If you have a whole one that is ripening pretty quickly, put it in the fridge rather than keeping it on the counter. If it's not ripe, keep it out on the counter until ripe (should be able to smell it, but it shouldn't be sickly sweet or it's overripe). I cut them in half, scoop out the seeds, then cut in quarters (strips) then I cut it from the rind and cut it into chunks and keep it in tupperware or a glass bowl covered with plastic wrap. I find that if it's cut up and ready to go I eat it. If it takes work, I don't. And it if it's all handy to eat, your dad might be inclined to have some.
If you don't think you'll eat it very quickly, cutting it in half and wrapping it like the post below is the way to go.
Good job on going for something new!

I cut them in half, and wrap them tightly with plastic wrap. They will keep quite a while that way as long as they are not over-ripe when you buy them.

hey howdy there! i got my new affinity for honeydew melons recently, but i was really wondering something. i've only had them in the store fruit trays, never messed with them myself.

i was wondering how you keep a melon from drying out or going bad before you've had a chance to really eat it. what's the best way to keep it and how should i do it? and how long can a melon keep (dad probably won't be much help on eating it, i dunno).

any help will be appreciated for sure.
