The terms and conditions are there so no one gets in trouble for copyright or whatever. A bit ridiculous to me.

If everyone followed it, we wouldnt have half the recipes found on sparkrecipes. There are many "different" recipes that are essentially the same thing. Maybe the ingredients are a tiny bit different or the cooking time varies.

If everyone only submitted "original" recipes we would have 1 chicken parm, 1 meatloaf, etc because they all came from the same idea.

Barely any recipes are "originals".

So I say, go ahead and share away!

Thing is, you can call any recipe your own and noone will ever know and especially with how most of us 'lighten' up recipes, they actually do become our own.

I understand the don't copy verbatim but I would not take it too literally and as long as you put your own little spin to it, should be fine in my opinion :)

Thank you. I never saw that. Guess I need to go in my recipe box and unshare my recipes.

Sorry, I found that by going to Sparkrecipes, and clicking on recipe calculator. At the very bottom of the page is a mini disclaimer thingy with a link to the page I just gave. The terms we agree to when we submit a recipe.

By the way, I didn't take it as being rude. Ya just didn't know, so no worries.

SP recipe terms and conditions....

http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe_sharing_terms.asp

"By submitting your recipe to SparkRecipes, you are agreeing with all of the following conditions:
This is your own original recipe. It was not copied from any other source, including (but not limited to) a friend, cookbook, website, newsletter, booklet, or any copyrighted source online, in print, or on film......"

My apologies. I thought it was ok to share recipes given to us by friends and/or family. I guess its not.

Where does it state that we are only to use our own recipes, not those we found and enjoyed from elsewhere? I have yet to see that anywhere.

I'm not being rude, just requesting that the rules be shown to me from the website.

Mamabear,

The thing is that we are not supposed to submit recipes that come from books, web sites, or any other copywritten place. We are supposed to submit our own creations, something handed down or given to us by a friend. That kinda thing. The idea is that the creator, or submitter is supposed to figure out the serving size for everone or not submit it. Thats my thought anyway. Thats not whats been happening though. I, for one, will not use a recipe if it doesn't have a serving size.

"I am just asking that y'all create another box that says serving size, and if it doesn't get filled in, the recipe doesn't get saved cuz its incomplete. Its not that hard"

Unfortunately some of the places we get the recipes from doesn't state how big a serving size is. Not all cookbooks or recipes cards tell us how big one serving is. I understand that dividing it up so you get the right serving size is important, but how are those who enter the information supposed to know when the recipe doesn't state that information?

It would be nice if the serving size was listed as either oz, cups etc. That way you could make sure you are measuring it out correctly. Without an exact measurement my portions tend to get bigger and bigger.

I'd love to see serving sizes, too. For me the issue is whether or not I actually try a recipe if I don't know what the serving size is. I think there's a huge difference in knowing if a recipe makes 4 servings that are each 1 1/2 cups in size vs. 4 servings that are 3/4 cup in size. It's easy to figure out an item that is baked or made in a 9X13 pan that makes 24 servings or as stated earlier, a recipe with 4 chicken breasts that has 4 servings. However, a casserole or soup or anything for that matter that doesn't specify the size baking pan or that you have to guess on the size serving, just doesn't get used in my house. I'm probably missing out on some great stuff, but if I don't know how big the servings are they have to be really, really special for me to even try them. Just my 2 cents worth...Jeannie

I've submitted recipes but for the life of me I couldn't work out what my serving size was/were (except to put in number of servings per recipe) cause every recipe when I dish it up I eye ball the amounts and I guess there are times when someone might get more sultanas or pine nuts in one serve than someone else!! I think I'd go totally crazy if I had to get exact to the rice grain how much was in each serving..............I'm losing weight without the total to the minute part of a cup measurement that some people want put into recipes. Maybe a bigger ladle/serving spoon to divide a pot of chili between 4 people to make it quicker might work?

Honestly, I don't have an issue with having an extra serving left over. And your skewers would be pretty easy to eye ball and see if it was equal. My issue is with the recipes that are more difficult. The soups and stews, chili and things that ya have to put a spoonful at a time in each bowl just to get it equal. Thats my issue with the whole thing. If there is any left over, my son will no doubt devour it, as he is a bottomless pit. They may say that you need to put the serving size, but I have yet to see one single recipe that actually has one. I would love to be wrong.

I guess in my case, I can't win for losing.... because I COULD say that each individual serving is "about 3 skewers" but who knows what length of a skewer person A is going to have versus person B, and how person A loads the skewer (loose with space in between the veggies and chicken) versus how person B loads a skewer (tight and all the veggies and chicken touching) know what I mean?

It happened in my own house two nights ago - I ended up splitting the chicken and veggies in 4 servings... my son and husband each took their 1/4, and I took my 1/4, and I put the other 1/4 of the recipe in a baggie for lunch another day.

