We Tried It: Healthy Choice Asian Inspired Café Steamers

With food and fuel prices rising, Healthy Choice says "take in" is in, and take out is out. A frozen meal is certainly more affordable than $6-$10 for a gut-busting little box of Chinese food, but is it more convenient? The trick is to stock up on "take in" dishes so you don't have to drive to the supermarket when a craving hits, thus minimizing the risk of dialing up for delivery.

Healthy Choice has four new Asian Inspired Café Steamers, sold for about $3.59 each. With between 290 and 330 calories, they have 6 grams of fat or less.

What Healthy Choice says:
"Steaming is one of the healthiest ways to cook. Each Asian Inspired Café Steamer features a one-of-a kind SteamCooker, which circulates steam during cooking, heightens flavors, maximizes the crispness and crunch of colorful vegetables and retains the optimum texture of rice."

"To meet American Heart Association guidelines, all Asian Inspired Café Steamers have a controlled amount of sodium and no trans fat or MSG."

What we say:
General Tso’s Chinese Café Steamer
This meal was a victory in satisfying my taste buds. I was craving rice and chicken--and considering something way less healthy. I love Chinese food, and the brown sauce was just the right tangy flavor (not syrupy). The vegetables still had taste, and the chicken was not soggy. I think the steaming feature made this meal ten times better than the average frozen meal. I would buy these and will buy these for myself more often. I looked online and at $3.59 a piece, that’s not bad.

Sweet & Spicy Orange Zest Chicken
Easy to prepare, good taste and texture for vegetables - not mushy but crisp and firm. There was a bit more sauce than I prefer but overall it was a healthy and quick lunch option.

Five Spice Beef and Vegetables
This was pretty good. The vegetables were crisp enough and the beef was adequately tender. I don't know what "five spices" were used, but I liked them. This isn't really as good as takeout (oh, how good and yet so bad all that MSG is!), but it's definitely better for me. If I were craving takeout I wouldn't go out and buy this, but if I already had it in the freezer, it would satisfy me.

I am a big fan of the asian steamers . . . but not any of the others! - 3/24/2010   3:17:41 PM

I like the General Tso but I would have to say my favorite is the Cajun Shrimp and Chicken. I have been eating these for about 2 months for lunch and lost about 12 pounds. Of c ourse I have been exercising more too and watching my calorie intake. I love the containers to for craft projects for my students! - 3/6/2009   8:47:30 AM

I actually was looking forward to these, I had a coupon, they were on sale, then I get there, look through the selection....chicken chicken beef chicken beef, all the way through. I'm a vegetarian, and kinda bummed out. - 1/19/2009   11:31:45 AM

omg! I did not know that regular General Tso's had that much sodium. I will make my own before I buy it again. I will try the Cafe Steamers but I am partial to Amy's. Her frozen foods never taste like well....frozen food. I am not a vegetarian but if i choose to have a veggie day..it's Amy's all the way. - 1/18/2009   11:46:18 PM

you can actually buy these health frozen foods and control your calorie intake. It is similar to being on Jenny Craig or Nutrisystems but at a fraction of the cost. At Jenny Craig, you eat their meals and add as many vegetables as you want. - 1/18/2009   3:14:00 PM

I might give these a try... Usually I stay away from these pre-packaged healthy items because I can usually make it at home for 1/3 of the price, but it is nice to have some of these things on hand when you are running out of ingredients and don't have time to hit the grocery store. - 1/17/2009   4:58:34 PM

I really enjoy the Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers if I am in a hurry and don't have time to prepare anything. I definitely would not eat these everyday as they are a little high in sodium, but so much healthier than eating McDonald's when you're in a hurry. I definitely give Cafe Steamers a thumbs-up! - 12/9/2008   1:01:28 PM

The regular steamers are WAY better and less calories. They are nice to have once in awhile but not everyday. Also the sodium is still higher than I would like, but I perfer these steamers over smart ones. - 10/19/2008   3:58:14 PM

I think these are great! I also like the non-asian cafe steamers. I am a big fan of keeping a stash of frozen meals at work so that I don't go out to eat instead. I think the best part of the frozen meals is the portion size. - 10/2/2008   4:22:53 PM

I think I will try this rather than ordering out for lunch every day battling between healthy options and not so healthy options. This would eliminate all of that including the over spending which I SO cannot afford! - 10/2/2008   12:43:17 PM

My supermarket (Giant Food, in the Washington D.C. area) regularly has these meals on sale. I can usually get 5 for $11, which brings the cost down to a little over $2 each. They usually have one of the diet meal brands on sale each week, but they rotate. I stock up when the ones I like are on sale, and I take them to work for lunch. - 10/1/2008   9:37:38 PM

For everyone looking to save, my friend just send me a funny little fortune from this site where you can download a $1-off coupon for the HC Asian Steamers. The General Tso's flavor is my favorite! Check it out:

