I'm putting flax in oatmeal lately, also in smoothies where it is easy to deal with

Good idea about the apple sauce and the oatmeal...mmmmm
KSTYLE281 3/4/08 1:10 P
When I eat instant oatmeal packets, I add scrambled egg white 3-5 (depends on the size), a mini box of raisins, and slivered almonds. I mix that all up and it is yummy, well, to me. I got this "concoction" from someone on Spark many, many years ago and I still eat it. Some days, I'll just eat 2 packets if I don't make the eggs. Also I read that you are hungry after 2 hours of eating. Guess what? You should be! We should be eating every 2-3 hours, and if you are NOT hungry after 2-3 hours, you ate too much for your meal.

The nice thing about it is that it has different shapes and textures in it so it is not boring. My WW leader raved about fiber 1 which gives you a lot but it is boring - like rabbit pellets. This isn't cheap. I have to look back at my meal plans. My weight loss has slowed down and I wonder if it was when I finished the last box of Optimum. If you search for foods for your daily plan you will find Optimum Power. It's not the same but has the same number of calories.

Thank's for the link. I am going to look for it. One of my big goals is to get at least 35g of fiber each day. If that has 11g that would be wonderful.
MARGESLP 3/2/08 9:42 A
Here is the link so you can check out the nutrition. It has 11 gm fiber: http://www.worldpantry.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prmenbr=179660&prrfnbr=192409
It is a cold cereal. I find it in the organic section of a well stocked supermarket. I can't get it in my P&C but can get it in Syracuse Wegman's.
Sometimes I used it as the crunchy topping of FF yogurt and blueberries instead of breakfast cereal.

I am not familiar with Optimin Slim, what is it and where can I find it, if you get a chance to reply. I have been on Sparks for only a few days and love it already. So many great ideas, but right now have to get up and MOVE. thanks

I have a few more packets of the Instant oatmeal left. I start the day planning my menu on My Nutrition and put down my daily apple, orange, and cottage cheese and peaches in the snack column. I space these out during the day and usually go to the cottage cheese and peaches first around 10 a.m. Occasionally my blood sugar is low after oatmeal. If the protein in the cottage cheese doesn't help, I go for the apple or orange to straighten things out and that works. I had been eating Optimum Slim but decided to clean out the cupboards. It is so full of fiber! I am putting it back on my shopping list. depending on what my meal plan is for the rest of the day, I eat 2/3 or the full cup serving of the Optimum.

You do about as close as I do as anything I have read on this oatmeat topic! The old fashioned steel cut, or Irish Oatmeal, is the best for you overall and so simple. I also put in dried cranberrier, etc., so many options now. I have worked in natural food stores and cooked in alternative restaurants, vegetarian ones in the early 70's, and a lot of "older people" were raised on this, because it is filling and good for you! I love it at night, as I am a night time eater, and it keeps me from noshing at night! Thanks for this topic, so much good stuff!
KATYBIRD 2/29/08 8:02 P
Since it does not fill you up for breakfast, maybe it would be better to use it as your evening snack. I sometimes have a cup of oatmeal in the later evening and it keeps me from wanting to raid the refrigerator for a late midnight snack. :)
WILDHEARTSEASE 2/29/08 4:36 P
If you are finding that it isn't filling you up as a breakfast cereal, why not try adding it to your whole wheat/buckwheat pancake mix on the days you make pancakes? It is an added benefit to your pancakes.
MADELINE23 2/28/08 10:39 P
Instant Oatmeal is not enough, you must cook it from old fashioned or steel cut to get enough fiber for it to be filling. I cook old fashioned and add one apple thinly sliced and a little bit of brown sugar. It fills me for hours !

