| I always feel like the elliptical machine is incorrect on the calories burned meter. I can run on the treadmill for 30 minutes, totally be dead afterwards and burn 300 calories. Then I get on the elliptical, go at a light easy pace, hardly sweat at all, and it says I burned 300 calories in 30 minutes. I think its all about the effort you exert, don't listen to the machine.

Yep, based on how you're feeling you'd use that scale to gauge your intensity.

Ok, thanks a lot! I have been researching both methods you mentioned and will definitely try the talk test next time I use the elliptical. I didn't really get the R.P.E., though. Is it just about how I am feel or did I get that wrong? Again, thanks for answering!

G,
Ah- gotcha. There are other ways to measure the intensity of your workout like the Talk Test or Rate of Perceived Exertion (you can do a search in the box at the top of the page for both of these terms). Sometimes those are better indicators than heart rate since everyone is so different.
Hope that helps,
Coach Jen

I did understand the explanation of the previous poster and already calculated. But what I was saying is that I never ever got above 56% of that maximum heart rate - no matter what I was doing (could have run, rope skipped or whatever). So I wonder if 203 is really my maximum heart rate... Anyway, I don't really bother too much about the calories I burn - I was just curious why there was such a great difference between the elliptical's display and the fitness tracker! Thanks a lot for answering so fast!

G,
What the previous poster is saying is that 203 would be the max your heart can possibly go. You would never want to go that high during exercise, so like they said, multiply 203 by 60% and by 80% to figure out the range you should be working in.
Hope that helps,

Are you sure about that 220-age rule? I think I have never ever gotten up to a heart rate of 203! My resting heart rate is not particularly high so maybe I am not able to get to 203 after all... Anyway my heart rate is usually around 105 when I am using the elliptical. Even at a very high resistence I won't get past 115 (which would be ~56%)... So maybe the elliptical is right after all and I do only burn 112kcal per hour.... Anyway, thanks for answering and explaining

| 220-your age = your heart at 100%. When you do cardio, it should be between 60-80% of your max. I doesn't give you your calories burned, but give you the indication you are working enough. If it is so low, try increasing the resistance?

I don't think the elliptical is personalize-able. I can check my heartrate though (it's got some sort of electrodes on the handles which measure your heartrate and display it afterwards. How would knowing my heartrate assist me in finding out how many calories I burn?
Thanks for answering!

| If your elliptical has a display, then there's a good chance you can personalize it with your body weight, heart rate, etc. Check to see if it's preset for another member of your family who has a different weight/heart rate than you do.

Anina,
112 calories sounds low for an hour. My guess is that it's actually somewhere between that and the number we give (since average numbers in a database tend to be overstated a little.) The only way to know for sure would be to wear a heart rate monitor.

Hey, I have got one of those elliptical machine at home, that have a display showing you speed, calories burned, pulse etc., and like to use it while watching tv or when I don't have a lot of time. So a couple of days ago I spent a whole hour on the machine (watching a show). I was checking how many calories I had burned and it showed 112kcal. (I thought this was pretty little since I was going at a pretty fast speed, but never mind). Anyway I wanted to add my 60 minutes on the trainer to my cardio-workout-fitness-tracker and it was recorded as 540kcal. Now I am slightly confused as to which value is more correct!
Thanks in advance, Anina
