    I didn't read "Parenting an Overweight Child" since I worked so hard to make sure I didn't have one with the five I had. They use to see "junk cereal" in the grocery store and want it, but I'd just go right on by as I didn't waste money on things like that. I knew they'd seen commercials for it and they were just asking for what they'd seen. - 3/29/2011   6:38:42 PM

    "Parenting an Overweight Child Can Be Difficult" was a must read for me. My almost 7 year old granddaughter is overweight, but she is also off the charts on her height. The article really didn't give much advice on how to help these children lose weight, just told you what NOT to do :( - 3/28/2011   3:45:45 PM

    *10 Morning Workout Motivators - good ideas
    *Surprising Foods that Contain Gluten - anything with malt or malt flavoring is from barley including most beers and breakfast cereals......and so has gluten. Some puddings are without gluten. LaChoy soy sauce is without gluten. That curry might have gluten is a surprise to me.

    The "surprising" list of foods containing gluten isn't very surprising if you know anything about how many of those foods are made. Why anyone would think that beer, gravy (anyone who cooks knows you use starch to thicken a sauce), or malt don't contain wheat is beyond me.

    The article from the Washington Post was really interesting. So many folks like to villainize parents of overweight kids, but they forget that if it's hard for adults to talk about weight in a supportive way with each other, it's probably even harder to talk to your child about it! It was nice to see the topic explored in a non-judgmental way. - 3/28/2011   6:55:18 AM

    Went right for the Almond Butter recipe as I would like to try this and can only find it in the more expensive grocery stores. That recipe led me to a whole bunch of muffin, doughnut and bread recipes - so I think I better get on my bike for awhile! - 3/27/2011   12:10:33 PM

    I had to read the "walk off10 pounds in 3 weeks" article, because there's no way I could do it! I already walk 5 miles a day and eat in my range, just to maintain. Turns out that the article calls for a 1300-calorie "diet," yet we all know that dieting doesn't work in the long haul. If I restricted myself to 1300 calories alone, I'd lose some weight for sure, but probably not 10 lbs. Also, the model shown in the article looks on the verge of anorexia. A tempting, but not a good, message in this article. Well, at least we SparkFolks can be critical thinkers about information that we read in the news. - 3/27/2011   10:23:20 AM
