We Ate It: SOY JOY bars

SOY JOY's TV commercials, with brightly colored animations, are really entertaining, so when our bars arrived we couldn't wait to dive in.
We tried all six flavors: Berry, Strawberry, Mango Coconut, Peanut Chocolate Chip, Raisin Almond and Apple.
Everyone loved the Apple, Peanut Chocolate Chip and Raisin Almond. We weren't keen on the Mango Coconut.
Be warned: The bars are small, but they are dense and satisfyingly chewy. They're dark in color and have a strong, sometimes spicy flavor. We decided we would like to eat the Soy Joy bars with a glass of milk (or soy milk) or a cup of tea or coffee.

Our thoughts:
"It smells and tastes a little like a Fig Newton, and you can see the raisins and bits of almond."

"I like that it uses real, whole ingredients and has a shorter ingredients list than most protein bars. Tastes and looks more natural. Can smell and taste the flavor of strawberry, but it's not overwhelming."

"A little drier than I'd expect (like you, with that fat content I'd expect more moisture), but I actually really liked the taste. It reminded me very much of a biscotti, it would be a great 140 calorie mid-morning snack along with a cup of coffee or tea."

"It was dense, with good strawberry flavor. It reminded me of a fat-free muffin."

Our vending machine at work had these so I thought I'd give it a try-YUCK!
I'll stick to Balance bars, luna bars and Fiber one bars - 11/2/2008   6:00:11 PM

I did not like these at all. They were dry and not very tasty. If I am going to spend calorie, I want something with taste. - 11/2/2008   3:27:17 PM

They are delicious, my husband and I love them. But they are TINY! You could easily eat 3 of them just for a decent snack. They are 2 bites for my husband and about 3 for me. - 10/19/2008   10:34:07 AM

I tend to eat a lot of nutrition bars (Luna, Cliff, etc) and I really like the taste of these. They are different from other bars both in flavor and texture and very satisfying. Definitely satisfied my sweet tooth. I buy these whenever they are on sale. - 10/16/2008   4:16:24 PM

I love them. ^-^ I like the texture, and the flavors are nice. - 10/10/2008   10:15:38 PM

Got one for free at yoga last year. Gross and not worth the calories and fat. They are small and yuck. For 40 more calories, have a luna bar! They taste like a candy bar and are full of fiber and protein. They come in a million awesome flavors and are bigger too! - 9/30/2008   1:18:24 AM

I tried these and did not like them very much. They have a very weird dry, chewy texture...the taste wasn't the worst but I just couldn't see paying for these when there are so many options of nutritional bars out there...many of which I have tried and like MUCH better than Soy Joy!........but to each his own ;) - 9/29/2008   1:49:13 PM

I got some free on their web site. I was drier than I thought but it was OK for something to eat that was healthy for a change. Give it a try you might like it. I haven't priced them yet. - 9/29/2008   1:35:56 PM

I love them. A nice snack without all those carbs and calories that the regular cereal bars have. A nice snack for those of us who are diabetic. - 9/29/2008   12:56:11 PM

I used to eat Soy Joys. I love them, but I don't buy them now because I figured they were now out for me. I try to refrain from purchasing "temptations" as much as possible. - 9/18/2008   9:40:16 PM

These are the most horrible things I have ever tasted and I have tasted a lot of bars in my life; I need to state for the record though that my best [skinny] friend likes these and buys them often enough. I personally think they taste like CARDBOARD!!! :-) - 9/12/2008   6:22:46 PM

I tried my free sample. I thought I hated it but by the end of the bar I kinda liked it. It has a unique taste. But I haven't bought anymore so that should tell you something. Give me a good old Fiber One bar! - 9/9/2008   9:24:34 AM

I picked up one of these at a packet pick up for a walk/run. I'm vegan so I thought since it was called "Soy Joy" it wouldn't have dairy in it. Wrong! I haven't tried them because of that. (Nor have I looked recently to see if they have been reformulated.)

I was given a couple free ones as samples. I'll preface this by saying I eat lots of soy products, and love soy in general. But Soy Joy was no joy. They tasted positively vile. And, they were dry and weird. I say this is a big "no thanks" even to free ones in the future. - 9/4/2008   4:13:28 PM

I have not tried them yet. But thanks for the information. Now I know what to expect when I do try them. - 9/2/2008   2:17:25 PM

Alton Brown had an episode of Good Eats dedicated to the making of home made protein bars. Here's the link.

