    I went to "Say What? Diet Soda Makes You Gain Weight" because I drink Diet Coke daily, in addition to 10-12 glasses of water. I was appalled by the article, and by the study. Very misleading, if not meaningless. There was NO mention of food intake or types of foods, and the study drew from a group of 474 Mexican Americans and European Americans in Texas. Take any of these articles with a grain of salt, and look for those with links to the actual study summaries. I will not accept summaries of summaries without details so I can evaluate how valid I believe the data is.

    Saying that diet soda is associated with weight gain is not the same as saying that diet soda causes weight gain. Correlation is not causation. Also, the studies from which this information was obtained are preliminary studies, not final peer-reviewed reports. While the study took into account "waist circumference, diabetes status, leisure-time physical activity level, neighborhood of residence, age and smoking status at the beginning of each interval, as well as sex, ethnicity and years of education," nothing was said about the diet of the people involved. My point is that the title saying diet soda *causes* weight gain is misleading; this study doesn't prove it's the diet soda that's causing the changes. Doesn't mean diet soda doesn't have unintended side effects, just that this study shows an association, not a causation. - 7/18/2011   11:06:56 AM

    The Diet Blog article is up-to-the minute: Health Risks of Being Skinny

    It was recently reported that slim may not always lead to a lower risk of heart disease and diabetes.

    Scientists a few weeks ago identified a gene linked both to having a lean body and to a higher risk of metabolic diseases.

    Those scientists are researchers from Britain's Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit. This gene was linked to both having less body fat and increased risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes--illnesses which are normally associated with being overweight.

    I have never in my life, ever (not even at my lowest mature adult weight 3 years ago) been at risk of being too skinny ... so, perhaps AMPHIBI is a little biased ...
    But, still, in all truth the store of knowledge could not be too vast.

    I thought the article about diet soda was interesting, especially because I remember hearing several years ago that artificial sweeteners messed with our insulin levels. It actually really bothers me that it's only becoming public knowledge now, and makes me wonder what other negative effects artificial sweeteners have that are going unpublished. - 7/18/2011   5:47:25 AM

    Hmm, the prescription one. . . I sometimes actually ask for name brand. Some meds in generic form have made me sick or have not worked as well so I request name brand. Also, if you request to the pharmacist that it be generic, they will more than likely make the switch (and vice versa) - 7/17/2011   11:41:54 PM
