Fall will be here in just a couple weeks, which means we should be experiencing cooler temperatures very soon! During the hot summer months, many people take their workouts indoors to escape the heat, including myself. With the cooler weather that accompanies the fall season though, it's a great time to get back outside for some of your workouts.

After moving from California to the Midwest five years ago, I have experienced the seasonal changes that Californians don't typically experience.  Before living in a place that has such drastic seasonal changes, I never really had a "favorite season" for outdoor exercise . However, now that I live in such a place, I definitely have a preference as to which seasons I like to take my workouts outside -- fall and spring. I love fall the most though, because it not only brings cooler weather, but it is fun to watch the leaves change color and I don't have as many allergy issues to deal with compared to the spring time.

You won't find me doing many workouts outside during the summer here due to the heat and humidity, but as soon as the temperatures start cooling down and fall starts to come in, you will find me working out outside a lot more. Some of my favorite outdoor exercises in the fall include simple things such as hiking, biking and walking, which allow me to get a good workout in and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful scenery. However, there are many other outdoor exercises that are perfect in the fall too!

I live in AZ and it's dreadfully hot in the summer to go out and do any outdoor exercising. The fall and winter is the best time to do any sort of exercising, because it's much cooler and comfortable. Early spring isn't too bad, unless summer decides to come early. When I lived in Jersey, fall and spring were the best times to do any sort of walking or outdoor activities. - 9/8/2012   1:54:57 AM

Fall and Spring are my favorites...it's hard to choose just one! I love the crisp fall air and the gorgeous fall colors, but I also love spring - the trees just starting to bud, the spring flowers and flowering trees, and the smell of spring. Love them both! - 9/7/2012   9:04:33 PM

    Tie between spring and autumn.
After a freezing winter, Spring is very welcome! The days are getting longer, the weather is warmer, leaves and flowers are peaking out.
After a record-setting summer, am so looking forward to Autumn! Cooler temps and I like autumn colors - 9/7/2012   8:30:27 PM

Now that I've entered menopause, summers are harder to handle, but I continue to get outside most during the summers. I live in Boulder, Colorado, and if it's really hot I just head up into the foothills and mountains. Either by bike or driving to great hiking places - we have it all. This summer was our hottest on record. The Denver area averages 33 days of 90+ degree days. This year we're already over 70 - more than double the average! It's been rough, but getting out early makes it possible to enjoy even the weather "down on the flats".

Each season brings a change to the sports that we do. That can be really fun and keeps things fresh.

Wish me good blessings for my Century (100 miles) ride this Sunday!! - 9/7/2012   8:10:27 PM

I like the fall because of the colors of the leaves and the crunch of them when stepped on. I like spring too, because of all the beautiful flowers that peek up through the ground. - 9/7/2012   6:47:16 PM

Spring! Nothing like hiking and biking while watching the earth come alive. Not to mention, everything smells like GREEN. *mad grin* It's fantastic. I get so giddy over the reawakening of nature that it gets me more motivated. - 9/7/2012   5:21:52 PM

My favorite season is summer, but it's because the only outdoor exercise I really like is hiking and mountain biking. Summer is really the only appropriate season! - 9/7/2012   4:39:11 PM

Spring was my favorite season my whole life.... that is, until we moved to Deming 3 years ago! I was born & raised in Phoenix, and March and April are always fabulous there (plus my birthday's in March, so that helped, too!) But here in southern NM, we get these crazy winds in the spring that send dirt flying at 60 miles per hour... OUCH and ICK! So, now I'd definitely have to say Fall is the best time to be outdoors! - 9/7/2012   3:11:44 PM

I live in the Pacific NW and agree with BKSKITTYKATT. Spring and Fall are the best times for outdoor activities. Summer is too humid and winter is too wet. We get enough sun breaks in the Spring and Fall to get in good walks here. Except for 2 or 3 years ago when we had 9 months of rain. Not all in one stretch but that year I was very thankful when we finally got our 3 weeks of summer. lol - 9/7/2012   2:46:58 PM

Summer -- I start itching for the mountian hikes & go as soon as the snow retreats. Some years that is August! - 9/7/2012   1:55:43 PM

Spring and Fall are my favorite. The cooler temperatures are much nicer and it's great to see the earth come back to life in the spring and the changes that fall brings too - 9/7/2012   12:44:52 PM

I like both spring and fall. After winter, it feels good to have a little warmth, and after summer, it's great to have a little bit cooler weather. - 9/7/2012   12:25:52 PM

Here in south Texas, summer lasts from March to October at least, so, although I do love spring and fall, they are very, very short. Winter is even shorter, but we do occasionally even get freezing temps. - 9/7/2012   12:01:55 PM

Here in the rainy Pacific NW, I definitely have to say summer. The mountain snow recedes enough for awesome hiking, we get a little bit of sunshine, and there's swimming to be had in the summer as well.

