We have the exact same problem and recently this has been such a road block in my weight loss, so I went to extreme (kinda) measures to fix the problem.
First of all, create a menu of everything you plan to eat the next day and if you don't trust yourself (which I don't, haha), write down a rough estimate of the time that you would eat them. Normally I do breakfast (usually 200 cal), snack (100), lunch (400), snack (100), and then dinner (however many calories it turns out to be, and you can safely eat a pretty large dinner with the calories still left over).
Test your new menu out for a week. And if it still doesn't restrain you from your habits, then it's time for plan B.
You still make your menus, but this time, prepare everything on your menu the night before (besides dinner, of course). Then, put it all in a lunch box/cooler/whatever container, and bring it upstairs in your room. So whenever it's meal time, simply go to your room and eat the food from there. This way, you don't have to wander into the kitchen full of other tempting foods. If you're wandering into the pantry or the fridge for food, you know that there's something wrong, because everything that you eat should come out of the lunch box.
Also, I suggest eating your food (as always, excluding dinner) while doing something else, like while browsing the Internet. People say that that makes you want to keep reaching inside the Doritios bag for more chips but 1) if you prepared your meals early, you should only have one serving of chips to begin with and 2) I find that if you focus your mind on something other than food, it takes the want to refill your bowl again and again.
I hope these tips worked. This is my first day doing the lunch box thing, and it's worked for me so far, so I must be doing something right! Good luck!

That was the hardest problem for me. I could never stop munching. I think the best two things to do are 1.) after that first bowl of cereal, get up, get out of the kitchen, and either drink water or brush your teeth to get that yucky spit-and-cereal taste out of your mouth. That's what usually triggers the want to eat for me: the need to have something that tastes good. And, 2.) If you're doing something like watching TV or going on the computer, have a bottle of water with you, and keep it open.
The thing about munching is that you need to do something with your mouth and hands. If they're already doing stuff, there's no room for food!
Another good thing to do is find something to do after you eat that you get really involved in, like drawing or reading a really good book. Then you can just get lost in whatever you're doing for a couple hours, and you won't be eating.

after your bowl of cereal, get out of the kitchen and drink a large glass of water. brush your teeth so you have that nice minty feeling in your mouth so you won't want to mess that up :)
i dont think its binging...it just sounds like mindless munching.

When you're eating don't do anything but eat if your on the computer or something you won't pay attention to how much you eat.

so here's my problem. early in the morning ill come back from swimming lessons and i wont be hungry. but since breakfast is a very important meal, i have a bowl of cereal or something. once i finish that bowl, next thing i know, im having another, and another, and another! then for the whole rest of the day, i dont spend more than ten minutes without some kind of food in my mouth. i want to consider it binging, because i continue eating even if im completely full. helppp?
also i noticed tat after swimming, if i go straight back to bed without eating a breakfast yet, ill wake up like a little after noon and i still wont be hungry. i wonder if its that first bite of food tat triggers it.
