See More: motivation, celebrity,
Anyone who knows me will tell you I am a sentimental ol’ fool. I love it when others overcome adversities in their lives— when they rise above all obstacles regardless of how long it takes to reach a dream.

If you haven’t come across such a story, let me share with you one of the most inspiring and uplifting stories I have seen in a very long time. As a contestant on Britain’s Got Talent, Susan Boyle, age 47, took the leap to fulfill a life-long dream to become a professional singer. An average, unassuming woman, who has never been married, never been kissed, made her way on stage in front of a live audience and three celebrity judges, including American Idol’s own Simon Cowell.

Click here to see her incredible performance.

As the camera panned the audience you could see people rolling their eyes in disbelief and giggling. Even the celebrity judges were snickering as Ms Boyle proclaimed her goal of following in the steps of the great singer Elaine Paige. When asked what song she would be singing she proudly and confidently announced she would be performing one of my all-time favorite songs from Les Miserables I Dreamed a Dream.

From the moment she sang the first note she was living her dream--her dream to sing. She sang with the voice of an angel, never once wavering in her belief that this was her time--her time to fulfill her dream. Her grace, dignity, and beautiful glow brought tears to my eyes. The lyrics were so inspiring and yet she held her composure as the audience was brought to their feet throughout her performance. Even the judges appeared awestruck by this ordinary woman singing each lyric with such confidence and conviction. And of course the crème de la crème was seeing her exhilarating response when she was told that she was coming back. Wow, I felt I was right there with her, cheering her on.

Her story teaches all of us that we cannot and should not allow other people’s perception of us to stand in our way of reaching our dreams. Taking risks is what living is all about. It is about not allowing anyone to hold us back, including ourselves. It is about learning not to judge others from outward appearances. It is about being who we are meant to be. It is about sharing our talents and gifts with others. It is about living our dream.

I hope this story will inspire all of us to live our dream. We only have one shot at life and we should not allow others to control our destiny. No matter where we are in this journey called life, each and every one of us has something to offer the world.

Are you living your dream and if not does Ms Boyle's story inspire you to take the risk to do just that—live the dream?

I play her CD often when I just want to sit and listen. I watched the show, i watched the expressions change in disbeleif that the sounds coming from her mouth were so pure and beautiful. She is most certainly admirable. - 6/21/2010   10:54:11 PM

Susan Boyle is a stunning example of how we never know what courage and beauty can lie beneath what society might judge as a joke at a glance. Susan didn't let the audience's laughter prevent her from doing what she knew she could. She reminds me that I shouldn't let my own inner critic prevent me from being who I want to be. - 1/22/2010   6:30:32 PM

    Well done Susan.

I watched her preformance on YouTube.com and was in total amazement. The looks on everyone's face when she mentioned she wanted to be just as famous as Elaine Page. But when she started to sing well then it changed their tune..real quick.

It just goes to show and it has been mentioned here time and time again..."Don't judge a book by it's cover." She's a true inspiration! - 10/8/2009   11:47:06 AM

When I first saw the Susan Boyle video. I thought what an amazing woman. To get up there at 47 years old, and sing like that. Then I watched an interview that Merdith Vera did with her about three weeks ago, and now I have even more faith in this woman. She was the youngest child born to her parents. When she came into the world, she was without oxygen. This left her a little developmentally disabled. This is the interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pm-Q

Susan Boyle superbly amazed everyone when that first beautiful note came from her mouth. I loved watching the judges jaws drop in awe and hope the people in the audience felt foolish for thinking she couldn`t or wouldn`t dream her dream. It`s kind of a shame she waited this long because of her emotional health.
BUT I LOVED LISTENING TO HER AGAIN AND AGAIN.

KUDOS to Susan Boyle for dreaming her dream. - 7/2/2009   2:42:58 PM

totally amazing. I've heard bits and pieces of her performance on the news but nothing hits you like the complete song. so many people were shaking their heads and snickering and when she started singing you could have heard a pin drop before the audience erupted! Great article too, by the way. thanks for posting it. - 7/1/2009   11:45:51 PM

She is one of the coolest women I have ever seen. How owned everyone must have felt in there after her first tune.
I cannot really say if I would have been different to the others since I expected a bit of something like this after reading the beginning of the blog. But really, she is amazing. - 6/30/2009   4:32:58 PM

Every time I hear her singing I have tears in my eyes. Just love it and at least thee judges auknowkledged that they had juged by appearance and it was a wake up call for everyone to realize that looks are superficial and the talent will shine through. I am happy Susan is living her dream and I hope she can cope with the pressures of fame.
Good luck to her an I am more inclined now to follow my dreams.

Susan Boyle obviously has talent. But the inspiration for me comes in the form of hard work, discipline, and being battle-ready when the possibility arises to do the thing that you've worked your whole life for. She clearly is unable to function in the professional atmosphere of the entertainment industry, in which all persons are as super-competent as she is talented, able to do their job regardless of external circumstances. Susan sang three times in two months and had to be hospitalized. Stay home, girl, you don't have what it takes for this occupation. - 6/20/2009   8:51:51 AM

It's sad that the British (mostly) media treated Susan so harshly. She was subjected to them constantly between the time she first appeared until the day she appeared in the finale. How does one handle going from being just and "average everyday" person to being a star? I doubt she had any idea of what was going to happen to her when she decided to audition.

Now that all the hoopla has died down, I do hope that she is able to work successfully with the music she quite obviously loves. To be able to bounce back from, as the media tells us, nearly having a nervous breakdown to actually having the career she dreamed of will show the world how special Susan really is. - 6/19/2009   8:53:24 PM

I wept when I saw her sing for the first time, and it made me feel so...blessed, just to see someone like her. For all of her life people ignored her, that was apparent, they rolled their eyes and didn't see that she had a gift she had worked on her entire life. Really I will always remember Ms. Boyle, she is quite a character...something pure in that sweet voice maybe? The fact that she took others rolling eyes and snickers and showed that she was worth a thousand of them. Maybe more. - 6/16/2009   3:40:46 PM

Quoting Kels.grl -"I LOVED seeing this! My favorite part of the whole perfomance was actually seeing how people had judged her before and after her performance. It is such an inspiring lesson to us all that looks say nothing about a person, and it really IS the inside that counts!" I agree 100%, it is amazing to me how far or shall I say "how transgressed" our society has come in judging one by looks or other standards. It is really all about confidence, and believing in oneself that really shines through! Good for her, the hairs on my neck stood up when I heard her sing, and it was a truly beautiful song! - 5/27/2009   6:58:49 PM

I watched this here in the UK and can honestly say that it made the hair on my arms stand on end and gave me goosebumps. Unfortunately, the "powers that be" at Britain's Got Talent are now telling her that if she wants to stay in the competition she has to keep a low profile and stop doing all the publicity that she is doing, especially in the US. - 4/27/2009   8:17:23 AM

Susan Boyle has proven once again that one person can make a difference. She represents many of us who have been greeted by a world of skeptics. With this reinforcement, we have no excuse no to pursue our goals/dreams.

Even though it seems you are a world away, I thank you Susan Boyle for being a blessing to me. - 4/26/2009   1:46:50 PM

I loved her story too. I was SO moved listening to her!

I feel like so much of this last year I have been living dreams! I started Karate which has always been something I have wanted to do, I have lost 28 pounds which is just amazing to me, and I was able to sing 'The Star Spangled Banner' with my sister at an international Karate Tournament - another dream of mine. It has been exciting! - 4/24/2009   9:27:31 PM
