I am a sometimes flybaby. I think her program works. It can be overwhelming. I also unsubscribed to her cluttermail. I go to her website for my motivation and zone information. I have had trouble spots that were unmanageable before flylady. Her information does bring value. You have to sift through it sometimes and find what works for you, just like any other information we get. - 11/30/2011   10:02:41 AM

I first learned about Pam Young and Peggy Jones, the "SLOB-SISTERS" back in 1983, and they are the ones that "FlyLady" is based on. Pam and Peggy's book "FROM PIGPEN TO PARADISE" has sold over a million copies. I know that being organized is certainly the way to SAVE money. If you teach children to be organized from Day 1, they don't think anything about it. I grew up in the 50's with a "Beaver Cleaver" mother who never wanted me to do anything because it wasn't "good enough", so I certainly learned from Pam and Peggy that doing it right the first time was what mattered and that came about from having a PLAN. - 4/2/2010   7:24:25 PM

I am a flybaby and I have come to realize that our homes being cluttered and disorganized leads to so many issues - depression, over eating and frankly an "I dont care" attitude. Flylady has helped me to organize my home and have a desire to become a better me by losing those extra 40 pounds so I can bless my family each and every day. - 4/2/2010   4:22:24 PM

Personally, I like Flylady. I have received great ideas from her. I think her website/program can be very polarizing. You either really like it or you really don't. What I do see is that even those who are very negative have either taken what they can use and moved on or are just not able to see the benefit of the strategies she offers. As for the products, I have bought a few and they do okay - I just don't see the need to rave about them the way some people do. - 4/1/2010   10:37:36 AM

I love you post. I'm saving to reference it, as time goes on. That's me right on the nose. - 3/31/2010   1:15:15 PM

It seems that if my house is cluttered I have a harder time with following good eating habit and exercising. I think it's because it is so overwhelming that I don't know where to start. l joined Flylady's network several years ago and when I follow her steps to decluttering and her cleaning system things start falling into place. I need to reread her Sink Reflections book again. And as far as her using her religion I ignore that part. LOL - 3/31/2010   8:21:40 AM
  • 63
Teehee, I always thought her emails didn't have ANY religion.

The good thing about her emails are you don't have to do them all, you just start with shining your sink, putting out your clothes the night before, wearing your shoes during the day, and declutter 15 minutes a day.

I find that last one the hardest for me. I'm glad to see this post on here. I'm working on Decluttering 15 minutes a day and exercising 10 minutes a day.....whether or NOT I need it. - 3/30/2010   3:18:07 PM
  • 62
i do honestly believe clutter in the home is a symptom, or maybe vice versa, either way, i feel so much better after a good declutter just as i do after a good workout - 3/30/2010   3:11:41 PM
  • 61
I have Sink Reflections and used to be on her email list but dropped it pretty quickly. First, it was way too many emails, second, it seemed to assume that I was home all day to do housework (I work outside the home). Third, and the main reason, her emails are too filled with her religion. It is great that she lives her beliefs but not everyone follows the same religion so it can be excluding.

Still, her cleaning and organizing tips are great so I use those without her direct supervision. - 3/30/2010   2:00:04 PM

I love, love, love the FLYlady and her precious crew! I've been a FLYbaby for about 4 years. The difference the timer and 15 minutes made in my life were phenomenal! She saved my life with the words, "You're not behind, just jump in where we are!" I will be forever grateful for all she's done for me! - 3/30/2010   12:24:35 PM

I found Flylady around 2000. Her 15 min. principle helped me to exercise a then atrophied arm (due to a rare condition). It took about 4 or 5 years. The 5 year prognosis was that I would have 2 or 3 of my limbs atrophied. I owe her everything! The condition has spread and I keep telling myself, "You can do anything for 15 minutes", and I am out of the wheelchair and haven't needed my cane in 2 years! - 3/30/2010   10:43:03 AM

I get their daily email. The nice thing is that have condensed everything into one email a day so it won't clutter your inbox. I have not turned my whole life over to flying, but have applied a few of her tips for cleaning, like the 15 minute cleaning sessions. It keeps my mind focused and I don't get sidetracked as often. It's great for those who need help in the clutter department.

It's also very liberating to get rid of things that I will probably never use again! - 3/30/2010   10:28:39 AM

I was a member of flylady, but the rules are rigid (who really needs to wear shoes in the house 24/7) and the emails alone (sometimes 20 or more a day) are clutter in and of themselves. Also, the constant emails to buy her overpriced products (I bought one that didn't work) are enough to keep me away. - 3/30/2010   9:02:24 AM

I too have tried flylady. It is the only organizing system that has really made sense for me. My challenge is trying to get her weekly schedule going to fit my weekly schedule.
I too found her e-mails a bit of clutter. I unsubscribed to her e-mails but I follow her on facebook, just as I do sparkpeople, and that has helped me declutter my inbox in my e-mail. - 3/30/2010   8:03:42 AM

I have been a FLY baby for years! I followed quite a few of her suggestions. I don't do everything but the "Control Journal" has really been a life saver! I agree with another person that all the emails became just another "clutter" to deal with so I am no longer a member but I do go to the website on occasion when I feel like i need to stay on track! - 3/30/2010   7:29:58 AM

I was pleased to see DREAMERBLUE's comment, "I was not given a lot of chores growing up and really didn't get a sense of what my mom did to keep the place clean or what her routines were." So many kids have NO CLUE what goes on in the running of a household. Parents - you don't do them any favors by doing it all for them. I will check out FlyLady.net, but I suspect I won't sign on - sounds like a lot of stuff I already know and do. Thanks for posting, though! - 3/30/2010   6:23:13 AM

