When I used to cheer I'd get random charlie horses. Someone told me that drinking milk while suffering from a leg cramp oftened helps a bit, but I don't know. I'd say to stretch beforehand is the real way to prevent charlie horses.
The idea someone stated before is good - go swimming. That way you won't have pressure on your leg and can still work out.

Stretch it. I've only ever gotten one charlie horse, it was at track pratice and my coach stretched it and massaged it and it felt better, although that was right when it happened.
You should be fine, if it's too sore, do some exercises that don't put a lot of pressure on it. Swimming perhaps? Pilates? Yoga?

I would suggest walking, but you said that it even hurt to walk on it.
So instead I would concentrate on doing a one legged jump rope alteration. Just doing enough on the one leg until it hurts too bad. Despite popular belief jump roping is very good for you, a quick cardio workout.

My legs were already comfortably sore yesterday but I knew I should still get my workout in (just 45 minutes elliptical). I kept the resistance lower than usual and went a bit slower.
however, i woke up early this morning, clutching my leg from the sudden charlie horse. i've only had one of them before until thismorning.
i really want to get my workout in tonight...i workout 6 days a week. it's just really painful to walk on my left leg. is there anything i should do or even CAN do so that i can still work out and not fall over in agony from the pain lol.
you can bet i will definitely start stretching before i exercise after this!
