I think that keeping a nightly journal is a great idea. I used to keep a journal but i don't really do that anymore. That is one thing that could help to keep you motivated. I think that i may do the same thing like you so i can decide what i need to do for the next day. That's a very good idea and i think that i'm going to steal it from you, lol. =]

A little bit ago, I decided to start writing about my day before I go to sleep. I wouldnt write about how classes went or anything, I wrote about things I was disappointed with. For instance "today, I ate 300 calories over what I hoped to, and I only did 25 pushups". Then, every morning I read it and decide to do better. It works for me, but it may not work for all!
