that is a great idea about weighing a pot before and after a dinner is cooked..... I make this casserole that my family loves.... I know it is a little heavy but I could never figure out how much it makes since it was a recipe built for a church outreach that my son tried and loved so it is now a family favorite...
so basically I would weigh the finished product and then weigh a cup of the same item and get a good idea ...
for example, the level cup weighs 5 oz and the whole dinner after I finish cooking weighs 100 oz or 6.25 lbs, then I have 20 servings in the whole pot.... I just have to remember to preweigh and post weigh the food and then I will be able to figure servings sizes so much easier

| little kitchen scales are great for that. you can weight the plate and "zero" it then add to food to get ounces.

I can do that with things like salads (and I think I will - thanks for the suggestion), but it doesn't work so well for more solid things that shouldn't really be broken up in advance, does it?
Thanks!

| have you tried serving [or dividing] your total recipe with a measuring cup or metered ladle?

It would be nice if you could put in that it serves six and it would tell you the serving size in ounces or cups, some kind of measurement.
Generally what I do if it doesn't tell me what the serving size is, is to weight the pan before I cook it (empty) and then weight it again after I cook it. Then I subtract the weight of the pan which leaves me with the weight of the food only. Then I take the weight of the food and divid by the number of servings. And then I have the serving size. Simple as pie.

I've seen elsewhere that people don't know what constitutes a serving when viewing recipes, and I both have that problem and have a problem figuring out what should be a serving size in my own recipes. Perhaps if there were an option to put measurements instead of servings, it would be easier? For example, for a pasta salad recipe, you could have options to calculate servings, ounces, or cups. That would help me a TON.
Thanks!
