| I did atkins in high school (about 30 years ago), lost weight and felt great. I've tried it again in the last several years and had trouble with it. I do think that my body has an issue with carbs. For me, cutting back on carbs really changes my appetite for the better. If I can replace rice and pasta with greans and veggies, I feel better and am not hungry all the time. If I don't, any kind of dieting is nearly impossible.

I think just learning what is healthy for you is the best diet. Food: consuming it in moderation, and learning to say no to sugar, and yes to exercise is the only DIET that will work long term w/o any damage to your body in some form or another. Our bodies are designed to work on healthy natural food. You wouldn't put anything other than gasoline in your car! We are fine food burning engines when we fuel it properly. We can't depend on some genius to re-invent the wheel for us (Fad Diets) when our body works perfectly if we treat it right with a healthy diet and a good amount exercise. We have just all become too MODERN! Our living styles have changed dramatically, but our bodies... require the same old nutrition and fitness plan. :) Be healthy Everybody!

I did the atkins diet a few years ago and it worked brilliantly. I lost a good amount of weight in a short space of time. The only thing I personally found with it is that I got sick and tired of eating so much meat & so much food! Also, I couldn't stick to it becuase I actually found my body craving (good) carbs, especially when I was active!

Here was my experience:
THE GOOD: I quickly kicked my carb additictions, and never ever ever felt hungry.
THE BAD:I only lost 3lbs in 6 weeks. ACK!!! I stayed in "induction" the entire time also. And yes - I READ THE BOOK COVER TO COVER. I was in "ketosis" every day. there are a lot of factors that can cause you to not loose, and I was seriously tired of trying to figure out what I was doing wrong - imagine week after week not losing an inch or a pound on a diet that promises dramatic results quickly... what a nightmare! And the more information I got the worse the outcome looked for me. The book described me as having the slowest metabolism possible, and because of that I would never be able to eat (even as I progressed into the more liberal stages of the diet) more than 25-35 grams of carbohydrates. That is not a lifestyle I am willing to live. Also, as the weeks went on, I lost more and more of my energy. I was going to bed 2 hours before my normal time, and waking up feeling like a zombie. This was the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak. At the end of week 6 I came back to SP.

| All of the articles they have on SP don't encourage the Adkins Diet.

It was the first diet I ever tried. I was about 19 or 20 years old, and I lost 45 lbs in 6 weeks. Unfortunately, I was NEVER able to re-introduce carbs and graduate to the next stage without immediate weight gain. I gave up and gained, and stayed obese for many years until I found spark. To my utter amazement, I have lost 55 lbs in the past 5 months, and I haven't really given up anything but bad habits.

At work, the atkins was the big new way to lose weight. It seemed to work for them. At the time I'd not tried it. After seeing results from them, I tried. Soon after one of the Gal's was complaining of dizziness. She drives a school bus! It was frightening to me, so I quit. Envisioning a catastrophe ahead for someone and I didn't want it to be one my bus! She ended up having to go to the doctor and see a nutritionist. She was really sick, and not getting enough vitamins and minerals. Soon after she gained all her weight back because she disregarded what the Doctor told her, and went back to her old habits.

| My sister has lost nearly 30 lbs on atkins. I do worry about her health because she doesn't seem to be eating very healthy. But, I haven't read the book and maybe she knows what she is doing. But her little skinny butt is the reason I'm trying to loose. Thank goodness for that friendly sister rivalry!!