My next favorite would be fall, since it's usually still fairly dry. It's very windy, though, so when hiking you have to watch out for widowmakers (the tree branches, in this context of the term).

I dislike winter. Despite living out here, I've never been skiing, and it's cold, wet, and windy, so winter is not my season. - 9/7/2012   11:26:45 AM

I love fall and spring, but I think fall is my favorite (but only by a little). I love the cooler weather and the bright sunny days. I love the leaves changing and taking walks in the woods. I can't wait to get my jeans and sweaters out! - 9/7/2012   11:22:59 AM

Living in the Midwest, I too experience all 4 seasons with distinction. I really love them all-I began running outdoors on a 6 degree January day, and I thought I would die for sure. I have discovered that every season has something to appreciate in the outdoors. The crispness and quiet of Winter is amazing and calming. The newness of life in Spring is inspiring for fresh starts, the heat of Summer reminds me that I used to HATE the heat, but now love it, and Fall had always been a favorite time to watch the changing leaves and enjoy the slow creep into winter. I really LOVE them all for their unique experiences. I love the Midwest! - 9/7/2012   10:11:40 AM

Spring and Fall are my favorite seasons for working out outdoors. Spring because I love watching the trees and flowers in bloom ready to give color the world from a gray winter and the brisk air and firy hues of Fall invigorates my senses. - 9/7/2012   9:52:07 AM

For me, it is summer and fall. I love taking walk on the beach and elsewhere when all the leaves are out. And I love swimming in the ocean. And fall has a lot to offer without summer humidex. - 9/7/2012   9:36:36 AM

Fall and early winter are best for my breathing (asthma). I love spring too even if I do have some allergies. Summer is too hard to be outdoors long with heat, humidity, and this year horrendous allergies. - 9/7/2012   9:14:34 AM

Living in the Pacific NW, we have about 35-40 degrees and rain most of the year. Summer months provide average temperatures in the seventies, with little rain in July and August. Hands down, I'd rather be outside in the great northwest in summer months without the cold and rain!

If I lived in Phoenix, it would probably be winter as summer is too hot! - 9/7/2012   8:53:17 AM

When I lived in Pennsylvania, it was definitely fall, spring, winter, in that order because my favorite outdoor activity is hiking. I did lots of summer hiking, too, but did not like it in the summer! Here in central Mexico, I'd have to say fall and winter because daytime temps are in the 70s and 60s. Spring is our hottest season, so the only outdoor activity that's enjoyable is swimming! Summer can be warm and humid or beautiful or stormy, so summer is about being flexible. - 9/7/2012   8:51:13 AM

it's hard to beat autumn for running (my outside exercise of choice) as well as hikes and simple walks. but since i'm a summer child, i have to double-vote for summer as well. on days of extreme heat and humidity i have to take it inside, but i do so reluctantly. i like heat and simply adjust my workout and how much water i keep available to cope with it. but the ease of doing longer runs in autumn definitely helps me cope with the sadness of summer's ending!

I will say that enjoy Spring the most. I too live in the Midwest and I hate our winters but will also say that I've dressed for it and gone out and done my walks! When it is really hot and humid, I'm inside!! - 9/7/2012   7:59:29 AM

Spring and fall are both good temperature-wise. I'm not sure if I really prefer one over the other. For hiking, fall is better because in spring the trails are apt to be muddy and in early spring you may even find some lingering ice and snow in shaded areas- and of course spring brings out the bugs but they go away in the fall. Overall, I prefer spring to fall though because I like seeing things start to turn green and I know summer (and camping season) is not far away. In the fall the cooler days are a reminder of what is coming and I dread winter. I do enjoy snowshoeing, but I don't like the cold much and I hate it when I have to drove to work in ice and snow. - 9/7/2012   6:29:43 AM

Since I live in Eastern NC, the best time to even consider outdoor workouts which helps get me away from stress factors and enjoy outdoor simuli is basically Spring & Fall. That means low humidity and a chance to really do some outdoor yardwork & home improvement projects with proper form. Those squats weeding or helping with building projects sure add up. Plus I LOVE going for walks and incorporating in jog intervals. Its easier to go to parks and get everyone including the dogs moving once again. - 9/7/2012   4:57:02 AM
