Take a little off the top! Easy to master and maintain, short hairstyles are cool, sexy, and -- best of all -- time-saving. With tons of stylish 'dos out there, it's easy to remain on the cutting edge.

Pixie Crop

This sexy, gamine short hairstyle plays up eyes, cheekbones, and other strong features (celebrities like Keira Knightley, Natalie Portman, and Katie Holmes have all sported versions of it). Smooth the long fringe bangs flat to change up the look, or wear it completely un-styled -- simply tousle with an anti-frizz product, and go.

Stylishly Shaggy

Think of this as a modern mop top -- or just a super-short version of that shag 'do popularized by the Beatles. Work with your hair's natural texture and all-over layers to create this ready-to-ruffle haircut.

Mini-Afro

Go all-natural with a short afro hairstyle -- no chemicals needed to create this look! Short layers all over the head create the shape, and minimal combing with fingers or a pick -- plus a dab of a shine-enhancing hair product -- is all the maintenance it needs.

My hair is down to my waist and it gets as wet as a mop every time I work out. I am going to get it cut very short in June (first time in my entire life) but I hope I get a skilled stylist because my hair has thinned a lot and I would not want scalp to show all over the place. - 4/27/2012   6:51:31 AM

I cut my hair recently and I love it!!!! I always like a change. Either cut or color or both. It's just hair. It will grow back. - 7/25/2011   1:45:35 PM

I simply can't pull off short hair. I think the pixie cuts are super-cute, but I have thick, curly hair. It never looks good short. My hair is about to the middle of my back now. It's a pain in the butt in the summer, especially while working out, but it does look good when it's tamed. - 7/21/2011   8:25:46 AM

I could never cut my hair that short. I would cry if I cut it just below the shoulders! I'm way too attached to my long hair. - 7/21/2011   6:40:35 AM

I love having short hair, and will return after I've reached my needed 10 inches so I can donate my naturally red hair. - 6/14/2011   8:08:36 AM

I feel so much more feminine with long hair but even I think it is time to get this
mane cut off. I will hate it when I do it. And I do think this topic relates to health - both mental and physical. How wwe preceive ourselves is very important. I am sorry that no gentlemen ventured out to expound on their hair preferences for themselves. I know they care. - 6/13/2011   11:13:17 PM

I go short in the summer and all year round! It's fun and totally part of my personality! My husband would prefer it long but he gets it! I love it! - 6/13/2011   3:49:14 PM

I always loved different styles and to be ahead of everyone else. Then I had dfferent bobs. I know, I know, how many ways are there differences in bobs.
I started about shoulder, then a little shorted, and then ear length as I was going to have surgery and wanted something easy to care for. Then my treatments left me bald. My eyebrows and hair are growing back when I'm hit with another round of treatments. It will probably be until the holidays that I will have enough to style. This has taught me, it's OK to wear a wig and have different color hair all the time and long or short, as long as the style fits the shape of your face, you are ok at any length. As long as you are pleased. - 6/12/2011   11:57:29 AM

Short hair for me doesn't work...despite what everyone may say...and hairdressers are sissors-happy and just want to have a field day in my head by cutting off my hair.
Long hair in the summer works for me because when I am exercising or going shopping, etc. I can put up my hair in a pony tail or pin it up and all the hair is off my neck. When I have functions to attend, I have hair I can put in a french roll. So long hair throughout the year works for me.

I learnt a long time ago...do what pleases you and don't to it to please others...because you'll never be happy. - 6/12/2011   10:51:09 AM

I am going the other way. I am growing mine out. It is easier care when it is long and I am considering going back to work. I love it long in the summer as a quick up ponytail and instant cool! Shorter hair makes me look younger to others but makes me look like my mom to me! - 6/11/2011   10:40:24 PM

I love short hair...I look younger, it takes much less work and my husband loves shorter hair (in fact, he hates that long stringy hair which looks unwashed that so many "actresses & newsanchors" wear). - 6/11/2011   4:11:14 PM

I grew up with short pixie cuts until I was 12 and then let it grow out long. I've finally settled for shoulder length and am happy with it, although it does take extra time. Short might happen when I get to be an old lady lol ;) - 6/10/2011   6:34:22 PM

I love SparkPeople, but this seems to veer off the health-related field and more into the pleasing our sponsors field, IMHO. - 6/10/2011   6:08:59 PM

I object to the first characterization of a short cut as "sexy". How about "chic" or "professional"? I'd even settle for "attractive". It's time we were viewed as women of substance, of strength, of consequence and marketing/advertising needs to change their tune to reflect who we really are - people not objects. - 6/10/2011   3:10:51 PM

My husband actually likes shorter hair on me. I've had either long hair or bobs throughout most of my life. The bobs seem to look best with my face, although I get bored with them and decide to grow my hair out. Then I get bored with it longer. LOL. - 6/10/2011   1:41:29 PM

I love this, I like to look at hair cuts and different styles. I've had my hair cut into various bobs, over the last three years, but now it is at my shoulders, and honestly I like it better. I definitely don't want a hair cut, that I have to work at everyday. I'm more the wash and go type. I find I'm always working at it, when it is short. - 6/10/2011   1:16:09 PM

Until a few months ago, I'd had long hair for about 8 years; kept it long for my hubby. But all through high school and college I'd had short hair, and I missed it! So finally I started cutting it shorter and shorter, until it's the length I love! My hubby was a little disappointed at first, but now he says it looks cute! I love it b/c it doesn't get in my way when I work out, drive in the car, or anything else. Easy-peasy! - 6/10/2011   1:06:59 PM

I've had short hair almost as long as I've had my husband, over 20 years. When he said he'd like it longer, I told him if he would get up every morning and fix it I would gladly let it grow. As I said, I've had short hair almost as long as I've had my husband. - 6/10/2011   10:48:45 AM

How interesting. I was just thinking yesterday about getting a short 'do' for the summer, but can't afford a trip to the hairdresser's just now, so will have to live with my pony tail for the really hot days - like yesterday!

