I like to add bananas to my smoothies. One good trick is to peel and freeze the bananas in snack size baggies. Then when you need one, it is ready to go!!

| Oh, I forgot to mention I cut it all up the night before and freeze it (Minus the soy milk which gets added in the morning), it's MUCH creamier frozen.

I have a smoothy every morning for breakfast, it is quick and easy and keeps me full for hours. I use
1 banana 1/2 cup of berries (strawberry or raspberry, or blueberry) 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk (high in calcium, low in sugar) 1 Tbs. Groung Flax (they add a good amount of fiber)
it's under 200 calories and makes for a great meal, especially in the summer!

About tofu (I use the silken kind, obviously), how much do you use for one serving?
I've been experimenting with it for the past few weeks and I just can't seem to get it right.
Also, does anyone have any good recipes using silken tofu? I just bought a bunch and I have no idea what to do with it). Thanks so much!

| Add tofu for better health. It is totally tasteless.

I love smoothies - but I do try and watch the calorie content as some are very high.
One of my favorite came from the Dannon Light & Fit Vanilla yogurt containers.
1 cup vanilla yogurt (sugar-free kind) 1/2 cup cut-up fruit 1/2 cup juice 1/2 cup ice cubes
This one runs about 200 calories, but it is a big, filling serving.
Another favorite of mine to incorporate calcium and protein into my diet --
1 cup vanilla sugar-free yogurt 1/2 cup Light Plain soy milk 1/2 or 1 whole medium banana 1 Tbl. sugar-free Swiss Miss cocoa powder ice cubes
This one has 240 with a whole banana or 190 with only half of the banana.

Smoothie recipes - here is one I love - if you like Root beer freezes -
use a vanilla yogurt - or milk vanilla flavoring (1/2 capfull-to taste) diet A&W root beer (instead of water) blend to desired thickness with ice
I have lots more if you want to email me for them - many without strawberries.

Carolyn: I make smoothies for the kids all the time. I use the same standard recipe and I think you will enjoy.
1 c. plain non-fat yogurt 1 c. frozen fruit 1/2 banana 1 c. fruit juice of choice blend on high until "smooth"
In the frozen food section you can find all kinds of fruit from mangos, melon, kiwi, tropical mixtures, berries other than strawberry etc. I try and coordinate the juice I select with the fruit I use. I usually use apple juice with the berry recipes and either orange or pineapple juice for just about everything else.

Well, splenda or no splenda, yogurt or orange juice, what really matters is being a community and supporting eachother. I think it's great that we are both taking control of our health.

HealthyRed, No problem but I think I prefer OJ over milk actually I have not made many smoothies made one this mourning with OJ 1/2-cup in it and that 1/2 cup should not be a calorie problem maybe raises insulin a little but I really dont care. I care about calories and this recipe was on Sparks so I tried it. Yes yogurt I used also and it is in most smoothies recipes. We all have our own styles of what we eat, use in condiments, sweetners or no sweetners. Im aware of sweetner issues but I use Splenda regardless it never has effected me in health and I cant live without it need something in coffee and treats. Anyways you seem to know alot due to your profession but people will tend to use what works for them and what they like to use so you really cant convince them to change their habbits and likes just accept they like what they like. I know your looking out for us but understand we all have differnt options on food.

I can see that if you use yogurt and milk as the liquid, not juice, it would be much less of a sugar crash issue.
I wish I hadn't sounded so preachy in the last post.

HealthyRed,
Everyone has a differnt option on every ingredient my take on this if you lose while using the product then it works. I usually use yogurt and Milk that is Why! I stated that in previous posts and these are better option because everyone needs more calcium in their diets and I also heard milk helps shed pounds. Also if you use low-sugar juices it is a better option and I also have a recipe for no juice smoothie and it is good also. Diva2be

Smoothies are yummy, but....I have read that eating the fruit plain is better than having fruit completely juiced when you are trying to lose weight.

It digests more slowly that way, so you don't spike your blood sugar as much. Spiking your blood sugar creates an emotional rush and then a low when all of the sugar leaves your system. Having a low could lead you to eat more, or drink coffee, unneccessarily. If you have bigger pieces in your stomach, the sugar is released into your bloodstream evenly over a long time, as it gets digested.
That being said, everyone has a different reaction to sugar; I have one friend who is so sensitive, sugar is like a drug to her, and some may not be affected one way or another.

Hiya Joyceann, That sounds really nutritious and yummy - but I wouldn't call it milk-free - yogurt is made out of milk! :)
I think some people like their smoothies to be less thick, in which case, they might add milk or milk-substitute, or even water to thin it out a little.
Cheers!

|
|
|
| ya they pretty much are non fool proof, and they are good !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i like the watermelon and yougirt and squzze the juices in there
|
|
|
|
| JOYCEANN2- I pretty much use your approach to smoothies too. Make them once a day or so... I also add a scoop of vanilla flavored whey protein from the health food store. This makes a complete meal and at the same time satisfies my desire for a sweet treat.

i see alot of people make their smoothies and put milk or soy mild in it and flavored yogurts, im really not good at calculating calories, but when i make mine for 2 servings i use 1 bananna, 6 chuncks of fresh pineapple cut up, and what ever i have on hand like handfull of fresh straberries or a hand full of fresh blueberries no mile at all, and just 3/4 cup of fat free plain yougurt ,,,maybe im wrong but i think thats very non fattening,,,all fresh and no milk??????????
