Your friends advice is very good. Portion control is the key to anything. 2 cookies and a glass of milk can be a wonderful and nutritious snack. Sitting and midlessly eating without knowing how many you eat and having a sugary drink is not nutritous and just empty calories.

Eating your meals also means watching your portion sizes as well. Try to limit the snacky junk foods you select and go for raisins, cheese, yogurt, Peanut Butter sandwiches, fresh fruit, milk etc for between meal snacks.

You could also encourage your mom to join Spark People (www.sparkpeople.com) so she can begin to learn some new meal planning stategies that will not only help and support you but your entire family as you work to become healthier eaters.

My mom JUST went grocery shopping and she hasn't brought home any "healthier" foods. I know myself well enough to know there's a good chance of me "overindulging" in the sweets? I've tried diet foods such as "Slim Fast" but honestly, they're "GROSS"! They end up sitting in the storage closet collecting dust. I've also tried weight watchers "Smart Choice" frozen foods but they don't come up to par with my taste prefrences. So they sit in my freezer getting freezer burned!! My friend told me just to watch what I eat by using portion control. Is this helpful advice? What if I dont get enough calories in the day? Are there some other tips to eating what's already here without sabatoging my diet?
