The amount of extra calories you'll burn by putting weights on your ankles is actually VERY minimal--we're talking like an extra 10 calories for example. However, the increased risk of injury by using ankle weights is much higher. I'd say that the small benefit would not outweigh the risks--we don't recommend that people exercise with wrist or ankle weights. However, for walkers, there are things called weighted vests, which are just that--vests that you wear on your torso, which is not only more comfortable but also safer. They cost more, but if you wanted to take your walks to the next level, burn more calories and improve your fitness level, that is one option.

5 pounds is pretty heavy, have you used any other ankle weights before? Because, like other weights, you have to build up to heavier weights.
But yes, they will burn more calories because your muscles will be working harder.
