All of those are excellent answers!

Also, summer squash is harvested in the summer, winter squash in the fall / winter.

It's a little more confusing as produce now can be available year-round, but still, typically I only see a lot of summer squash around the summertime and winter squash in the fall/winter.

And about storage, yeah, the hard-exterior winter squash can last ages. I generally buy a lot of squash when it goes on sale after Halloween, have it all over the exterior of my house for fall decorations, and then bit by bit, bring it in and make something scrumptious out of it.

I often have winter squash well into spring - provided the squash doesn't get damaged or stay wet for long.

I wanted to add that winter squash will store for a long period of timeI( Ive kept squash for several months) compared to the much shorter shelf life of summer squash

Ok, I didn't realize there was more than one type of summer or winter squash. LOL I think I get it now though... Zucchini and yellow would be summer squash varieties, and butternut and acorn would be winter?? I will check out that site. Thanks a bunch.

Hi,

Here's an easy way to tell them apart.
Winter squash have thick hard skins, like pumpkin.
Summer squash have thin, easy to peel skins, like zuchinni.

This site has photos of every vegetable imaginable.
You can search on category or on vegetable.

This may seem like a dumb question but I don't know exactly what summer or winter squash is. I have always known the different squashes as zucchini, yellow, butternut, acorn, etc.... So when a recipe calls for either summer or winter squash, I have no idea which squash they are talking about. Thanks a bunch.
