Mike (Macirondude) : Success Story

What prompted the change

Mike was tired of hearing comments from friends and family about his weight and hated how the extra weight was making him feel. He was worn down and tired, and the excess weight prevented him from doing things he wanted to do, and limited what he was able to do as well. He was also having problems with acid reflux and headaches that he attributed to his current health status.

Conquering strategy

Mike started by tracking his food and exercise regularly. He quickly learned that he was taking in many more calories than he needed, and he was very out of shape. Since starting to exercise, his fitness level has improved dramatically. He has progressed from walking to jogging. He now mountain bikes and takes stationary cycling classes, making sure he works out three to five days a week. His friends often say that he's unstoppable now and full of energy!

One of Mike's bad habits was late night snacking. Typically, he'd eat a bag of potato chips and a soda, but has replaced the chips with healthier snacks. That way he can still satisfy his urge to snack but doesn't have to ruin his calorie budget for the day.

How SparkPeople helped

"SparkPeople gave me all of the resources I needed to reach my goals," says Mike. He recorded all of his food in the Nutrition Tracker, being sure to stay in his recommended calorie range most of the time. Mike also used the fitness tracker to record his workouts and make sure he was on target with his calories burned goal.

Mike also joined the "Rookie Running" SparkTeam, which he says helped him in so many ways. "The support from those people has been such a positive influence on me, and hearing their stories and successes kept me motivated," he says. He also used the Message Boards to ask questions, celebrate his successes and meet others who were going through similar experiences.

Noticable Improvements

In addition to the weight loss, Mike no longer gets headaches or acid reflux. He has more energy, a positive attitude and an overall feeling of being healthy.

Mike's advice to new members is to focus on what you want to accomplish and dedicate yourself to your goals. Start with small goals and work from there. "Always believe in yourself and in what SparkPeople has to offer you. I did, and it got me to where I am today," he says.

These muffins are very filling!

The whole wheat flour makes for a dense muffin, which I like. You only need to eat one! If you want a lighter muffin try using whole wheat pastry flour, which is more finely ground and available in the bulk bins at larger grocery stores.
