Sundar (Nagaras) : Success Story

What prompted the change

A routine visit to the doctor showed that Sundar had high cholesterol and tryglyceride levels. He was not feeling good about his appearance, and knew he needed a change. Sundar also didn't have the energy to do the things he wanted to and was short-tempered all the time. He felt this was all related to the extra weight.

Conquering strategy

Sundar learned the importance of portion control. Instead of eating everything in sight, he's no longer the "garbage disposal for leftovers" that he once was. Sundar also started eating more fruits and vegetables and worked on staying within his recommended calorie and nutrient ranges on a regular basis. Now he makes sure to drink enough water and eat breakfast every morning—two things he never did before. Sundar also packs his lunch on a regular basis instead of dining out.

He also started exercising regularly and has noticed a big improvement in his fitness level. In the beginning, he would take frequent rest breaks during his cardio workouts. Since then he has improved his speed and only takes a few short breaks to catch his breath during the workout.

How SparkPeople helped

Sundar took advantage of the nutrition and fitness articles on the site, especially those that encouraged him to view this as a lifestyle change and not just a diet. He also used the Healthy Lifestyle Scale and SparkPoints as tools for personal motivation and friendly competition. Sundar used the tracking tools to make sure was headed in the right direction. "I love the reports. I am a visual person and the graphs were great at keeping me motivated," he says.

Sundar also learned from SparkPeople that healthy living and weight loss are not all-or-nothing concepts. He has learned that there are going to be ups and downs, so it's important to be patient. "All great journeys begin with small steps and the Fast Break stage is a great way to get started," says Sundar.

Noticable Improvements

Since losing the weight Sundar has seen his blood pressure drop 20 points. His cholesterol and tryglyceride levels also decreased, and he is ecstatic that he could do it all without medications.

In addition, Sundar is wearing smaller sizes and now has the energy to do all of the things he couldn't do before!

These muffins are very filling!

The whole wheat flour makes for a dense muffin, which I like. You only need to eat one! If you want a lighter muffin try using whole wheat pastry flour, which is more finely ground and available in the bulk bins at larger grocery stores.