Cute hair styles though! - 6/10/2011   9:27:04 AM

I'm actually trying to grow my hair out. Also I do love the mop top red head one but I know it wouldn't look that cute in one month. Guess I'm saving money and trying to cover that balding spot sigh...... - 6/10/2011   8:48:11 AM

My hair is always VERY short. I can't go any shorter for summer or I would have to shave my head! - 6/10/2011   8:41:29 AM

I just got my hair cut really really really short and I love it! I have recently knocked off a little over 10 pounds + short hair = all my friends say I look 10 years younger! Can't beat all the compliments I am getting which has more than doubled since I got my hair cut! It took my husband a couple of hours of straight out staring at me and now he says he loves my hair and says I look great! Of course, I am accessorizing with dangling earrings and more make-up! I feel good inside out!

I like me hair both long and short. It's shoulder length now, so it will be up in a clip for most of the summer (at least on days that the temp is 99 and 100). - 6/10/2011   7:57:59 AM

I've always had long hair. It takes time, time, time, to manage it so I finally cut it short. Love it and it's so easy to care for. Just wash and toss. Good for convertibles too! - 6/10/2011   7:24:04 AM

I definitely prefer short hair- at least on me. I am a wash & go person just like lizzy63. My hubby would prefer me to have long hair, but I tell him since it's my hair and I'm the one who has to take care of it I get to choose how I wear it. As a kid I always had to have long hair worn in braids. When I was in 7th grade I finally was allowed to get it cut, but I had to have a perm, which I hated, so I let it grow out again. Since I have been an adult I have kept my hair short. - 6/10/2011   5:40:09 AM

I've nearly always worn my hair long, and when I do get it cut, I want to immediately grow it out again. It takes a long time for me to go from short back to long, so no, I just don't 'go there' any more!
    Really cute styles features though!

I have short hair, try to keep it tapered in the back. With wavy hair it works so much better esp in summer. - 6/9/2011   8:49:44 PM

I find long so much easier - no weekly haircuts, no daily washing, have your own portable fan in the summer (pony tail) and blanket in the winter . . . long is better for me! - 6/9/2011   8:37:03 PM

I have luxurious thick curly brown hair that was subjected to pixie cuts when growing up. In the fourth grade I looked like a little boy. So, now that I am a big girl and can pick my own style I go long. I throw it up in a ponytail most of the time anyway, but I love to fix it up the way I want to more than anything. I actually find it easier and cooler too. - 6/9/2011   8:35:19 PM

I'm always surprised how many women say that their partners wouldn't like them in short hair. My husband MUCH prefers me with shorter hair, and he's known me since I had hair to the middle of my back.

I can no longer stand hair on my neck (especially now that it's in the 90's here), and get a headache when I use anything to pull my hair back (sensitive scalp).

I'm actually kind of tired of the everywoman long beachy hair look---it ruins the lines of a lot of fashions, and often doesn't play up any of their good features. - 6/9/2011   6:53:36 PM

I can relate to those who commented that they were subjected to pixie cuts. My mom did the same thing. I hated it. I did have a Dorothy Hamill and Toni Tenille cut as a kid. I liked those. Isn't it amazing how attached some of us are to our hair?? LOL - 6/9/2011   3:10:31 PM

I haven't cut my hair short (chin-length or shorter) since the summer of '93. I prefer shoulder-length or longer hair on me. - 6/9/2011   3:04:22 PM

I go short all the time! So much easier! Although, there are times when I wish it were long again, but the feeling usually goes away after I remember how long it takes to curl it... - 6/9/2011   2:54:38 PM

I usually cut my hair about once a year and donate it. I just got it cut into a very short shaggy pixie and I LOVE it! I may just keep it this way for good. - 6/9/2011   2:20:30 PM

I only get my hair cut once every 3 years. I got it cut off in January, which is nice because it's just now long enough to put in a ponytail but still on the short side. - 6/9/2011   1:16:23 PM

Went short as spring arrived. Cut off 10 inches! Now I'm do for a trim again. In fact, I'm going to get my hair done Friday! Great timing on the blog! - 6/9/2011   12:38:28 PM

My mom always gave me the short, Shirley Temple perm when I was a kid. When I finally allowed to grow my hair out, it's been past my shoulders since then. But..this year, I decided to chop it off again. Now it's a cute bob at about a little bit past my chin. Everyone loves the cut on me and I love it. I love the pixie crop but I'm still too scared to go that short. - 6/9/2011   12:37:33 PM

ZORBS13, I feel your pain! I grew up in the 1970s, & all the girls had long , flowing straight hair~ except me in my dutchboy.
I hated it! Now my hair is looonnnggg, & will stay that way. - 6/9/2011   12:30:11 PM

I had a bowl cut for the first 12 years of my life, and anything shorter than chin length gives me violent flashbacks to that unfortunate time. - 6/9/2011   11:57:21 AM

Love my short haircut year around but especially in the summer. I know there is more versatility with long hair, ponytail, bun, long with waves or straight but been there and done that. - 6/9/2011   11:55:15 AM

    Short everyday for me!