Along with Pam and Peggy of SHE; Marla has made a difference in so many lives. I've been a "fan" for years and years, and tho I don't always follow her system, she came into my life when I REALLY needed to get "O". Thanks Marla, and thanks SP for sharing this podcast. - 3/30/2010   5:48:18 AM

I have been a flylady member for over 4 years now. It really really made my life easier. I know how to deal with dishes, garbage, cleaning and most important stress, eating and planning diners. The you can do anything for 15 minutes attitude is exactly the 15 minute exercise sparkpeople advises. There are so many things the same in these programs. Just start with the 30 day program on the site and read only the emails intented for your program and you'll do great. Babysteps, for cleaning, exercise and peace of mind! - 3/30/2010   5:30:42 AM

I looooooooove FlyLady! Check the right side of my page for FlyLady FLYing tips. There are also several FlyLady SparkTeams. FlyLady.net is free, she has products for sale but they are EXCELLENT, I am super frugal but I no longer buy from stores if FlyLady carries a version of it. Highly recommend, also see her book, "Body Clutter" by Marla Cilley for weight, and "Sink Reflections for FLYing. You are not alone! Marla is one of us and SHE HAS BEEN THERE. I wish all the people on Hoarders would be introduced to FlyLady. Also recommend her highly upbeat CDs. Like the Tony the Tiger secret adult eaters, I love her children's CDs, for myself! - 3/30/2010   3:19:55 AM

Flylady has been very helpful to me. All of her products are excellent.I believe that behind her reasons to promote her products are just that she finds they simplify the chores that we all have to do.I am more than happy to purchase her products. In the long run, they actually save you time AND money. It is a small price to pay for all of the time and effort she has put into helping people get their homes and busy lives in order. Her methods work for me, and I am grateful to her. Cheers. - 3/30/2010   2:19:32 AM

WOOOOHOOOOO I have been flying for over 5 yrs. I'm not close to perfect on this by no means, but I have learned so much from flylady. It's a wonderful resource to help declutter everything in my life. However I havent been decluttering my health issues lately.

I am so glad to see it here on yet another site that I call my online home. - 3/30/2010   2:13:04 AM

I was a Flybaby for over a year about 4 years ago. I learned a lot from Flylady and her system. I loved her message of simplicity and taking action. Eventually, however, I had to part ways as I found her emails to be subtly negative and condescending. It seemed to me that she kept emphasizing our incompetence and how we needed her and her system to keep organized.

Things may have changed since then. I still carry on the Fly lessons I've learned. But I have no interest in returning. Like DOTCHILATHAM, I've taken what I think are the best parts of her system and personalized them to my life and ignored what I don't agree with. - 3/29/2010   10:32:18 PM

i love flylady & have been reading/subscribing to her for almost 10 years. i figure we're not all the same & we don't need help with the same stuff so i read some, delete some & do a lot. i find her empowering & kind & encouraging. i don't mind the products she sells - some are useful to me, some aren't, and her website & email system is free! if her product sales support that, fine. - 3/29/2010   10:17:36 PM

I was not given a lot of chores growing up and really didn't get a sense of what my mom did to keep the place clean or what her routines were; Flylady helped me with that some. She also taught me tricks to deal with the procrastination that can come from perfectionism (not even wanting to start because I'm secretly afraid of not doing it right). One of these tricks is giving myself permission to set a timer and STOP doing whatever the chore is after 15 minutes...it is much easier to commit to doing SOMETHING rather than nothing if you can promise yourself that you can take a break after a short while, and I am often amazed at how much better a room actually looks after 15 minutes of even just straightening things, gathering up all the items that don't belong there & taking them where they belong, etc. Setting a timer also helps me not forget to "reboot" the laundry, hang up the hang-to-dry stuff, go back to that load of dishes that was "soaking," etc. She also gave me the idea of assigning certain things to certain days so I don't have to think about what I have to do--if it's Monday, it's time to wash the towels, etc. I am on-again, off-again with my routines, but I have still picked up quite a bit I find helpful through Flylady.

I hear what other people are saying in that some of us have maybe moved beyond the point where we find particular e-mails helpful, have seen a change in their focus, etc., but it sounds like many people are still learning a lot from her, and that is fantastic. Fly, little flybabies, fly :)! - 3/29/2010   7:26:28 PM

I was a Flybaby for about 5 years and learned so much! "I can do anything in 15 minutes..." is a mantra I use even in my classroom as encouragement for those who say things are 'too hard!' Since I haven't been a member for a couple of years I didn't know about ads, etc. but her breaking down of chores and the idea of putting things away in proper places (what a novel idea, lol) made a huge difference in my home AND classroom. Check out another of her website affilliates as you start losing weight and want to get advice on looking great: Missussmartypants.com. - 3/29/2010   7:21:14 PM

I have wondered if Flylady and Spark knew about each other. They really go together well. I try to take the best from both sites that are pertinent to me. DOTCHILATHAM, I understand that it seems more commercial now, but anyone can still use the site for free, and get some very sound advice. She is a little sappy, but I can't deny the effect her website has had on me. I will always be grateful to her for putting it all together in a usable format. - 3/29/2010   6:58:14 PM

I've been a FlyLady fan for many years. Sheesh, it was either 2000 or early 2001 when I first started "Flying" and I still (almost always) do the emailed daily routines. I also use the timer a lot...it's amazing what can be accomoplished in 15 minutes. It still blows my mind what a difference setting the timer makes! And at this moment, I'm using a stainless steel waterbottle that I ordered from her website -highly recommend :-)
