I bought a internet compatable phone and limited servie plan through AT&T for use with Spark. I can access the webpage right on my PDA/phone and enter my info as i go throughtout the day without being near a computer. The best thing is the service is great and the plan is priced according to my needs. I keep up with my Spark page as i go. I love it.

(bump)

I was doing a search to see if there was anyway to import food data into SparkPeople - I track food on another program, but I would like to import it to SparkPeople for some of the SparkPeople reports (and points).

Anyway to manage just a plain import function?

Not everyone with a PDA uses it as a tool for the internet. There are other programs (WW, Calorie King) that have software that runs on your PDA that you can then synch to your PC and the website. Personally, I don't use my phone or my PDA to access the internet. I'm in front of a computer long enough during the day.

Given Sparkpeople's core strength, the only real benefit to using it on your PDA would be to have instant updating. This would require a data plan. However, right now, if you purchase the Opera Mobile browser for your PDA, you can go to Sparkpeople.com just like on a PC.

If Sparkpeople can update the sparkpeople.com/mobile interface to include basic food and exercise additions, everyone with a mobile phone with internet could use it. I am curious as to if anyone actually uses the function to take a picture with your phone and upload it. I can't imagine this being useful.

ditto on the comments.... SparkGuy, can we get portable spark for pda tracking? It would be awsome!

I actually posted another message suggesting that even if SparkPeople couldn't do a full application like WWCalc, having a way to upload a .txt file from a PDA (or computer) to Spark would help in updating your foods eaten for the day.

I use WWCalc which is freeware I found when on www.dwlz.com It's a great program and allows me to export my journal in .txt format.

It would be nice if you could add food to account, rather than just look it up. (Although I am glad I can at least look it up.)

I am unable to log in from PDA even though I can see the regular (non-PDA) version of the Spark web site. I use a PDA with the Palm OS.

Even after I stopped attending WW meetings I kept the online option for a long time because their site has a great program for Palms. I have a Palm Tx and really do miss the option of doing all my tracking on it. I hope SP realize that Palms are the way of life for many people. We really want a program.

I just found this thread because I was hoping for a PDA version of spark. I am not allowed to use my internet at work for personal reasons and so I can't enter my food until the end of the day. So, I always end up eating too much because I can't track as I go. I am going to download calorieking and see how it works for tracking. Also, I have added the sprakpeople food look up to my favs file on my pda. Now I can at least check for calorie content before I snack. Thanks for the advice here and for keeping this post active. Maybe we'll get our wish for an SP PDA download.....hint hint :)

I think this would be great if they would bring back a pda version of sparkpeople.com... It would help you when your're not at a computer and you can see how many calories you have already eaten or how much exercise you have done for the day.

I guess if more people showed interest they will eventually bring it back.

that is neat Dave. I keep track of a lot of things in excel like my measurements. I love my PDA - its everything in one place, what I read, what I work on, who I call, games, music, my Bible and related resources. It could just use some sparkle . I do download information from sparkle to my pda for reference

Thanks for the comments! We actually never had a full PDA application, just something to view your goals.

If you have a smartphone or other mobile web device, we do have a calorie lookup tool available:

www.sparkpeople.com/mobile/

It's only for lookup tho, you can't save foods to your account.

I use the CalorieKing Palm OS Tracker on my iPaq Windows Mobile..(www.styletap.com). I like the community here on SP, yet I need the mobile ability to track and the only thing that is always near me is my PDA...

Is there a way to find an old copy of SP PDA?

I know this conversation has been here awhile and while I am new I would lvoe to see either a mobile version of the sparkpeople page or even better a spark people food tracker to install (and even sync! OR I could just copy and pastee:) on my pda. I have a dell axim x51v and love it but haven't found a program worth the money like the one here yet....but I will be lookin!

I think not being able to link my PDA to my computer is the only problem!! :(
I downloaded calorie King and thought it lacked some for the nice food traking options on here...
Maybe someday they will have a PDA program

Sparkpeople is a GREAT site. ONLY drawback for me is the inability to transfer data to and from my pda. I'll email Sparkpeople and let them know my feelings. I would encourage all interested to do the same!

I didn't notic this thread earlier and i just wrote an email to Spark about PDA's. I just bought this palm because i wanted to track my food and fitness easier (have alot of trouble making it to computer every day) and I was hoping that Spark would have something... now i'm off to look into calorie king and the balance one... but spark should really do something with this idea! It would be so great!

Thanks Mary,
I'm sure they have their hands full now but I hope they realize that PDA activity (especially SmartPhones) are becoming commonplace and will put this on their agenda for the future.

Hi everyone!

I emailed SP asking if they'd ever considered doing something for a PDA or Pocket PC (I have a Dell Axim) and below is the response. If you're really interested in having them work on it, please let them know. Maybe if enough of us show interest, they'll start to reconsider it....

