We Ate It: Kashi Honey Sunshine

Unlike most American kids, I was never allowed to have sugary cereal. Cheerios, Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes (usually the store brand) were the norm in our house. Sometimes, though, my mom would buy Quaker Corn Bran, which quickly became my favorite cereal. (Seriously, what kid's favorite cereal was high-fiber corn bran? I was one odd child. I digressÖ)

We recently tried a cereal that reminded me of my old favorite: Kashi Honey Sunshine. The taste is as sweet and wonderful as the name. I think even my mother would approve of this one!

Kashi Honey Sunshine
Serving size 3/4 cup
100 calories
1.5 grams fat
no saturated fat
no cholesterol
140 mg of sodium
A whopping 6 grams of fiber
6 grams of sugar
2 grams of protein

Our thoughts:

"The little corn-y pillows are sweet but not too sweet. They remind me of a cross between Quaker Corn Bran and Cap'n Crunch (only without the buttery aftertaste). They're sufficiently crunchy in milk, and the 3/4 cup serving, combined with some soy milk and blueberries, keeps me full until lunch.
The first ingredient is whole grain yellow corn meal, and there's not a single ingredient I can't pronounce!"

"Kashi calls this cereal 'Honey-kissed Seven Whole Grain Cereal Pillows.' Well, these are so good I want to dream of these little honey-flavored pillows."

"This was like a healthier, less sweet and more natural version of Cap'n Crunch cereal! It had a similar taste and texture but wasn't overwhelmingly sweet like Cap'n Crunch is. I liked the flavor and the fact that it had about 6g of fiber per serving, but it's low in protein (2 grams/serving), and didn't really fill me up."

"The Captainís Healthy Cousin. Iíve always been a fan of Capín Crunch but also tried to avoid it for the most part since itís not the most healthy cereal option out there. If youíre looking for a healthy alternative that still tastes great youíll want to give this a try!"

"I think is my new favorite cereal. I really like having cereal in the morning, both for the taste and to have a higher-fiber meal to feel full all morning. I like a little bit of sweetness, but not too much. This cereal was just right!

In addition to eating with milk in the morning, I think a small cupful dry would be a great snack."

Retail price right now is $3.79. The good news is that when you sign up on the Kashi website, you can get coupons for their products!

Have you tried Kashi Honey Sunshine? Well, what did you think?

I just came across this blog and wanted to tell you that I thought the same thing (about it being like Crunchy Corn Bran). A couple of months ago, the SuperTarget by me started carrying the Crunchy Corn Bran cereal again. I was so excited and it as as yummy as I remembered. - 4/27/2010   11:13:52 AM

I had a $1 coupon for this cereal and said what the heck. I'm glad I tried it, I really like it. And it's odd people say it's not feeling, it was for me.

    Thanks, - 5/13/2009   1:13:35 PM

I tried this cereal after reading this...it was yummy! Like a cross between captn crunch & pops cereals. The only problem was that it was not very satisfying... my husband said "Ok that was a good appetiser, what's for breakfast." - 5/7/2009   1:16:42 PM

If it tastes like captain crunch... I'm giving it to my son as a "healthier alternative". I have been faithfully eating Kashi, heart to heart cereal for over a year now. I just stabalizes my blood sugar level and keeps me feeling full. After I eat some cereals, I feel like "what's for breakfast" right after I'm done eating them. I don't feel that way with heart to heart. I love the taste of Go Lean but it's a bit gassy for me later. Gross.. - 4/3/2009   9:07:44 AM

Yes I have tried this cereal and it's great! I like that it has more fiber but kind of a bummer that the protein is on the low side. I also like that it contains a low amount of sugar. Kashi has many great brands of foods that I enjoy on a regular basis. - 3/21/2009   4:36:51 PM

I love this cereal.I have enjoyed every cereal from kashi that I've tried. Only thing is, it doesn't fill me up like other cereals do. I love fiber one cereal cause it stays with me all morning and I don't get hungry till lunchtime. But the kashi cereal is very good tasting. - 2/6/2009   4:54:00 PM

Growing up on Cap'n Crunch made this a tempting purchase for me, and it IS tasty but it's not very filling at all and leaves me with a desire to eat more, not good.......even with the added fruits, whole grains etc I have for breakfast every morning. Once this box is gone, I don't plan on buying more simply for that fact, I love my Kashi Honey Flax (or whatever)...very tasty & filling without the residual urge to graze - 2/4/2009   10:27:24 AM

I hate this cereal. I don't know why, and I almost feel bad for feeling this way because I love everything else Kashi makes. It tastes too much like honey, almost a sickly sweet. But Kashi in general I love! Thanks for this review. - 1/26/2009   3:51:10 PM

I like the Kashi Good Friends cereal, but I just realized that it has a ton of sugar in it! 13 grams per serving! I'm going to try the Honey Sunshine. - 11/25/2008   12:33:52 AM

I eat dry cereal only occassionally and use yogurt instead of milk. This sounds good, especially for the times (rare) I crave something sweet. I'll give it a try. - 11/2/2008   11:13:41 AM

This is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE cereal. I gave up puffins for this! It is even better and priced better too! My kids think it is great too. The taste, the texture, the size and the calories are perfect! - 10/19/2008   10:31:50 AM

I have been wanting to try this - the design makes it very attractive to my taste buds. I was wary of spending the money, though, especially if it turned out to be gross. I can't wait now to purchase a box. I may try breading something with it, too! :) - 9/11/2008   12:24:26 AM

I bought the cereal while my sister was visiting me from Texas. She was so adamant about me eating healthy; so I bought this one; it is really good. I put in sliced bananas and it is really yummy. I will continue to buy this product. - 9/10/2008   3:38:27 PM

I love it!! It reminds me of less-sweet Cap'n Crunch. If you make a mixture of that + corn flakes & spices, it makes a nice breading for chicken strips and such. The recipe (with Cap'n Crunch instead of Kashi) is online if you search "Planet Hollywood Cap'n Crunch chicken."

I would try it, I love cereal. My favorite thing in the world when I was a little little girl was that my mom would get up early on Sat morning just long enough to hand me a bowl of Rice Crispies in milk, turn on Cpn Kangaroo cartoons and go back to bed. Leaving me to let my Rice Krispies snap crackle and pop away before I'd eat it... yeah they got soggy, but I didn't want to eat them while they were still singing... (I was a weird little girl LOL)

I'd try this one, I like Cpn Crunch EXCEPT for the after taste, so this might be the kicker!

Hey, my two favorite cereals as a kid were Wheat Chex and Corn Flakes. And my mom would make me eat stuff like Froot Loops because my little sister wouldn't eat anything else! As a 20-something, I'm more fond of shredded wheat.

I'm a little wary of this. Kashi cereals have rarely pleased me, and I don't like Cap'n Crunch. Maybe if it's on sale I'll give it a try, because the numbers sure do look good. - 9/9/2008   1:31:11 AM
