P,

You might want to start a new thread for this topic in the Cafe or Diet forum. The most recent post before yours in this thread was more than a year ago, so you're not as likely to get a response.

I see that you all have a lot of great ideas for working out, but I have a problem with eating. I am in the travel industry and I have very little time to even think about getting to a grocery store on my short overnights. I tend to bring my meals with me, but it is hard to find anything that will not spoil when I am gone for two to four days and have only ice packs to keep food cool. I have done the tuna packs, I always try to bring fruit and veggies, but it is hard to keep the meals interesting. I get bored easily. Do you have any suggestions on non-parishables that I could take along?

I agree with you on the walking. If I can't do anything else, I try to walk as much as possible! Enjoy your vacation!

I'll be travelling for about six weeks later on this year [happily on vacation] and will have to watch the weight of my luggage. Apart from my pedometer, which will hopefully motivate me to keep moving, I'm planning to take resistance bands, minus the handles, as they're light and don't take up very much space.

The weights alone would be exercise enough! Some would say my suitcase is so heavy it must contain weights! :-)

Great tips, Matt!

It sounds like you've been out in the trenches for quite a while!

(Somehow, I can't see myself traveling with the weights, though!)

Thank you both for your suggestions. I'll give them a try and let you know how I'm doing after my next trip -- to Poland -- in mid-June! Hope you had a great holiday weekend! Lauren

Ok. vacation is not what a business traveler gets. You are on the road and you work more hours than normal and relaxation is far from what I get while on the road. Planned meals are out of the questions since I can't plan much of anything - but I do have some very good suggestions -

1) Find a place to work out if possible.
a) Gold's Gym or one of the other gyms may be available free to hotel guests. Usually, RESIDENCE INN has that type of membership.
b) the hotel may have some kind of fitness area usually not always in good shape but some have some outstanding facilities.
c) Swim in the pool if that is your choice of exercise and remember there is no one there you have to impress!

2) I carry a stability ball and a set of adjustable weights. They go up to 30 lbs for my hand held and 45 lbs for my bar bell.

3) DVD's also are available for working out.

4) If you are on a longer term project - find a dance class, jazzercise class, yoga class. Or find a place to at least walk during lunch which is hard to do.

What ever you do just get up, get out and get going.

Now eating is another problem. Plenty of grocery stores have salad bars - hard to measure but if you use your hand as you basis for measure it will help

Thumb is about an ounce of cheese. Palm the serving size of a serving size of meat. Fist is about the size of a serving of potato/rice. Vegetables as long as they are raw or steamed - I just eat as much as I want.

I carry fruit to the office and I buy enough bottled water to hit my 8 glasses a day for the number of days I am traveling.

It is up to the traveler to figure this out - and it is hard for someone who doesn't do this every week to understand the type of environment that is involved in being a road warrior.

Lcstates,

Here are a few articles I found in the Fitness and Nutrition Resource Centers that might help you when you are out on the road. There might be others, so check out the Resource Center for more information!

Great idea! Unfortuntately I'm going to tell you such a program USED to exist. There was a program called "co-pilot" that was desktop based and could download/upload with the website. There were several reasons the program was removed from the site, and it has obviously yet to be replaced. Right now the best option is to print out some of the blank "meal planners" so you can records what you've eaten in the day.

I love the idea of having more tips for business travelers or people who tend to be on the road a lot. Great suggestions!

Hi. I love using this service and I find it very effective. However, when I am on the road, it is very difficult to use because the application is browser based. It would be great if I could download the meal planner and goal tracker to my laptop and keep track offline and then upload my results when I am able to reconnect to the internet. I'd also love to see more tips for business travelers who tend to have crazy schedules, no chance to maintain a routine and have to dine out several nights a week. Thanks!!
