member for a few months, but I'm seeing more and more benefits everyday. And like SUNNY071, I'm a WW member as well and we're starting an 'at work' session tomorrow. I think that the two programs compliment each other well because they encourage balance and lifestyle change as the keys to losing weight and living healthy but if you can't afford WW, SP is the way to go!!! Thank you Spark People for letting us know that the show would be on (I would have missed it otherwise!)
