| When I cook brown rice, I add a little more water and it cooks a little longer than the regular rice.

I also cook my rice according to package directions and it always turns out fine.
I buy the Lundberg brands of mixed blends of brown and wild rice. Their directions are always thus no matter which bag of blend I buy:
1 cup rice 2 cups water or broth optional salt to taste optional butter (I usually exclude the butter)
Bring rice to boil, then reduce heat to simmer. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and simmer 50 minutes. Remove from heat, let stand covered 10 minutes more, then fluff with fork.
It always comes out perfect.

| Trader Joe's has a fully cooked brown rice which is awesome, I love it, makes life so easy, but I have often cooked brown rice, and it does come out differently from your average white or jasmine rices, it shouldn't be hard or crunchy, but substantial, and kind of nutty in flavor...

I've never had a problem either. 40 min. works. Sometimes I turn of the heat ( I use a gas stove so the heat is imediatey off) and then fluff the rice and put the lid back on while I finish off whatever else I'm cooking.
I also found brown rice where you cover the rice with water (no measuring and then you just cook as directed and drain off the excess water. I can't remember the brand name but if you look in the grocery store.

I also didn't enjoy brown rice until I found brown basmati rice. I have a rice cooker, so it's easier than boiling it. You can probably get a rice cooker for like $15 if you keep your eyes open for sales.
Good luck!

| I have always followed the cooking directions right from the package and have never had a problem cooking brown rice - even with several different brands. You should measure exactly and plan for about 40 minutes cooking time.

| I invested in a rice cooker (less than $20), I increase the cooking time by half and add half more water when cooking brown rice and it comes out fluffy and not chewy.

| Thanks for the info. I did try putting more water and cooking it longer, but really didn't like anyway. So, I'm going back to my old jasmine. For a trade-in, I have incorporated whole wheat bread and whole wheat pasta. Gotta pick your battles!

Hi,
Brown rice does take more water and will be chewier than white rice but it should not be hard. Brown jasmine rice is also available.

| I think you may find using a bit more water may solve that problem.

I feel ridiculous asking about this, but here it goes... does brown rice remain somewhat hard no matter how long you cook it? I love jasmine rice (white) and wanted to try to replace it with brown rice as part of my nutrition make-over. The only thing is, I've tried cooking brown rice a couple of times and even if I cook it a lot longer than the jasmine rice, it always comes out somewhat hard. Its very unpleasant and if that's how it is, I am definitely going back to my good old jasmine rice.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can guide me!