We made our skewers and I ended up with 3, while the boys ended up with 2 each! They loaded a whole bunch onto their skewers, while I loaded mine up a little looser. I guess I don't know how I can turn my particular recipe into a 3-serving recipe basically because it's not, it's a 4-person recipe.

I don't agree with what DJHEILMANN has to say - that we should ding people on a rating of a recipe, based on whether or not they've made a recipe that tailored itself to someone else's individual household. Many recipes out there are for 6-8 servings. Mine was for 4, and I would hate to be rated lower because someone only wanted a 3-serving recipe and had to do math (no offense - though believe me, Math is not my friend either). When I have a tough math question *especially a word problem* I just ask my husband to figure it out for me - or what sometimes really is shameful, I ask my 14yr old son - talk about OUCH! :)

So I am not sure what the solution is here. I know for a fact, when you submit a recipe, you are supposed to put in the number of servings the recipe will serve. As far as further breaking that down, I have no idea if Sparkpeople would have the programming capability to do that.

In the case of my particular recipe, it would be fairly easy to figure out - instead of 1 onion, and 1 each of the peppers, you'd use 3/4 of the onion, and only 3/4 of each pepper. Instead of 1.75 pounds of chicken, you'd use 1.3 pounds of chicken. (1.75 divided by 4 = .43 x 3 = 1.3) Then you'd have a 3-serving recipe.

But I can see where it would get difficult with something like a soup, chili or something in a cup/bowl. The recipe submitter probably should indicate whether the serving is one cup, 2 cups - whatever.

I recently had a question about a recipe.... and I sent a spark mail right to the recipe submitter. The response came back the next day, and I believe she then edited her recipe!! She had no idea she forgot to say the method of measure for one of the ingredients. It said something like "1.5 Lowfat yogurt" but was meant to say "1.5 CUPS Lowfat Yogurt" - so sometimes it's a simple typo that makes a recipe submitter error.

Anyway.... I hope there is a resolution somehow for you, to the issue.

Actually, the reason I posted this thread was because there is NO SERVING SIZE on the recipes. If it just says "4 servings" we are left to guess how much to put in each bowl. In my case, there are only 3 of us living in our home, so dividing a pot of chili into 4 bowls is silly, but....I have to do it if I wanna eat the correct amount. If there was a spot where we HAD to enter the size of each serving...that would make things easier. I am glad that we have the recipe section, but leaving it up to everyone to enter that little bit of extra information isn't working. I am just asking that y'all create another box that says serving size, and if it doesn't get filled in, the recipe doesn't get saved cuz its incomplete. Its not that hard. A simple matter of a little HTML. Thanks.

So if it reads like this, I guess I did it "right" ???

Ingredients

1 Large Red Onion
1 Green Bell pepper
1 Red Bell Pepper
1 Yellow Bell Pepper
1.75 Pounds Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts
1 Tbsp. Teriyaki sauce ( About 1/2 Tbsp per Shishkabob)
Bamboo Skewers

Directions
Cut all the peppers, onion and chicken into 1-2 inch squares.
Arrange the veggies and the chicken onto the bamboo skewers in the order you would like them.
Add any spices you might like.
Cook on the grill until the chicken is done - about 7-15 minutes.
While cooking on the grill, spray or sprinkle with Teriyaki sauce!

Each recipes should say the number of servings it makes. The nutritional information is for one serving.

Does the Sparkrecipes website assume that servings are all one cup (for, say a chili)? Like when it tells you the calories and stuff for each servings, what is the size of serving they are considering? My serving size may be smaller or bigger, you know?
Thanks so much

Near the cooking instructions box it says:

Please make sure to include the serving size, for example "makes 24 2 inch pieces" or "makes 8 1-cup servings."

So you should put details on the serving size in the cooking instructions box.

OK, I just submitted a recipe to Spark recipes (Chicken Teriyaki Shishkabobs) and nowhere did it show me where to add serving size while I was putting the foods into the calculator..... only thing it asked for was how many servings were in the ENTIRE recipe! If I would have put 1 serving - then instead of 254 calories, it would have been a 1016 calorie recipe because the program would have thought ONE PERSON was actually supposed to eat the whole recipe.

Thanks for the note! We encourage members to add this, but not everyone does. Feel free to rate a recipe lower if you feel not having a serving size makes it not as useful as a healthy recipe.

Serving sizes would be great. I gets to be a pain to have to divide everything one spoonful at a time into bowls until distributed evenly.

Ok, I love the recipes on SP. I really do. But....I have an issue with them too. It always says how many servings the recipe makes, but never the serving size. Its not an issue when the recipe is for ...say....chicken. Ok, you have pieces of chicken...four servings...one piece of chicken per serving. Right? But what about that pot of chili or soup? I am a mathmatical dunce. It hurts my head to add up all the ingredients and divide. LOL! Please, please, please...can ya add a serving size to all recipes? Thanks.