Received a free one in a packette at a 5KWalk/Run. Blech! It stunk up the car and my foyer when I left it in the back overnight. You couldn't pay me enough to eat one of these things. - 9/2/2008   10:31:49 AM

I like the ones that are gluten free as there it can be challenging to find gluten free healthy snacks with fiber. They also have fewer calories than some of the other gluten free snack bars.

When I tried these, I didn't care for these at all. I have a friend who loves them, though. I think that it is definitely one of those "personal taste" things. If you know that you like chewy, fruity flavored bread-type snacks (it is a lot like fruitcake), then you will LOVE these. I like snacks with more of a crunch. - 8/31/2008   3:20:19 PM

These are deceiving. I tried them 2 years ago when they were first introduced, b/c I managed a health food store, and the bars sent to us as a sample. If I remember correctly, I ate it thinking it was vegan/vegetarian and was bummed to read the the ingredients only to find parmesan cheese & eggs. I didn't like the texture at all, and I thought they were just for show. I can't believe they've lasted this long. - 8/31/2008   8:39:15 AM

I have not tried these, and it sounds like I woudn't like them. I guess I may be the only one here who didn't like the commercials. It's strange, but for some reason, they annoyed me- and I love cartoons! - 8/30/2008   1:21:19 PM

I like them - they remind me of fruitcake (yup, I'm one of those that really like fruitcake) I like variety and prefer protein bars without the candy bar taste or the overly chewy cardboard feel I get from powerbars - 8/30/2008   10:09:33 AM

I love Soy Joy! I usually eat them before I ref or play soccer. They are an ideal size & don't give me indegestion. Sometimes I'll have one between games if I'm officiating 2 games back to back. They are a great boost & help me maintain my energy! - 8/29/2008   11:38:38 AM

I am only supposed to eat 1200 calories daily as recommended by SP. I think 140 calories is quite a bit and really don't have room for this high calorie snack. I would not buy it. - 8/29/2008   10:35:44 AM

I was another person who did the free trial, and got three bars in the mail. They were OK. Not great, not disgusting. I really have no desire to seek these out on the supermarket shelves. - 8/29/2008   8:27:39 AM

I brought this from our local health food store. It was good and I didn't feel bad for eating it. A good option when are you craving something and you don't want to ruin your day by eating an unhealthy snack. - 8/29/2008   8:07:17 AM

I find these commercials airing in the US funny because Japan has been selling Soy Joy bars forever it seems. We had our first ones here and since we couldn't get usual US snacks easily and expected weird things in Japan the taste, texture and smell of this snack as mentioned in previous posts didn't bother us. When you expect odd things the odd things don't turn out to be so shocking.

My kids love the Orange/Chocolate and I prefer the Peach. It's good in a pinch for a snack on the go, in the train station, or packed for school or work.

Also funny, right after Christmas in Japan stores highlight displays of organizational tools. As in the US, Christmas comes and you want to get newly organized for the new year. Also around the new year or spring you get displays of health equipment and sportswear for getting out of our winter slumber and fit again. Always front and center in these displays is an assortment of SOY JOY bars. - 8/28/2008   11:08:32 PM

I just bought one for the 1st time.. I did not like the texture, but like so many things I figure that it may be an acquired taste...so I will buy them again - 8/27/2008   10:26:20 PM

I love the coconut mango...but they are small and don't fill me up. Plus, I keep an eye on carbs and even though these are of the "natural" variety, it's still not worth splurging on very often. - 8/27/2008   9:21:47 PM

i find these a good alternative for a morning snack, compared to the chocolate (or other sweet) flavored protein bars out there. However, as an afternoon snack, i prefer balance bars. - 8/27/2008   9:16:22 PM

When these came out, I couldn't wait to try them. I was getting ready to buy a big box of them when my co-worker attended a marathon and they were giving them away. She got one of each for me. I was thankful that she did so that I didn't waste my money on something I really disliked. The flavor, the appearance, I really didn't like them at all. I was so disappointed because I really wanted to like them! - 8/27/2008   6:30:08 PM

I didn't think they tasted anything like Luna bars. I did not like them myself. Maybe, it is the fruitcake like taste. Well, we all have different tastes. I prefer the Southbeach diet bars myself. - 8/27/2008   1:53:32 PM

I'm cracking up because i still dont' know about these bars after reading comments! Its just like everything else i guess - yuck for some, yum for others.

Are they meant to be a snack or meal replacement? I prefer meals to meal replacements hehehe but always looking for healthy snacks.

One thing - they didnt look too pretty in the pictures above - 8/27/2008   1:31:28 PM

Maybe they are an acquired taste, like was mentioned above. The first on I tried was sooooo awful... - 8/27/2008   11:59:32 AM