I had someone recommend Apple Sauce + Oatmeal as a snack idea once. I think it's an interesting idea, and plan on trying it sometime.
Has anyone here tried it before?
PLUSHIOUS 2/21/08 6:18 P
I also find oatmeal leaves me hungry faster. I have added unsweetened apple sauce to it after its done. It did keep me longer. But its not a preferred choice for breakfast.
STARRYIZZZ 2/21/08 12:41 P
I like the new Quaker Simply Harvest oatmeals. I can eat one package of this versus two of the instant and it lasts me til lunch time.
TEXMEZ 2/20/08 12:33 P
I wouldn't eat instant oatmeal if I were you - it breaks down too fast in your system and seriously spikes your insulin, making you crave later on.
Best choice is steel cut oats, and if you can't stand them, old fashioned slow cooking rolled oats is your better bet.
I had to dig this out from a pile of links I have on my own blogsite, but if you want to know how many minutes of exercise it's going to take to burn off a specific food, you might want to check this book out:
http://www.amazon.com/Diet-Detectives-Count-Down-Equivalents/dp/0743298004?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184701551&sr=8-1 Someone in here mentioned you should eat a protein with that, and they're correct. Carbs spike your insulin, so to prevent the carb crash, a protein levels it out so you don't eat the rug off the floor.
I'm not sure I'd eat oatmeal and toast together...that's a lot of carbs! If you were eating 1/3 c of old fashioned oat meal and 2 pieces of whole wheat bread, you're talking at least 44 grams of carbs, plus someone suggested topping it with peanut butter, which totals out to a whopping 61 grams of carbs. That's a lot to burn off.
JOYNOW! 2/13/08 10:52 A
These are some yummy ideas. :) I also like to add a T of ground flax seed to oatmeal- adds fiber, a little bit of protein, and those all-important Omega-3s.
SKICHIKA 2/13/08 12:12 A
The secret is...Peanut butter!!
Old fashioned oats + raisins + peanut butter, microwave all together for 2 minutes, + splash of milk = best breakfast ever!
LADYDI016 2/12/08 7:48 P
Ok... that sounds great. I wrote the recipe down and I'm going to try it tomorrow morning.
FTCMOM 2/12/08 10:19 A
I use the steel cut or Irish oats for our breakfast. I add 2 TB brown sugar and 1/4 cup diced fresh apple to the oatmeal as it cooks, and it sweetens all 4 of our servings nicely. I also add 1/4 cup of nuts [walnuts or pecans, usually], and 1/4 cup of dried cranberries or dates. It takes a little longer to cook these oats, but you can't beat the whole grain energy boost. I don't even need a morning snack with this, so I don't mind a few extra calories. Remember, it NEVER works to only look at calorie content. If the quantity is not satisfying, you WILL eat more, even if you wait until the next meal, you'll add it at the meal. Look for calories, yes; look for quantity, yes! But look for the best, healthiest quantity [not necessarily the most qty.] for the calories.
Edit- sorry, I had the comments sorted so the question was at the bottom. I still think you could add the same things to the instant if you like them!
JERRYCTGC 2/11/08 9:47 P
I use the old fashion Quaker oatmeal. I toast the oats first. Just add them to the pan and stir for a couple of minutes. This browns the oats and makes them taste nutty. Don't let them burn. Add the milk or water and cook slowly.
I also add wheat germ. If you want the oatmeal sweet you can add something like a small (snack size) box of raisins. Other ideas are a mashed banana, any dried fruit, chopped apples, etc.
I hate the instant packets. It taste like baby food to me and isn't filling. Now I only use the regular oatmeal. Yes it takes a few minutes longer to cook, but it taste so much better.

Chocolate Oatmeal Breakfast 1/2 cup instant oatmeal 1 envelope Fat Free Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa Mix with Calcium 1 T Peter Pan reduced fat peanut butter 1/2 - 3/4 c cup water dash of salt 1 tsp vanilla extract Combine all ingredients. And I actually used a full cup of water because it was too thick with 3/4c.

oatmeal is great but you need to eat protien as well. How about scrambling some eggbeaters and having that along side or make some egg muffins(ask me) and having one with it..also its not a bad thing that your hungry a couple hours later that is how your body works. If you start pushing your metabolism then you will be hungry every few hours..this is how i eat a.m 1/2c oatmeal w/cinn and agave and egg muffin or 2 oz homemade turkey sausage am snack 2 oz protien and 1/2 c fruit lunch 1sm baked potato or 1/2c rice 2oz protien and 1-2 cups greens or veg pm snack 2oz protien w/1c salad or 1 c greens dinner 2oz protien 1/2 c rice/potato/sweet potato or squash and 1-2c veggies eve snack protien shake or 2oz protien and 1/2 c fruit
this really works and kicks your metabolism in full gear ...keep eating small amounts and you will be good

