Contest Closed: Win a Case of Coconut Water from VitaCoco

Staying hydrated in the summertime can be a challenge, and while water is tops in our book, sometimes (like after hours in the sun or long workouts) you need more than water. Many of us reach for a sports drink to quench our thirst and replenish our electrolytes, which are lost when we sweat.

We first reviewed coconut water in 2009
. Then, I could only find it at health-food stores and many readers said they hadn’t tried it. Now, just two years later, we see it talked about on blogs, Message Boards and the like, and it’s available everywhere from mainstream supermarkets to yoga studios.

We’re thrilled to be hosting a giveaway with VitaCoco, which offers five varieties of coconut water: original, peach & mango, pineapple, tangerine and acai & pom.
They’re giving away a case of coconut water to five lucky readers. They also gifted us with a few cases earlier this summer. Boy, did they hit the spot.

For those of you who have tried coconut water but not liked it, consider trying a flavored variety. Coconut water has a not-so-sweet, almost salty taste that’s not overly “coconutty.” As a self-proclaimed coconut water expert, I recommend trying the pineapple, peach and mango or tangerine varieties from VitaCoco. (I like them all, really! Pineapple is my favorite and was a hit at the office. We didn’t really like the acai variety—not enough coconut flavor.)

Fresh from the coconut is best!
I've loved drinking fresh coconut water since I was a child but these are okay too. My 2 year old loves coconut water from either source! - 8/1/2011   6:49:19 PM

I soooo hope I win. I never win these contests, but I looove coconut water. It's just a little pricey to drink as often as I would like. My 3yr old grandaughter Hannah, had to think of a recipe for for preschool class. her was, Coconut Juice. Squeeze coconuts into a cup. Then pour it into a can. Then my Nana buys it to drink. Precious! - 8/1/2011   10:40:50 AM

I wish that I could win too but being from Canada doesn't allow us to enter the contest. I love coconut water :) and drink it all the time when I cycle. - 7/31/2011   9:14:35 PM

Most of the times, coconut water when you don't have it "straight from the nut", often has a different taste. Thank God, I live where coconut is plentiful so I drink a lot of the water and cook with a lot of the juice and flakes.
Each week I purchase approximately 1gallon and love it when it is chilled. - 7/31/2011   9:53:42 AM
    I love this stuff.....and would love to win a case, who wouldn't... - 7/31/2011   7:24:24 AM

Except for my morning cup of coffee, I drink regular water almost exclusively. I'd like something other than water to drink after working out and want it to be coconut water, but I HATE HATE HATE coconuts, and wonder if I'm crazy to hope coconut water doesn't taste like coconut......please be nice when you call me a fool for hoping. Let me know and thanks! DC - 7/30/2011   11:33:20 PM

I love coconut water regardless of the brand... I first started seeing it locally about 10 years ago in the various Asian markets we have in town, and later the Hispanic markets. Now the health food stores carry them and the larger grocery stores in town. I think it's funny and sad that the local grocery store carries the big tall cans of coconut water with some of the pulp in it for like $1.99 or $2.50 but the same size and style of coconut water with a different "brand"/language font (it's mostly in some Asian, I think maybe Malaysian the particular brand, or maybe Thailand?) at the Asian market I can buy - tastes exactly the same - but in case it works out to about .85 cents a can!! I have a feeling that the "foreign" one prepared the coconut for the "American Brand" - just re-branded it, or made it to their specifications, as they were both exported by a vendor in Thailand. So don't choke on the price if you see it in your local (American style) store - look around online or your phone book or ask around to see if there isn't an Asian or Hispanic or even Middle Eastern/Mediterranean market in your community...chances are you can find a wider selection of coconut water options and prices. - 7/30/2011   11:22:05 PM

It's healthy. I seldom get it, simply because I drink water and tea and just don't think of it.

My usual cooling beverage? I make green flavored tea, add one packet Splenda per 2 qt pan, then cool it in the rifrigerator overnight, serving with a bit of ice. It's refreshing, cool...and healthy. Sometimes I add fruit wedges; oranges, lemons, limes usually. - 7/30/2011   10:37:01 PM

I've had fresh from the coconut water before, but this would be much more practical and portable! I'd love to try it. The flavors sound interesting and refreshing. - 7/30/2011   10:14:44 PM

Lucky me! I have pure fresh coconut water at the market every morning when I go for my morning walks. Freshly picked from the tree still on the trush the coconut vendor cuts the top with his very sharp cutlass and puts a straw mmmm......luv it! - 7/30/2011   7:23:55 PM

It's funny, I don't mind coconut milk, but coconut water has a very off taste to me. Of COURSE I like the one that isn't as good for me, lol.

Although, maybe I should try the acai flavor, the one without the coconut flavor! - 7/30/2011   11:34:33 AM

I have tried coconut water - not sure of the brand. It was different, but I will usually try any healthy product if I can afford it because I am a very picky eater. I don't like a LOT of foods, so I tend to gravitate to the chips and salsa which I no is not good for me. - 7/30/2011   11:06:37 AM

    LOVE this stuff!
I have a pineapple one in my fridge- it was 50 cents off this week at my local Dominicks, so I said "why not?" - 7/30/2011   11:00:39 AM

I just starting drinking coconut water. I am not fan of the unflavored water which surprised me as I am not a picky eater. However, I love the tangerine flavored coconut water. I have yet to try the pineapple one. - 7/30/2011   10:18:11 AM

i have never had coconut water? but i'd love to try!! - 7/30/2011   9:34:31 AM
I love VitaCoco! It really does do wonders for dehydration after a long workout or when the weather gets in the '90's. I tend to get heat headaches, and this really helps them as well. The biggest advantage over Gatorade is that coconut water has much less sugar and a ton of potassium. - 7/30/2011   9:25:13 AM

I have friends who have raved about this stuff and one orders it regularly online. I'm not about to order 'water' online. So unless I can find it in a store, and I can afford it, I'll pray that I win it. LOL But I do want to try it, very much so! - 7/30/2011   12:37:23 AM
I was lucky enough to win some directly from the company a few years back and I have had it in my home every since! Can't keep the grandkids away from it! - 7/30/2011   12:17:55 AM
Zico has Subscribe and Save at Amazon. Never tried this brand, but I have Zico delivered to me in 32 oz. "jugs" every month. 6 of them. Mmm...

But, I have to drink them REALLY cold, or else I find the taste a little off-putting. That might be because someone once equated it to plasma to me. - 7/29/2011   10:24:39 PM
