Glad this was posted... good to hear of some alternatives.
Mayonaise is one thing that just scares me to make. As a virutal novice in the kitchen I've wanted to try but it scares me. :)

| I'm not sure how it would work in egg salad, but I use fat free, low-cal ranch dressing to make potato salad and pasta salad, and sometimes chicken salad. Just be careful you don't overdo it. I'm not a fan of egg salad, but I have had pasta salad in ranch dressing with some slices of hardboiled egg that was okay...

Some good alternative are:
1/2 and 1/2 yogurt, small curd cottage cheese, or light sour cream and mayo
Hummus is one of my favorites. I love it straight. Although it is not always low in fat, they are better fats than mayo
Pesto sauce can be great in somethings as well. Again, not the lowest in fat, but not all fats are equal.
If you are not carb counting, sticky rice works as an alternative as well, but with a more hit or miss success.

vegenaise and nayonaise-vegan alternatives--no cholesterol, lower fat. followyourheart.com for vegenaise. I have heard bad reviews of nayo, but vegenaise tastes like the regular stuff. My die-hard mayo fan of a dad said it's "not too bad!"--great review from him. . .

Miracle whip lite works just fine in any composed salad. The "egg/ oil" based emulsion has a basic taste, one which is universally available buy most mayo's/ salad dressing.
The difference in taste comes from the hfcs, sorbate, nitrates or other preservatives.
For less money, and more freshness try experimenting with my recipe for homemade mayo...you will be suprised at how good it can be! and how easy!

| I use miracle whip light but not sure that it would taste so good in egg salad.

I tried Nayonaise today for the first time (it's a soy based sandwich spread.)
I tried it on a sandwich with pickles and a little mustard too.
Try it in small doses before making a huge batch of egg salad with it - it has a funny texture...
Only 10 calories per tablespoon though and no fat.
HTH.

you have to be careful of dijonaise, it may contain hust as much hfcs as regular mayo!
you can make your own by adding some mustard to the mayo ingredients

| There is a sauce called dijionaise by best foods that is pretty good and low cal - check it out at hungry girl. It is 1/2 mayo 1/2 mustard, which should work for egg salad, but may not with the additional spices you incorporate.

| Yum! You had me at horseradish. Thanks for the tip!

make your own may...
add 1 whole egg yolks from two eggs 1.5 tsp spicy brown mustard
to the bowl of a food processor
whip until well mixed... to this add vegetable oil...about 8-12 ounces...slowly, in order to create an emulsion.
when stiff you now have a classic mayonnaise to which you can add lemon or lime juice, hot sauce, horseradish, minced garlic, or what ever your heart desires.
If this doesn't interest you use fat free riccotta cheese, mascarpone, or even fat free sour cream.

| 'Tis the season for egg salad, and I've been making it with only whites and plenty of extra veggies (and cilantro and curry powder, yum yum) but I've been relying on Miracle Whip Free as the 'goo' to hold it together, and it has high fructose corn syrup as it's first ingredient. Does anyone have a better option up their sleeve? I've tried plain yogurt, but it's too tangy.
