| I agree that the best way to get toned muscle is to switch up the exercises a bit.. in that manner, its nearly impossible to get too much bulk in any one area because they all use different muscles. Plus, the variety is much more interesting! So, perhaps you should cut down on the running from everyday or most of the week to maybe two days a week and then on alternative days do some swimming, or even dancing, yoga, or pilates. Pilates is actually a really really great way to specify toning in parts of the body, and slenderizing, but exercising, and you don't bulk up because you take it gradually. Although I know you didn't ask about it lol.. and yoga/dancing is good in that "variety" sense too.

Honestly, they can say all they want about chicks muscles NOT getting bulky, but I know for a fact chicks CAN get bulky without steriods and crap....just not as bad as guys.
Swimming adds more resistance than running and burns more calories but you DO get slimmer. Of course you'll feel more hungry after swimming, but then again you burned way more calories than you would running/jogging...depending on the intensity you do.

| I personally feel lighter and more exhausted after swimming but as the post below me said, I believe it does leave you quite hungry. I think it's a lot more enjoyable than running and can be easier (depends on the intensity and your personl experience).

I gained 8 pounds during the most intensive swim season, and I'm pretty sure it is not in muscle.
Swimming makes your body tierd and hungry, while running doesn't make you as hungry feeling as swimming. The less hungry you feel the less you eat.
Do what you ebjoy, but just be warned!

Most females do not have the hormone levels necessary to gain a lot of muscle. Sometimes you do gain a little muscle faster than you're losing fat, so you appear more "bulky". But that's only a temporary thing and will go away as you lose the fat.
So I'd recommend sticking with the exercises you enjoy and not worry about getting bulky.
Hope that helps,
Coach Jen

I am trying to get long toned muscles in my legs. Right now I am running but the muscles I am getting are big and bulky.
Is swimming a better exercise if I want the sleek toned look rather than the muscular one?
