I set a timer and if I have not gotten up that hour, which can happen real easy, it goes off and I get up and get to moving this bum... Sorry if you thought different. Sparkpeople does have a good article on how to exercise at your desk. Go find it and read it, it does have some things you can do while sitting.
Good luck.

Hi Kitt!
Please tell me how you do 500 steps an hour when you are sitting at the computer all day! I also have a desk job and really struggle to get my steps in! Any advice will be appreciated!
|
|
|
|
It is a fun way of challenging yourself. I try to do better each day even if its only a few steps. It also a way to motivate yourself. If you look at it and see how many step , you might just want to do more and more. On days I'm feeling lazy it helps me to not be as lazy. I make sure I do at least 500 steps per hour when I'm just sitting at the computer.

I've been wearing mine (Omron HJ-105) since I started, and I love it.
Now that we can add notes to our nutrition and fitness trackers, I list my steps there. I tend to round the number to the nearest lower 250, to compensate for any inaccuracy.

| I think the pedometer is a great tool, if we can firgue out how to keep them on! I lost my first one, got one on its way to me, it has a bigger clip!!!!

I clip my ped. to my sock and hav not had any trouble with it. I bought mine at wal mart for 3.89 so cheap but it works good . it tells miles and steps. It might not be accurate but the goal for me is to do more and more steps everyday. I don't use it when I work out as it will jump to 4 or 7 steps when you have not done that many. I use mine just when from the time I get up till I go to bed and take it off for my workouts. I don't count it as my cardio but use it for a thread on a virtual hike, wow is that fun.

Hi there! I'm new to this thread- I recently got a free pedometer an thought one day- oh well I may as well put it on and see... I got a HUGE fright! I only did 584 steps in the WHOLE day- I also put it on from the minute I got dressed to the minute I went to bed1 I knew I was sedentary- I do work at a desk all day- but I had no IDEA I was getting so few steps in!
I'm wearing it everyday now- but unless I manage to get an hours walk in after work- I only get about 2500 steps- I have a long way to go to get to 10000.
It's great to hear all the ideas for the pedometer on this thread- and I'm going to try the dancing while cooking to see how much difference it makes!

| I too have had problems with my pedometer falling off. If I wear pants that have pockets I clip it on backwards so that if it slips off at least it goes in the pocket. I have been wearing dresses to work this week because of the heat. I tried the panties thing put did not work. I do not know where to hook them on dresses. I just started the 10,000 steps. What a great goal.

Deedum, you are too cute. You should wear it on your heals. Paris Hilton and Lindsy Lohan have made "ankle bracelets" the in thing these days. you would fit right in.

someone else said you can clip it to your shoelace, but since I wear heels to work, that won't work for me, but others it might! However, I do wear undies!

There's a concept. I am such a dork. It came with a cord. I didn't attach it because I thought "I'm not going to carry it.". Duh. I will do that right now. This is why I go to the boards! thanks!

It worked! I clipped to my unders! And it stayed in place. Well, I did drop it once in the middle of the day and it irased my sreps. I need to be more careful when using the restroom! But, I did over 6800 after the drop. So I'm guessing I did arount 10,000.

| I paid $8 and change at Walmart for mine. It has a cover on it, to cover the reset button. I, too, had a problem with mine staying on the top of my pants and falling off, and someone suggested to clip the meter at my hip, on the top of my undies. I have never had a problem with it falling off, the top of my pants hold the pedometer in place. I just unclip the meter when I go to the bathroom so it doesn't fall off and reset because of a hard landing. Hope this helps.

|
| I paid $5 for mine on Ebay. It keeps falling off. I just started yesterday. I will give it a week. If I haven't mastered it by then I will get a new one. It sure does make a difference in your mindset though. Ooo if I park here I could have 10 extra steps. If I go the long way to the bathroom I can add a frew more. If I dane or walk in place while I prepare and cook dinner, that really adds up! So EXCITING@!

| I got a new pedometer yesterday from our 10,000 steps a day program at work. The directions say it will not count accurately if attached to a shoe or pants pocket - should always be worn at the waist, so be sure to check the directions for your particular pedometer. Mine is an inexpensive one, so probably not as sensitive as others.

