The trick is all in the toning. Sculpt your arms sleek and sexy like Jillian's with her five go-to moves.

1. One-Legged Curl

Targets: Biceps, abs, butt, and legs

  • Stand on left leg, holding a 5- to 10-pound dumbbell in each hand, arms by sides, palms facing forward.
  • Lift extended left leg directly behind you and hinge forward at hips so that body is parallel to ground from head to left heel.
  • Maintaining one-legged position throughout, bring elbows to sides of ribs and then curl weights to shoulders.
  • Lower arms (extending them downward) and repeat.
  • Do 20 reps, then switch legs and repeat. Do 2 sets.

A good strength and cardio program will shape up arms. It isn't a huge mystery. Consistency will do the job. - 7/18/2011   11:19:14 PM

Ha Ha good point ELBALL ! I didn't notice until I reread it . LMAO even Jillian could NOT do it. I just went to FITNESS magasine blog and it looks like it was taken more or less verbatim from the site. So it ould appear TWO proofreaders screwed up. - 7/16/2011   10:33:42 PM

How does Michelle Obama get her arms??? P90X, baby!! It's awesome- and it WORKS.

I don't like the concept of spot-reducing (it's a farce) but I totally promote weight training for increasing fitness. It's helps with "tone" as people keep putting it- which is basically where your muscular shape can show through and stop looking flabby. You can't get that "tone" without weight training!!! And you can't get rid of the fat that hides the shape- if you aren't eating right. There is no exercise that will work better than EATING RIGHT for allowing the fit muscles to show. Abs are made in the kitchen!!! And sometimes great shoulders are too. - 7/15/2011   7:19:32 PM

I agree with LQUEST4754. I don't even like Jillian's ads. I admire her arms, but can't possibly imitate her routine with my physical problems. Oh well. I'd rather know how the First Lady, Michelle Obama, works on her arms!

If you want to get toned (AND YOU WILL) try Chalene Xtreme. ASPIRANTX2007 you are absolutely correct cardio has to be incorporated w/ strength training.

I love Jillian as she does what she does with commitment. I think her Mom is great as well. She raised a good DD. - 7/15/2011   12:50:39 AM

Do the blog entries get proofread before being posted? I'd like to know how I'm supposed to support myself on my left leg while lifting and extending it. Any suggestions? - 7/14/2011   1:53:26 PM

    She DOES have amazing arms!!!

That being said, she uses this pose (stork pose she calls it) in her Ripped in 30 DVD. The modification, if you can't get your leg up that high yet, is to stand with the toes of that leg just touching the ground (don't put your weight on it). Increase the height of your leg as you get stronger. HTH :) - 7/14/2011   1:18:08 PM

Wow, this is an amazing exercise, I just don't know how well I'll keep my balance when I try it. But I will definitely try it. - 7/14/2011   12:35:25 PM

Toning definitely exists; however, you will not see results in areas where that lovely toned muscle is covered by fat -- another reason to combine cardio with strength training. - 7/14/2011   12:28:20 PM

Thank you for sharing I would love to tone my arms & will be doing an arm exercise routine for sure. - 7/14/2011   12:22:42 PM

Toning exists; spot reducing doesn't. Toning means getting muscles stronger, not reducing fat in a certain spot of the body. I may try that move, though I'm a little afraid that I'll tip over! - 7/14/2011   12:21:34 PM

While spot-reducing may not exist, toning certainly does! You can strength train to tone your body.

I don't currently have a good arm routine, but it's definitely one of the parts that bugs me the most. I need to remember that while I love cardio so much more, I have to strength train too. - 7/14/2011   11:43:37 AM

Um, why are we talking about toning as if it exists? - 7/14/2011   10:15:34 AM

I dislike Jillian and avoid all programs she is on because of her condescending attitude. The people on Biggest Loser are not treated with the dignity they deserve. They really are not learning to function in their own environments. There are trainers who are just as inspiring or even more so in every town and city across the United States. I hope that they are one day featured here. - 7/14/2011   10:04:08 AM
