Everyone is different, so it's going to vary from person to person. I'd recommend doing 1-2 sets of 8-12 reps. When you get to the last repetition, that should be the last one you can do in good form. So if you're doing a set of 12, for example, and could easily keep going past 12, the weight is too light. If you can't get anywhere close to 12, the weight is too heavy. So you want to be somewhere in between.
