I had to do a double take the first time I passed this restaurant. Born out of a desire to preserve "the culture of those old gas stations and high-powered muscle cars," The Lube isn't your ordinary wings joint. If you are looking for a new place for a night out with the guys or a family-friendly restaurant that focuses on dad, The Quaker Steak and Lube might be worth checking out. Not only have they won "Best Wings USA" they have over 100 local, national and international awards for their sauce recipes as well as a focus on healthy kids options. Oh yea, there are plenty of cars, trucks and motorcycles too!

Of course, there are plenty of high fat and high calorie options to tempt you. Yes, many are extremely higher in sodium and only slightly better when you request no added salt when ordering. However, you can also find some health conscious options as well. Although the restaurant doesn't make their nutrition information readily available, the team at Healthy Dining Finder has. Here are some of the healthier options and special request suggestions they highlight.

If you don't live in the mid-western part of the U. S., you may not have seen a Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant. However, there are currently more than 45 locations in multiple states with Ohio having the honor of the most locations. If you are curious about their famous sauces, there is an online store where you can check them out for yourself.

What do you think is most intriguing about this restaurant? If you were going to develop a unique restaurant, what would you use as your inspiration?

There is pone in Madison,Wi and that is where my GS wants to go for his birthday, he loves it so when we visit the area we always head there, glad to know what the healthiest options are. - 2/7/2012   4:43:01 PM

I am hesitant about the high sodium considering I struggle to stay within my range for daily sodium. With that being said, I will try this because it is interesting. - 2/6/2012   9:37:50 PM

Love the name. Not so crazy about the high sodium - 2/6/2012   9:21:49 PM

UH -- SALADS with 800+ mg of sodium??!! That's just a sign that it's NOT a good place to eat if you have to watch your sodium!! I can eat ALOT of things that are WAY lower in sodium!! They must SOAK their chicken in salt!!

And "N/A" for the sodium content of their sauces equals TOO HIGH to want to TELL you just how much sodium is in it, in MY book!

We have one of these restaurants not far from us -- and it IS unique - but obviously not a "healthy option" for anyone with BP issues or if you're just trying to limit your sodium intake to 1500 mg/day!!

Thanks for the info -- but more because I KNOW to stay AWAY now!! LOL.... - 2/6/2012   7:19:54 PM

Love their chipolte rub on the wings. I don't go there to eat healthy, I go there to eat like a cave-woman! Finger licking good!! - 2/6/2012   3:16:00 PM

My kids used to love the onion rings served on an extendable car antennae! The one we used to go to in Robinson, PA had a nice hot lunch bar as an alternative to wings. The salads are very good though. We miss it! - 2/6/2012   2:13:48 PM

I love the Lube! We live close to the original in Sharon, PA, which was built in a converted service station (hence the name). They have great wing sauces, and many choices (my new favorite is the Tequila Lime Barbeque). I try to save up my calories for "real" wings, rather than the boneless, and get a garage salad to go with them. - 2/6/2012   2:07:01 PM

wings and diet? no way. I'll skip the commercial - 2/6/2012   12:32:24 PM

You lost me when the first three healthy choices listed were salad without dressing. I don't think you need to be Julia Child and Richard Simmons rolled into one body to come up with a healthy choice more interesting than salad with no dressing. - 2/6/2012   12:11:05 PM

I think if I wanted to open a "unique" restaurant I'd probably try to think of something slightly more unusual than, er, wings with dips.

    Just saying :-) - 2/6/2012   11:55:14 AM

My husband grew up just 5 minutes from the original Quaker Steak and Lube and Three by the River, and I grew up about 20 minutes away. Boy, were we surpised to see them popping up everywhere when we moved out of the area! We used to go there all the time when we lived up there, but haven't been to any of the new chain locations - it just doesn't seem the same. I was sure suprised to see them mentioned on a diet-friendly blog! - 2/6/2012   11:53:40 AM

heh heh heh - my ex-husband used to ask for dressing on the side, then dump the whole thing on his salad, and think he was being healthy. Usually the 'dressing on the side' was a bigger portion than if the kitchen had put it on the salad for him. - 2/6/2012   11:51:47 AM

We had one of these open nearby and what surprised me the most was that with a name like this they don't do oil changes while you eat! They would get me every three months if I could have a salad in a friendly restaurant instead of twiddling my thumbs in a mechanic's waiting room. - 2/6/2012   11:27:33 AM

I'm surprised Ohio has the most locations! I went to college near the original 2 locations in PA, and Lube wings were a tradition for us. - 2/6/2012   10:50:34 AM

The Biker Chick Salad is the best! Don't need much of the dressing. I do the "dip/stab" method and there is tons of dressing left over. YUMMY - 2/6/2012   10:50:20 AM

I love Quaker Steak. I recently tried their boneless wings with fresh steamed broccoli and pita bread and it was delicious. I used to be that I would get the Wings and O Rings, but I found that I was very satisfied with my healthier option and I still got to have a fun night out with friends. - 2/6/2012   10:27:37 AM

    Great food, but I'm not real sure that it's diet-friendly! - 2/6/2012   10:07:48 AM
