I actually don't use the food plans listed on sparks pages but plan my own meals based on what's available at the market and within budget. I generally use only fresh fruits and veggies that are in season. Until recently we had raspberries available for less than a dollar a pound. I've never eaten so many raspberries in my life but they are good for you. When they cost $3.99/half pint I would not even consider buying them.

Good luck!

Allmost all foods have a food lable on them by law.To use the SparkPeople food chart click add new foods, click on a area on the top, right of the box entitled foods not listed.Enter each item you use and when you make a recipe use the favorite recipe box find your recipe item, click on the serving or change it by decimal or whatever measure is offered and it will calculate the informaton of the total recipe portions entered for you and make a running total of all 3 meals as you add recipie ingredients or snack items like a apple or a beer..lol,just kidding. :) There also is a place for groups of recipes that you will use again and again using the same ingredients, like tuna salad and those ingredients and it will calculate portions.
Now to my knowledge,I'm new also,I haven't found a area where cost is calculated but you know whatever ingredients your using are at the best cost you could find and the cost is not important.I'm sure not only going to have 1/2 a tunafish sandwhitch because I couldn't find a bargan on the tuna,or the price of lite mayo went up so I'll only use 2 tbl. instead of 4 like I used to use.Ya got to draw a economic line somewhere.
I wish you the best and good cookin...Chef Jim

Food cost across the country varies widely. You have to look into your local stores and see where it is cheaper to purchase what you need. Don't forget to visit the mom and pop corner stores. I buy my meat, fruits, and vegetables at these smaller markets because I can get more for less, than at the box stores.

I am new here, so I don't know my way around very well yet. I like the meal plans that are offered here, but is there a way to adjust them for a certain budget (i.e. the meal plans get adjusted automatically so I don't have to go through it and figure out how to make changes)? Or at least get an estimate how much those meals will cost me? I know that food costs are very different across the country, but still... Or do you know of a site that does both - plans meals and accounts for the cost? Thank you.