Use the regular quick cooking oats... I start the water boiling, add the oats, stir, shut it off and let it sit. By the time I'm done getting ready, it's ready and slightly cooled. I put raisins and brown sugar in mine... cinnamon sometimes.
GIRAFFESMOM 2/9/08 7:51 P
I usually have 1 pk of instant Oatmeal, and use 1 cup of Fat free milk instead of water to cook it, dice 1/2 small apple or banana into it. You may want to try to add some protein to your breakfast, if you still arent feeling satisfied.
KRISTILYN3 2/7/08 11:37 A
To make instant oatmeal more filling I make two packets. I then feel full and my belly is happy. :0) I actually find it to be QUITE filling, especially if I eat it slow and savor the taste...
AQUAFISH 2/6/08 9:25 P
You should try buying steel cut oats. They take much longer to cook, but they are very filling. I like to add fresh cranberries and honey to mine.
PEGGYO 2/6/08 8:11 P
I like 1 to 2 teaspoons of chunky Peanut Butter and craisins. I also add some walnuts. works for a while,
DEBROSE2 2/4/08 10:34 P
I started this morning...I had a package of instant oatmeal, half an apple and 1 cup 2% milk.
Yes, I was hungry about 2 hours later...I ate the other half of the apple for a snack.
I'm not used to eating breakfast very often for the very reason that I'm hungry throughout the day. But...isn't the best way to eat to divide up into smaller portions throughout the day?
REDROSE49 2/3/08 10:44 A
I'm not sure if bran is included in the grains which make up your instant oatmeal or not. If not, I would add a tablespoon or two of that. I find it helps make regular oatmeal more 'lasting.'
SLCOLMAN 2/3/08 12:23 A
Try adding about 1/2 to 1 cup of frozen blueberries or whatever kind of berries you like to bulk it up...
DOCDRAGON 2/2/08 7:49 P
Try adding wheat germ or protein isolate. Most people are hungry due to lack of complex carbs or protein.
You can get protein isolate (comes in various types like whey and soy) at Walmart (that's where I get mine) in the health food/supplement area near the pharmacy. I am sure other pharmacies/stores carry similar products. There are a lot of different companies and flavors. Try a small bottle first to see if you like it.
I hope it helps you!
JAZZBEAR618 2/1/08 8:05 P
I usually add a tablespoon of natural Peanut Butter to my oatmeal (plus some diced apple...yummy.) I've never added PB to instant oatmeal but it might be worth a try - if you like PB, of course! I don't know what flavors of oatmeal you have, but I think the PB would taste great with the apple cinnamon or vanilla varieties.
AAANNE 1/30/08 1:11 P
When I have instant oatmeal for breakfast, I often pair it with an egg and toast (you could do egg whites or pb toast) or fruit and yogurt. The oatmeal itself is only 150-160 calories, so it's not really a full meal.
ELAINEHN 1/30/08 1:03 P
Would adding a spoonful or so of FiberSure or Benefiber to it help? The fibersupplements are tasteless and undetectable in most foods, but do help keep you full longer.
Another idea ... use the oatmeal in pancakes or muffins
My recipe originally used the Banana Bread flavored oatmeal ... but I've also made them with Apple Cinnamon and they were yummy too!
Most of the Applesauce Oatmeal muffin recipes say to use regular oats and not instant ... but I would think you could somehow adapt/modify te recipe to use the instant?!?!?
JONESMOTTELER 1/30/08 11:25 A
Early in my diet, before SparkPeople, I bought three boxes of that new Quaker instant oatmeal with the whole grains, flax, and whatnot. The stuff tastes delicious, but its not filling in the slightest! I make it with a half cup of milk and add about 5 crushed almonds and a tablespoon of dried berries, but no matter what I do I'm hungry an hour or two later and end up binging on whatever's around!
Here is my question, what can I add to the instant oatmeal (I need to use it up, not throw it away) to keep me fuller longer? Any suggestions would be appreciated and I *will* be using the regular rolled stuff once the remaining packets are gone.