I've been buying these on and off since July, the five spice beef was probably my favorite. I'm a little burnt out on them right now, but its great to have one in the freezer when I don't feel like cooking, and the take-out options would blow my calories for the day. - 9/30/2008   12:55:53 PM

I tried 2 different kinds of these and hated them both! The flavor was gross and the some of the veggies were unedable. I'll stick to he paninis - which are great! - 9/30/2008   12:05:18 PM

I L-O-V-E these! I've tried the sweet and sour Chicken and the Five spice beef(actually just ate it for lunch). I will DEFINATELY buy them again! I'm a big chinese food fan and these are a good guilt-free substitute! - 9/30/2008   11:53:25 AM

Bob went shopping and purchased another type of Heathy Choice dinner, I complained because it wasn't what you posted,. It was delicious--was chicken medillons and cheesey ruce, Veggies were on the side. After I ate it, entered it in my meal log, I told him to get MORE! - 9/30/2008   1:20:57 AM

I really love Chinese but have given it up due to problems with msg. I am a person who only uses the salt that comes in the food so I don't eat too much sodium. These steamers are great. Great taste without the msg. - 9/29/2008   8:23:36 PM

I tried one of the steamers the picture looked really good on the box but I was disappointed with the lack of flavor and I do not need any food that I have to add salt to. I love the Smartones. - 9/29/2008   3:47:33 PM

I love these for lunch! I am always in a rush in the morning, so I grab one of these and an apple to make a decently filling lunch. I still need a snack come around mid-day, but I find that normal regardless of what I eat. My favorite (though not part of the asian inspired line of Cafe Steamers) is the beef merlot. - 9/29/2008   1:53:55 PM

I truly enjoy all of the cafe steamer meals. I really do not care for frozen meals but these do not taste as if they were frozen at all. They are great for lunch as they fill me up, but not so much as to make me so full I need a nap and the calorie count is so low! - 9/29/2008   10:59:25 AM

I HAVEN'T TRIED THESE AND PROBABLY WON'T. STILL TOO MUCH SODIUM IN THESE. I READ WHERE PEOPLE ARE FRUSTRATED WITH THEIR LACK OF WEIGHT LOSS AND THEN SEE THAT THEY ARE EATING PREPACKAGED FOODS DAILY. I UNDERSTAND THE CONVENIENCE. MAKING A QUICK SANDWICH IN THE MORNING TAKES LESS THAN 2 MINUTES AND IS MUCH BETTER FOR YOU!!! - 9/29/2008   10:57:50 AM

Sorry, my computer kicked me out. As I was saying, but I won't buy these meals again. I will stick with homemade if anything. - 9/29/2008   10:39:29 AM

I'm not a big fan of the frozen meals. They never look asgood or taste as good a depicted. Bought the Cafe Steamers ( hey they were on sale), sorry I did. Tried three different ones and just wasn't satisfied. Now I'm looking to pawn the other two of on my sister. - 9/29/2008   10:07:27 AM

Healthy Choice is usually my choice when I need to bring a meal to work (about once a week, sometime twice - I work part-time retail), and the steamers are generally what I choose. I like that Healthy Choice pays attention to sodium, while the other manufacturers tend not to. :) - 9/29/2008   9:06:08 AM

I was never found of Healthy Choice meals. However, I had a coupon so I decided to give these a try. They were very good! The veggies stayed crisp and they satisfied my need for chinese. I have since bought more. - 9/29/2008   8:43:43 AM

I tried the General Tso's chicken last week and was quite impressed. As a former chef (now a teacher), I am extremely picky about processed/prepared foods, and this was quite tasty. The texture of the veggies was crisp, the rice was not soggy; in short, if one MUST have a frozen meal for convenience, these are a step beyond acceptable; they are actually good. - 9/29/2008   6:52:03 AM

I make my own version of this by grilling my own chicken, cook my own brown rice and then using the Iron Chef store bought General's sauce. I also add extra crushed red peppers. I eat this 5 times a week and make it on the weekends for my lunch all week, portioning the chicken and rice out, heating them seperately in a microwave and then putting them together and then putting the sauce or glaze on and cooking them for all together for one more minute to heat and seal the glaze. Chicken cost is about $2 a pound, rice about $.25 a cup and glaze is $3.50 a bottle and I use 1/4 of the bottle per serving so $.90, total under 3 dollars and is chicken 110 calories per 4 ounces, 1 cup rice 150 calories and general's glaze 6 tbsp 160 calories = 420 calories. Not sure how this compares to what has been reviewed, just something to think about. - 9/28/2008   10:35:01 PM

I have tried several of the cafe steamers.Cajun Style chicken and Shrimp is my favorite, but I also like the Beef Merlot, Chicken Margherita,Chicken Tuscany, and Roasted Chicken Marsala. My husbands job keeps him on the road a lot and these are a very easy and satisfying meal that I can have in the freezer to fix for myself. - 9/28/2008   7:45:12 PM
