In the SparkPeople reference guide on exercise intensity at

http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/reference_intensity.asp

...there appears to be an error in the Karvonen Formula for calculating target heart rate.

The formula in the article is:

(MHR – RHR) x (Intensity + RHR) = Target Heart Rate

The parentheses seem to be misplaced; to replicate the steps in the example, I believe that the correct formula would be:

((MHR – RHR) x Intensity) + RHR = Target Heart Rate

I.e.,
1. Get the difference between MHR and RHR.
2. Multiple by intensity
3. add RHR.

If the formula in the article were followed, the steps for calculating target heart rate would be:
1. get the difference between MHR and RHR.
2. get the sum of intensity and RHR.
3. multiply the difference (from step 1) and the sum (from step 2).

Cheers,

Bob
