MUFA is shorthand for monounsaturated fat, a so-called "good fat", which helps reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and raise HDL (good) cholesterol.

There is a new diet out that states that you can lose your belly fat by eating 3 meals and 1 snack that are each 400 calories (1600 calories total which is typical for an adult but a little low for a teen) and that each meal should include 1 MUFA fat source. I have seen some other research from the diabetes association that including MUFA fats in your diet as your fat sources each day helps decrease insulin resistance which can lead to mid section fat distribution.

The bottom line is that it is important to include some fat in your diet each day. MUFA's are a great choice and dietary sources of MUFAs include olive, canola oils, avocados, peanuts, nuts and seeds.

It is most important to make sure you are getting enough calories, key nutrients and including regular activity including strength training to help sculpt your body. Put those all together and you will achieve your bodies best weight.
