I would stock the pantry with a couple low sodium red sauces. Have whole grain pasta,s on hand and cook the whole box.Put some in individule zip locks, they keep real well and you only have to heat them up with a toppiing or two or three or Ya got it..lol.For left over spagetti, put a handfull in a medium hot, pam sprayed, pan.Cover this with half cup egg-beaters seasoned with cinnamon and vanilla.Let the egg just abut set and flop it over for a minute and you have a spagetti french toast, dust with a little powdered sugar.Should you need to use real egg,use 2 eggwhites and 1 whole egg,or 4 eggwhites.Portion is the key to most recipies including fruits and vegies which should always be on hand to eat raw or nuked.I can't beliieve its not butter spray is a good addition along with lemon juice.
I'll let you digest this for awhile, pun intended, and check your post later to see what these fine folks want to share with you.By the way,You can borrow cookbooks from the library and I suggest The Joy of Cooking for the best tried and true recipies. If you want a delicious vegetartian recipe try any Moosewood cook book by Mollie Katzen.
Good cookin...Chef JimI forgot to mention one of the most important items in any diet.Fiber should be eaten several times a day through products like whole wheat bread, low sodium triscets, whole grain crackers,Grahm crackers.Cornmeal is a whole grain product and muffins are perfecty acceptable.Corn griddle cakes are great, whole wheat cakes are nasty in my opinion..lol.
SparkPeople has some great recipies so check it out.
By for now.Peace be with you.

Until you get used to what you will need, try planning a general menu before shopping. It doesn't need to be exact, but do make sure you have a use in the coming week for what you buy.

Maybe take some time to go through the recipe portion of this site and see what appeals to you.

Start by planning your snacks and meals ahead of time when you are at home by yourself. Include a little protein and or fiber at each snack and meal so you 1. will fill up quicker 2. be satisfied longer 3. you won't reach for the bad stuff
When you are working, fill up on the healthier choices of protein fruits and veggies first. Think turkey, ham, grilled chicken, nuts, for protein and leave the starches out as much as possible.
Good luck!

So heres my deal. I'm 22, single, living on my own. I was never really taught how to grocery shop so when i do., i usually don't end up eating what i've bought. I don't know how to cook very much any how.

4 days a week i eat pretty healthy with the 2 kids that i nanny for. I eat what they eat. Cute little balanced meals with a protien, a starch, fruits and veggies.

I'm wondering if anyone has any great suggestions on how how should either shop or even simple recipe ideas. My eating habits are probably the cause of my extra weight that i'm trying to shed.

Any help is appriciated
