The winner is: HITEKFRED! You might have tried massage, but have you tried acupressure? Acupressure delivers therapeutic pressure as a way to stimulate discrete points on the body or relieve pain or tension.

I recently started seeing acupressure mats advertised on yoga websites, and I was intrigued. There, they were touted for as meditation aids. Soon after, the Vila team reached out and asked us to try one of their mats.

Now we're giving away one of their acupressure mats (a $40 value). In addition to the mat, Vila is also offering a 25% off promotional code (enter code SPARK at checkout).

Get the details!

They say: Vila, Swedish for rest and relaxation, launches its first line of acupressure mats for 2011. Lying on the Vila Mat increases blood circulation, decreases muscle tension, relieves pain and boosts energy.

The 2’ by 3’ Vila Mat combines the benefits of ancient acupressure with a simple and compact design. Crown-shaped plastic spikes function as mini acupressure points. When laid upon, contact pressure between the spikes and the body stimulates blood circulation, providing the body with more oxygen for healing muscles and organs. Pain signals are simultaneously sent to the brain that release endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller, alleviating muscle tension. Vila Mats offer instant relief and energy on-the-go, but with minimal effort – just let the crowns work for you!

We say: We were a bit nervous to lie on the Vila mat. With bare skin, the crowns felt like thorns, but when you lie on it while wearing a layer of clothing (a T-shirt, for example), it feels like tiny fingernails poking your back, in a good way. If you like to have your back scratched, you'll like this mat. After a few minutes of feeling the pressure and sharper points (a great lesson to breathe!), that feeling gives way to warmth.

It felt great on the back, but we experimented with other parts of the body: knees, shins, hamstrings. BAD idea. Stick with the back, and you'll love it. If you're ticklish, this might not be for you. (Check with your doc before using if you have circulation issues or other health issues.)

I get acupuncture from my doctor - I love it! I would be skeptacle to try acupuncture in any other way because I think it's important where each point comes in contact with your body. - 3/21/2011   11:42:53 AM

I've BEEN wanting to try accupuncture; however, there are no practitioners in my area. I would have to travel an hour and a half, and don't know anyone who could even recommend a good one! - 3/21/2011   10:14:24 AM

I've long thought it would be nice to have something like this. I actually looked at some of these types of mats a few weeks ago, not sure if it was the Vila brand or not. I wondered if putting this on the bed and laying on it might make it easier to do the work since my rear end sticks out so much that it's hard to sleep on my back otherwise. But for a few minutes this could feel good. I'm always begging for a deeper massage when my son or my husband are rubbing my back and they tell me they can't push in any harder. I do accupressure on some of the "trigger points" that I can actually reach like on my hands or my arms etc. but that middle part of my back is sorely lacking!!! I really could use something like this, I'm sure! - 3/20/2011   2:45:37 PM

I have a book called ACUPRESSURE'S POTENT POINTS which explains how to apply pressure to different parts of your body in order to relieve tension. It feels really good, especially when I've forgotten to do it for a while and have an intense session! - 3/19/2011   8:14:19 PM

I love acupuncture I had a leg issue from a back surgery. For over 5 years I had little control of my left leg. I went to the practitioner because he is an MD and I went for back pain. After the first session I felt great. I left the office with DH and when i got home and took off my snow boots. I just lifted up my leg and slid the foot in to my slipper, It occured to me I had perfect control over my foot. I yelled for DH to come and watch this, I had taken off te slipper and as I pointed down he looked very confused. I lifted up my leg and put on the slipper again, He was delighted at what he saw and he grabbed and hugged me. It was an amazing experience, Now we are on Medicare they do not pay for this amazing treatment so I cannot afford to go often but other than that I would go much more frequently. In the meantime Medicare will pay for costly drugs and interventions. It makes no sense. I feel sure it would save the system money.Acupuncture ---YES!!

I am not sure about the mat I am diabetic and unsure I would be able to use it. - 3/19/2011   8:43:08 AM

I actually have an acupressure mat... And would LOVE to have another for traveling. Those of you who might be skeptical, I promise, it's a joy. After lying on it (I do it on bare skin, otherwise I don't think you get quite the same benefit) for 20-40 minutes, I have experienced better sleep, felt far more relaxed and warm! I can't yet speak to any long-term positive affects, but I plan on finding out! - 3/19/2011   7:41:05 AM

I have tried both acupressure and acupuncture and swear by it. My first was acupressure. I have achilles tendonitis and was told by doctors to just ice it down and stretch when it acts up (which is quite often). I felt relief from the pain almost immediately after having the "seed" placed in my ear at the pressure point. I had acupuncture for headaches and neck strain. After having the needles placed in their place (no, they don't hurt-you hardly feel anything) I was laying on a table with a sun lamp on my back (needles were placed in my neck down the spine) and left in the room with relaxation music playing. I was a bit upset when my 30 min was up. You become so relax, I could of fell asleep. After the needles were removed, he massaged biofreeze on my neck and back. I also had acupuncture done for my plantar fasciitis. LOVED IT. Would recommend it. - 3/18/2011   8:28:02 PM
