I also want to point out that there is a difference between "dieting" and "living a healthy lifestyle", meaning they come with different factors and benefits. Partially hydrogenated oils (PHO) won't necessarily bring weight loss to a halt, so it won't affect a person who is just focused on "dieting" to lose weight. But those who want to live a healthy lifestyle will watch out for PHO and trans fats levels. Just like those who are simply dieting won't mind using Splenda or Equal because they have no calories - while someone who wants to make a healthy change will not consume synthetic sugars because of the reported health risks.

i dont know about all of this trans fats stuff but if you like granola bars i would stick with organic ones that are low in sugar and check the ingredients so you know that it is really healthy

If I'm not mistaken, it's "partially hydrogenated" that is trans fat.

Actually, I read somewhere that hydrogenated oils aren't trans fats. Only something that's partially hydrogenated is a trans fat; otherwise it's a saturated fat.

Edit: "Hydrogenated" could still mean "partially hydrogenated." It's only safe (saturated fats aren't that safe, but at least they're listed on the NF label) if it says "fully hydrogenated."

mhm those are trans fats. they are terrible for your heart. it might say no trans fat but really as long as the product has less than .5 grams of trans fat, they can say its a trans fat-free product. So those bars could have .49 grams of trans fat and still be "trans fat-free". say away from that stuff.

Are "partially hydrogenated" and "hydrogenated" equally bad for you?

I was reading the ingredients in a fiber One Oats & Chocolate Bar, and it said it has "hydrogenated coconut oil" and I was confused as to whether or not that's bad...

stay away from anything with "partially hydrogenated oils" or "hydrogenated oils". THey are a death sentence for your arteries. Try Kashi chewy granola bars - they are great and organic the Peanut Butter one is the best [if your allergic to the peanuts try the cherry dark choc.]

Quaker has some that are 25% less sugar... my favorite kind of granola bars are the quaker low fat dark chocolate cherry! Kashi makes dark chocolate cherry TLC bars that are good too!!

I know generally that granola bars are OK for you, but are they REALLY? most have alot of sugar, so is it still okay to eat while dieting?
