K9-
What a great gift! I'd recommending asking the staff at your gym whether new members are entitled to 1 (or sometimes a few) free sessions with a trainer. If so (many gyms do offer this), take advantage of it and use that time to have the trainer show you how to use the equipment that you're interested in, or explain which ones are good for your goals.

Also, check out our Fitness Resource Center for more gym ideas--we have a section for Fitness Equipment How-To's there, which explains how to use cardio and some weight machines (and what muscles they work).

Good luck reaching your goals!

for christmas, i finally got a membership to a gym in town. so i'm going with my brother tomorrow to start our membership but i haven't been to a gym in about 4 years. does anybody have any favorite machines that they recommend?

some information that might help:
i'm 17 years old and very inexperienced at the gym atmosphere.
i'm small, but i'm pretty strong.
i like to run (i'm on cross country).
i will work on anything on my body, but i'd like to work on my stomach (hopefully to be abs soon).

i think thats all the info you need but if anyone could help, that would be great! thank you!
