I have reported lots of recipes for missing ingredients and direction but I have now way of knowing whether they have been removed. That is ok with me, it is just good to know that they get removed.

Hi Denise,
I went back and looked at the most recent 3 recipes I reported that were missing ingredients and/or instructions. 1 of the 3 was removed, the other 2 were not. I went ahead and reported them again, as perhaps they didnt get to you for some reason. After a few days, I will look again to see if they are gone.

I also looked at another 3 recipes I had reported a long time ago for having either incomplete ingredients, outright nutritional errors, or being so high in fat/saturated fat that they cant be healthy, no matter what a person's dietary needs are. All 3 of those recipes are still up.

Usually I dont report recipes I consider unhealthy, as each person can decide for themself what is or is not acceptable in their diet. I have only done that once, when I saw a recipe that had 357 calories and 27 grams of fat(mostly saturated) in a one cup serving.

As I said earlier, I appreciate that Spark recipes is available as a tool to me and I appreciate the people behind the scenes who make it happen and manage it. Just giving my opinion/feedback to make it even better than it already is.

Shambree, I actually receive the reports for the recipes and definitely remove the recipes with no ingredients or instructions. However, it may take up to 24 hours for it to actually be removed from the site.

Are you seeing them after 24 hours has gone by?

You can save a recipe without commenting on it if you place it in your own private cookbook, I believe. I have done this for many recipes that I have yet to try and they are all still there. I have also marked them as "favorites" on my Spark Page and in My Recipe Box with no problems. Of course, printing them would always assure you had it, even if they were to be pulled from the site later.

As far as I can see, recipes are not often removed from the site. I have reported several that have absolutely no ingredients and/or instructions( more than once) and they are still up.

That being said, I have made some really good healthy meals from SparkRecipes, and I do appreciate having it as a resource on the website, "quirks" and all.

Jewel,
If you don't want the recipe to "by chance" be removed then do not add it as a shared recipe. That way it is always available to you and you can still put it in a cookbook or in your food tracker.

To others,
BTW, on several other forums there has been a lot of discussion on not adding spices to the recipe ingredients for the nutritional calculations because they have not calories. I checked several spices in the recipe calculator using the preset limits and they all had calories, carbs and sodium and should not be left out of the nutritional calculations. If, a person doesn't want to include spices in the recipe calcultor then they should not share the recipe.

I agree with you about support and I don't believe it is necessary to be hateful or snotty. If you are going to comment you should keep it germane, but I feel you should be able to point out an error or an inconsistancy.

Believe me I have already came up against the "avatar nazis" I see no reason to be nasty about anything.

I think the "clean up" of the recipes area needs to begin with making comments on each recipe. My reason being the stupid and sometimes hateful comments made by people who haven't made the recipe, have no other desire than to see their words in print and/or are "food nazis" who want nothing more than what they deem appropriate posted.

Each of us here have different needs, different goals etc......and to state a recipe has no merit may be applicable to the person making the comment, but it may be appropriate for others....and the blatant snottiness in some of the comments is far from supportive, support being something we are each here for in one way or another.

I have posted a couple of the "meaningless" comments listed below, simply because I have seen recipes "disappear" never to be found again. By posting a comment and not making it at that time, you allow the recipe to be listed as being reviewed by you, under your name, thus able to be retrieved at any time. The comments and resulting points can be taken away if the recipe is rubbish

Loique - Unfortunately we cannot allow copyrighted recipes to be shared. You can enter them in for yourself so they are in your recipe box if you would like, but they are not to be in the shared database.

When you submit your recipe, there is a section at the bottom of the page (just above the submit button) with some info on that. One of the notes listed there is that you are "Acknowledging that you did not copy the recipe from a book, website, or other copyrighted source."

Not sure where to ask this question.. I have a few excellent low fat, lower calorie recipes that came from various places.. they are NOT my own creation... I am just not sure whether it is legal to post them here. Does anyone have an answer. I don't mind giving credit.. but I am afraid I don't even know where some of them came from.. thanks for any light you might be able to shed on this subject...

If starting a team for that appeals to you then jump on it. I am not sure I would be interested in joining. I already report lots of recipes as inappropriate due to missing ingredients or directions. It is frustrating to see a title that sound delish only to be disappointed.

You would need to tread very lightly when it comes to reporting recipes that you consider too salty or too high in fat as inappropriate. There are just too many different dietary needs.

I do feel that there should be a different approach to rating recipes or to delete what some comments say. I have see some that point to bad grammar which has nothing to do with the food. I had someone comment on one of my recipe that I thought was kind of off humor (referring to a persons body parts) because it was a muffin.

Starting a team for this purpose won't do anything to rectify the problems with the recipe area. There are bizarre, unhealthy recipes there. Strange or no directions. And my personal peeve, also: do NOT comment on the recipe until you have made it! I use a lot of on line recipe sources, and I definitely use ratings to help decide if and how I am going to make a recipe. Meaningless comments such as "sounds yummy", "think I'll try this", etc. belong somewhere else, not with the recipe and thus affecting the overall rating. Please, SparkPeople, modify and improve this aspect of the site! It is just not up to the overall quality here!

If you want to start a team for that, that's fine.

I love this idea!! I also wish people would stop commenting on recipes they haven't made....example: that sounds good, or can't wait to try this.... only comment on a recipe if you make it people!!!!

I am willing to patrol if this gets going, count me in!

I had posted on another thread that I was willing to start an SP Team to "patrol" the recipes, if given permission. The volunteers would check recipes for errors and use the "inappropriate recipe" button to flag any that needed further SP review.

I never received a response to that post, so I am making this its own thread.

I understand that SP does not have the time, nor the staff to police all of the recipes. However, your database is being watered down (and thus less useful) by all of the recipes without directions, amounts, extremely high fat/sodium, wrong category, several typographical errors, etc. SparkRecipe's value will continue to go down unless something is done to protect and improve the integrity of the database.

I think there are probably others out there, like myself, who browse the recipes once every day or so. It would be easy for us to monitor the recipes we view as we do this. Of course we can do it informally, without an SP Team, but then we would most likely duplicate our efforts. Whereas with an SP Team, we could (informally) assign categories for everyone to watch and report our efforts.

Please let me know what you think of this idea.