Here's the reply I got from Support - what a quick response!
Hi, You can use the add cardio feature to track your walking on our site and calories burned. If your pedometer gives you a calories burned estimate, you can use the manually entered option under add cardio on your my fitness page to track your steps that way. Next, you can visit our help/FAQ page from the top left of your start page for tips for using the site and options available. I believe there is a step counter in the works for future changes. I hope this helps!

Because of the way my waist folds next to my hips I keep my pedometer on my shoe it seams to track just fine it you ever find out were we can post our steps Please let us know I post mine on a weight watchers board I just love the group

What you have to remember with a pedometer is that they are motion oriented. It can't tell the difference between an actual step and you just joggling the pedometer a bit. If you have it on your trouser waistband for instance, it'll register a few steps every time you pull your trousers up and down to go to the bathroom!!!! You need to use it as a guide more than anything else.

| Just like with most things, you get what you pay for! I've had multiple $3.99 and freebie pedometers and thats about all they are worth. I just received my new one in the mail today - Omron HJ112. I ordered it from Amazon.com. It was about $17 but I had a $10 discount code. It gets great reviews & has good features so I'm looking forward to trying it out!

| I'm also having a problem with my pedometer. It was free from a website someone recommended, but sometimes after walking the length of my kitchen it will say I walked 40 steps. (I live in a small apartment so I KNOW that is NOT true). What should I do about that? I'm guessing the best thing to do would be to just spend the money and buy one. BUT I REALLY WANT MY FREE ONE TO WORK!

I just bought an OMRON HJ-105, it is really good, of course you have to set up the stride, but after that all you do is clip it on ( a belt) waist and it will stay put. The belt u ware also helps form a waistline( just some x-tar info. This pedometer also has a cover -so you don't press the reset button. I paid $ 13.00. I like it. Hope this helps.

| I have two different pedometers and I have not gotten any degree of accuracy from either. I use them at work but Im always bending and picking up things, I keep knocking them off and the battery flys out and its back to zero... so I gave up. Tried them on my shoe also, but I think it only records every other step.. thats no good either.

Lindan, I am not sure what the "30" on your pedometer is. You might check for instructions for it on the internet by brand name and model. The one I am using lets me select stride length in 1/4 foot increments..... so mine is set at 2.75 feet per stride. After measuring a mile with a speedometer, I walked it and set the stride length. Then, as a check I walked the same mile and looked to see that it was registering right at a mile.

Phuba - I have a question about the stride length that you mentioned. My pedometer was given to me with no instructions. I think it was set on 30 when I got it. I don't even know what the 30 represents...is that inches?
I think it would be fun to have a spot to record steps per day but not for cardio credit..just as a challenge to myself to keep increasing my activity level through the day. I suppose I can just record it on my calendar but it's lots more fun to track stuff here!
|
|
|
|
I think there are some groups that track pedometer steps.
Remember that unless you raise that heart rate for an extended period of time, you really cannot count it as miles walked for cardio. Normal walking throughout the day is already figured into your bmr.
I do count miles walked with a pedometer when I do my cardio.
First thing to do is drive the course you plan to walk, and make note of exactly a mile on that route.
Then walk that same route, and the pedometer counts the steps it takes you to walk that distance.
Then divide 5280 (feet in a mile) by the number of steps it took, to figure out your stride length.
Then adjust your stride length on your pedometer, and you are set to go. Then the pedometer keeps track of your distance without you having to walk a certain route.
hope that helps.

| Add me to the list of people who would love to have a place to enter daily pedometer steps. I understand it shouldn't go under cardio since most of it probably doesn't get our heart rate up enough to qualify...but why can't we have a place just for this? If for no other reason than an incentive for people to move more.

Supposedly 10,000 steps is 3.5 miles but it depends on your stride length. According to many articles I've read by health & fitness experts, 10,000 steps is what we should strive for each day.
I'm still working on it...haven't gotten there yet. It's a little difficult with a desk job!