I read Dr. atkins book, cut out the bad starches and fruits, took my vitamins, exercised, and dropped 50lbs in 6 mo. I kept it off for almost 8 yrs. I gained 40 back in the past 1 1/2 yrs due to increased carbs and inactivity due to health. I joined WW and lost 24lbs in the first 4 mo.,following the plan faithful for 1 1/2 yrs. I never lost more than that initial 25lbs because it is a high carb diet and I learned my body can't handle the carbs after doing Atkins. I like using SP because I can make it fit my eating style.

| Basically it works the same as any "diet" you cut out a major portion of the things you usually eat. Anytime you cut out a major portion of the things you usually eat you are going to lose weight. However, like in any diet, when you put those things you were avoiding back in, the weight comes back.

| I did atkins after my second daughter was born. I lost the last 10 pound from that preganancy and have not gaine it back. I used it to jump start and to get rid of those 10 pounds I had been holding on to for almost a year. Worked for me! Never did it again.

| Atkins is a very nutritionally sound diet that is VERY effective if you follow it properly. The best way to learn about the diet is to read Dr. atkins book. Find it at your local library. These people who tell you that it's bad did NOT follow the diet. And the book will tell you in the very beginning that in this diet, there can be NO cheating in the first few weeks. It's CRUCIAL!!! The first few weeks of "induction" starts your body into a very key phase of "ketosis" that aids your body in burning it's fat reserves as fuel, instead of carbohydrates. Induction is also, most importantly, used as a way to kick away your carb addictions. Most all of my family and friends are on this diet and they have not had a single issue with it. My FIL has lost almost 50 lbs since January 07 and his blood levels have never been better! Contrary to what most of the others said here, the only things that atkins really cuts out completely are STARCHY foods. Potatoes, Carrots, bread. BUT rye bread, and some other whole wheat grains are accepted into the later phases. AND if you follow this plan as the book states TO THE LETTER, then you will have absolutely NO problem keeping this Way Of Life BECAUSE you will have kicked your cravings. Do some research for yourself and you will find out that atkins was recently named YET AGAIN!! the most successful diet around!! :-)

You know... that is what led me here! I did atkins years ago before I was pregnant. Now that I have a son I tried it and it made me an emotional WRECK!!! I don't know what EXACTLY changed b/c it wasn't like that in the past.
HOwever I had a mini ephiphany.. I realize I need to get healthy, overall. atkins can help jumpstart you but where are you then? This site gives you tools that you can use daily and I like that. I feel like nothing is off limits, as long as it's portion controlled and I've eaten fruits / veggies / whole grain / lean protein daily. Exercise too.

| I have never tried the atkins diet... just reading about it turned me off. My husband and a girl friend tried it and didn't stick with it. It is just not a diet you can work into your regular lifestyle and has way too many restrictions on good for you food.

Hey guys, My husband and I did try atkins one time and i didn't care for it. You can't even eat that many veggies and I'm not veagan but I don't eat that much meat.If your gonna try something strict like that I would go with the south beach diet. That one worked better for me but didn't limit as bad(except the first 2 weeks). If you can I would just watch what you eat and track it like they do here. So far it has worked for me but everyone is different. Do what is healthy for you.

| There is no way I can make that type of a lifestyle change. I tried it once and felt so crappy! Bleech!!! Also, any diet that tells you that you shouldn't eat fruit or certain veggies...NUTS I say!

| Be very careful with all diets. atkins cuts out carbs but increases proteins and other areas. You may loose weight but it could do damage to other areas like your heart and arteries. Slow and steady wins the race. Eat healthy well balanced diet and you will loose the weight.

| I did atkins for one month to lose the last 10 pounds of my baby weight that I could not seem to get rid of otherwise. I went from 137 to 123 and have not gone back since then, currently I am at 121. It is a restrictive diet but very sucessful if you follow it carefully. I know people who had also lots of success on South Beach, slower weight loss but very similar to Atkins. Less restrictive in the carbs area. Research both diets and do the one that seems more possible to your lifestyle.

If you follow the atkins diet closely, you will lose weight. I followed it on and off for many years because I suffer from reactive hypoglycemia, and it was exactly what I needed for that condition. The only problllem, for me was that I missed eating whole grains and fruits. I still try to limit my carbs as much as possible, so in effect, I'm still following the basic principles of ATkins.
Good luck.