"We used to have a version of SparkPeople for PDA's, but it wasn't used by many people so we discontinued it.

I wouldn't say we wouldn't ever consider it, but I can tell you it probably won't happen soon."

Just wanted to add my vote for a PDA application that can syncronize with Spark.

I also have a Treo 650 by the way... so a more mobile friendly version of the site would work as well.

Diet and Exercise Assistant is good. I have CalorieKIing and SouthBeach Diet for PDA Palm version that I use. King let's me add foods and track, but I too am looking for something a little more like we have here on SP.

For now I track on SP only because I don't wnat to enter things more then once a day. I would like to enter on SP then download to Palm or vice versa...as long as we keep SP free and not bogged down...

I also have an SD card that I store info on for my Palm so that helps with other info.

Hopefully one day the Techs will be able to help us on this matter, they are so good, I know they will...Thanks SP for doing such a good job now.

i have a demo of a Palm program called Diet and Exercise Assistant. because i have frequent internet access i haven't paid for the full version. i keep the demo because i travel a lot and even in demo mode i can access the food database. it appears to be able to track food and excercise in a way similar to Spark.

it's from Handango

If you have XP, there's one in Microsoft Works. It's in the Templates Fitness section. There's also one for your exercises. I modified it by making the rows wider and deleting the last snack section. It works better for me than anything else I've found online. I printed up a bunch and keep them in a notebook along with my recipes, journal, weight tracker and exercises that I like. Hope this helps! I just re-read this and I saw PDF, instead of PDA. I guess I should wear the glasses more! OOPS

major bump!!

i would LOVE a downloadable app (so no internet is needed) to track food on a PDA.

if it could include our stored/manually-entered foods, that would be a major plus!!

What an EXCELLENT idea!! I also have a Dell Axim and LOVE it. I hadn't thought about using it for SP but it would be wonderful if I could do it that way... Right now I log on about 10 times a day to track my food. Hard to do on the weekends though, when I'm away from the computer!

Thanks for your input. Technology has changed a lot since 2004 when this thread was started. I'll make sure to pass on your suggestion about a "Mobile" web application. I know someone else suggested this in another thread as well.

I would really be in heaven if we could get a SP version of the Food Tracker!

I also have a Treo650 which has Internet access but the SP site it too heavy with graphics to be handled easily so it isn't really practical.

I know very little about the programming aspect of computers, however, if SP could provide a simple, graphics free version for our PDA, even if it didn't download the info, I, too, would be a happy camper.

In the meantime, I'm still a happy camper!

***I'm surprised nobody has mentioned balancelog for Palm. I love it. It tracks all nutrients, includes a lot of restaurants, and is easy to use.***

Just an FYI that the company that produced BalanceLog went out of business earlier this year.

Back before my company gave me a blackberry, I used to use the software on the Palm. It is a great piece of software. Too bad they never developed it to its true potential.

I agree 100%! I only have inet access 2 days a week and on those days I am religious about tracking my progress on SP. However, on the other 5 days of the week, I am SO off. I've thought of the SP on a PDA thing before and just searched PDA on the message boards to see if there is any talk about something coming out soon. It would be worth investing in a PDA if SP had that option!

I would just like to know if there is a way that this site could work better with mobile web. I have a Palm Treo 650, with a broadband connection, but it usually crashes when I am logging food. I think it's due to the fact that the "add a food" is a seperate window. Doesn't work well with Palm's blazer web browser.

I have the Axim x51v. I just got it last week. I had a Compac iPac. It worked pretty well, but, I used it mostly for Pocket Money and thought it broke. So my husband, bought me this Dell as and early B-Day present, knowing how many programs they make for it now. I haven't even learned most of the features for it...it can do so much!

I just got a new PDA (it's a Dell, not Palm...but, it's AWESOME!) Has anyone found any other diet program to run on it. I have seen several, but, don't want to waste my money if it isn't worth it. I do think it would be awesome if Spark had a PDA version (it would just have to run on a Microsoft OS for mine)...that way you could just sync them at the end of the day!

I agree. I just got a Palm and would love to have some type of tracker on it. I have downloaded some trials of other trackers, but they are not as easy to use or as complete as the information on this website.

Now I am just making notes and then transferring them to my online tracker later.

I have a Palm, but the software could be an excel based program and that would work on any PDA, except for the less expensive database PDA's that are mainly used for address books. A true PDA would easily run an excel program or maybe an access program.

Just a thought.

I wish that the database could be converted so that it could be downloaded into a PDA so it would give you the oppurtunity to not only track your food but now where you stand on your calories as you go or better yet it would allow you to know the right thing to order to stay within range while you are at the resturaunt. Then you could download your menu daily to update the web.

Just a thought.
