Runner- It's doubtful that you packed on 5 pounds of muscle or fat. Most likely, your muscles are holding on to more water--this is normal and it happens in response to exercise, especially when you're starting out.
The PP is right--don't worry about the scale. Do you look like you gained five pounds? Are your jeans tighter? If not, you really haven't put on five true pounds--it's just normal weight fluctuation.

I do know that muscle weighs more than fat! However, the only thing I really know about gaining muscle is that it takes a lot of work to gain a pound of it-- the problem is that "a lot" is not a set number, so I'm not too sure. I guess I'm not too great of a help... You could try messaging the coaches or wait for them to answer this post.
But, even if you overlook the fact that you've gained 5 pounds, have you lost inches? Because inches are way more reliable than measurement with weight. Weight fluctuates day to day and your waist doesn't. I mean, I "lost" 3 pounds since yesterday...

I run Cross Country/ Track at my school, and ever since the pre-season started(about 4 weeks ago) I've gained 5 pounds, and I've been running 4 miles a day AND limiting my calories. Can this be from gaining muscle?
